00:12Hi friends! Today we're gonna learn how to crochet the cute little mazy bow. The mazy bow is a sweet
00:19classic sailor bow and as you can see it has some different parts to it including the bow itself,
00:26the little ribbon that goes underneath, and a little center strip here. You can easily attach
00:34it to any hair clip, hair tie, to make it a cute little hair accessory or you can use it
00:41as an
00:42embellishment on your other projects. Let's go over the materials. I'm using some seashell yarn from
00:52Hobby. This is a weight number two yarn and with that I'm using a four millimeter crochet hook,
01:00pair of scissors, and a yarn needle for sewing at the end. You can use any type of yarn or
01:07hook you'd
01:08like that's suitable for the yarn weight. If you use a thinner yarn and a smaller hook you will end
01:13up
01:13with a smaller bow, but if you use a thicker yarn and a larger hook you'll end up with a
01:19larger bow.
01:21All right, let's get started.
01:28Hi friends! So just a quick disclaimer, I had made the full video tutorial for this mazy bow using the
01:35seashell yarn and a four millimeter hook and guess what? The file got corrupted. So I'm redoing it again,
01:43and I just wanted to kind of show you how it works up with the same weight yarn. This is
01:50also a sport
01:51weight two yarn, but using a different size hook. I'm using a 3.5 millimeter now, which is slightly
01:59smaller. So I'm gonna go ahead and demonstrate how using a smaller hook will result in a smaller bow in
02:09general. So you're going to start with a slipknot. After your slipknot, you're going to chain three,
02:26one, two, and three chains, and the starting chain is going to count as your first stitch. For the
02:34foundation, you're going to yarn over, insert your hook into that third chain from your hook, like so.
02:44Yarn over, pull through a loop. You're going to have three loops on your hook. Now you're going to make
02:50the foundation. So yarn over, pull through just the first loop, and that is our foundation right there.
02:59Now we're going to finish off the half double crochet by yarning over, going through all three
03:05loops. That's your first foundation half double crochet stitch. Let's make our second one here.
03:15Yarn over, insert your hook into the foundation that you just made.
03:22Yarn over, pull through a loop. You now have three loops on your hook. Yarn over, go through just the
03:30first loop. We created that foundation. And now we're going to finish our half double crochet.
03:39And you're going to keep repeating this until you've made 23 foundation half double crochets.
03:48Your end of stitch count is going to be 24 because your first three chains count as a stitch.
03:59So remember, again, you're going to make that foundation and finish off your half double crochet.
04:12We are going to meet back when we finish making all of those foundation half double crochets.
04:24Here's a look at round one with the foundation half double crochets done. There are 23 of these and
04:33including the chain three in the beginning that would make 24 stitches. Now to finish up round one,
04:41you're just going to join with a slip stitch to the very top of the chain three. So I'm going
04:48to go into
04:48that chain here and make a slip stitch.
05:06Now, after you slip stitch, you've finished round one and we're ready to move on to round two.
05:12For round two, you are going to start with two chains. That's going to count as the very first stitch.
05:22And you're going to work in back loops only for this entire round. You're going to half double crochet
05:29around in those back loops and finish with a join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain.
05:35Let me go ahead and demonstrate that. So I'm going to go into the first back loop and half double
05:44crochet.
05:46Go into the second back loop and half double crochet. Go into that third back loop
05:58and half double crochet for the back loop.
06:06And you're going to do this all the way around until you reach the end of the round.
06:19Let's meet back at the end of round two where you are going to be joining with a slip stitch.
06:30Now that I've crocheted all the way around for round two, we're going to join with a slip stitch to
06:36the top of the top of the chain two. And this is the starting chain that you made.
06:43So pulling the yarn through for a slip stitch.
06:52And we're going to work around for rounds three, four, and five the exact same way we did for round
06:59two.
07:01So basically just half double crochet around in each stitch, starting with that chain two and ending
07:09with that slip stitch to the top of the chain two. Let's go ahead and meet back when we finish
07:16round five.
07:20After you finish round five, your piece should look something like this.
07:24It'll be sort of like a tube shape and it will turn into a bow very soon. So now what
07:31you'll have to do
07:32is just fasten off with a long yarn tail and make sure it's long enough so that you can wrap
07:38it around
07:39the bow's center several or a good few times later on. So that's enough. After you finish the bow section,
07:50you can set it to the side. We're going to now make the ribbon portion of the pattern.
07:59We're now going to move on to the ribbon section. For the ribbon, we're going to start off with round
08:04one where we chain three. Here's my slip knot to start my chain. And that's one, two, three chains.
08:16This is going to count as your first stitch. And now we're going to do a foundation half double crochet
08:22of 19 stitches for a total of 20. So again, like you did for the bow, we're going to yarn
08:30over,
08:30insert your hook into that first chain you made, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, make that foundation
08:39in the first loop, and then finish off with your half double crochet. Oops, sorry, my yarn split there.
08:49So let me pull that through again. All right, so that's the first foundation half double crochet.
08:55Now I'm going to keep going to make my second. Oops.
09:03Oops. Sorry about it being so fiddly here. I'm trying to look past my phone. My phone's doing the
09:13recording. But I'm trying to look past my phone at what I'm doing with the yarn and hook here. Okay.
09:22So we're going to just keep crocheting until you have a total of 19 foundation half double crochets,
09:30including the chain, the starting chain, that's going to be 20 stitches.
09:38So we'll meet back at the end of round one, row one here. Here is row one of the ribbon
09:45complete.
09:45Let's move on to row two. For row two, we're going to work in back loops only for this entire
09:51row.
09:51And we're going to be chaining and turning. First, you're going to chain three,
09:57and this counts as your first stitch. Turn, and then we're going to work in the same stitch where
10:05you chained out of. And we're going to insert two half double crochets in that same stitch.
10:11So going into that first stitch here, I'm going to half double crochet one and half double crochet two,
10:21both in that same stitch. Oops, you know what, I'm so sorry. I did that wrong because I was supposed
10:30to
10:30work in the back loops. So I apologize for that. Let's see how it's done here. Go into that back
10:39loop of
10:39the first stitch and half double crochet twice.
10:48And now we're going to half double crochet all the way across. Remember to work only one. I mean,
10:57remember to work in the back loops only.
11:01And what you're going to do when you reach the very end is you're going to insert three half double
11:08crochets in that same stitch. And I'll show you what it looks like when we get there.
11:18Here, I've crocheted all the way to the end except in the final stitch for row two. For row two,
11:26um, remember to finish off by inserting three half double crochets all in that very last stitch.
11:33So I'm going to do that now. One, two, and three half double crochets. After you've done that,
11:44you're going to chain three, turn your piece, and for row three, we're going to be working back along
11:54um, across the ribbon. For row three, this time we're going to work in front loops only for this
12:02entire row. Now we're going to start by inserting two half double crochets in the same stitch.
12:10So out of this first chain area we came out of, I'm going to go into just that front loop
12:17here.
12:19And that's one and two half double crochets.
12:25And then as you work all the way across, remember to work only in the front loops only
12:31and put one half double crochet in each stitch. Except when you reach the very last stitch,
12:38we're going to put three half double crochets. So let's go ahead and work along. I'm going to show
12:45you how the first few stitches look. Going into that front loop only, make a half double crochet.
12:53Go into the front loop only, make a half double crochet. When you work in the front loops only,
13:00it pushes the back loops out in the back. So you'll see here that I've got this ridge coming out
13:10now.
13:11And the way it's designed is so that the ribbon part has some texture
13:18as well, which will help it match the bow.
13:27Let's go ahead and meet backward when we're at the very last stitch of row three.
13:35Here we're at that last stitch. And just going into it, you're going to insert three half double crochets
13:44in that same stitch. So that's one, two, and three.
13:52And the way we're going to finish is by making one chain.
13:56It'll kind of secure the end of this ribbon here. And you can fasten off with a tail that you
14:04are
14:04going to weave in later. When you pull on that chain, it's going to kind of, um, close up that,
14:11or cinch up that, uh, end. And here is the other side. You can straighten out your bow a little
14:20bit,
14:21have, um, make sure the ends, it's going to have sort of this long trapezoid shape.
14:27Make sure the ends look neat and pretty.
14:32All right, and that's that for the ribbon portion.
14:39For the center strip, it's just one row super quick and easy. You're going to do a foundation
14:46half double crochet here, like the way we started for the bow and the ribbon section. Do chain three
14:54to begin and then make five more foundation half double crochets. So here's one,
15:05two,
15:16three,
15:20four,
15:26and five.
15:29And these five half double crochets or foundation half double crochets,
15:34is all you need to wrap that center strip around your bow at the end. You're going to want to
15:40fasten off
15:40with, um, somewhat long tail. This long tail will be used to sew the center strip around the bow.
15:50And that's that.
15:56After you've followed all the crochet instructions, you will have three pieces ready.
16:01The bow,
16:02the ribbon,
16:04and the center strip.
16:07Let's go ahead and start with assembly so I can show you how it all comes together.
16:12You're going to first take the bow piece and see where the seam is where you did your
16:19slip stitches and the start of your round.
16:23And you are going to place that seam area in the center.
16:30So instead of having that on the side, I'm shifting it over to the middle.
16:35And the reason why we want to do that is so that we can take that long yarn tail
16:40and wrap it around the center.
16:44And I find it easiest to work with when I have, um, a yarn needle attached.
16:50Because we're going to kind of sew it in place in a little bit anyway.
16:57So here I'm going to take that center and I'm going to bind it, wrap it around my bows,
17:05um, the middle of the bow.
17:10Just several times like so.
17:21Then you can go ahead and make a stitch if you want to kind of secure that.
17:25Or if you have it bound tight enough, you can set it to the side.
17:29And we're going to grab the ribbon part.
17:33For the ribbon part, um, there is a front right side and a wrong side.
17:39I like to have the right side as the one where you see the little ridges of the, um, back
17:46loops
17:46sticking, or sorry, the front loops sticking out.
17:50When you're crocheting in the back loops only, the front loop will be pushed forward.
17:57So I like this to be the front of my bow or the front of my ribbon.
18:03In the other side, as you can see here,
18:07the stitches are going into the back loops so they don't have that extra loop showing.
18:14So with the extra loop showing, it gives some nice texture.
18:17I like to have that.
18:20Where, um, you're going to find the center of your ribbon.
18:23So if you fold it in half, that will tell you where the very middle is.
18:30And what I want to do, the way you're looking at the bow, that is actually going to be the
18:35back side.
18:36So I'm going to put on that back side to my ribbon, uh, to my bow here.
18:45This is the wrong side.
18:47And here's my right side.
18:49This will be the front of my ribbon.
18:51And I'm going to take that yarn tail from my bow and wrap it several more times around the ribbon
19:01portion.
19:03When I do it tightly, it will keep both pieces together for the time being.
19:12There we go.
19:17And if I turn it around to see the front of my bow, it will have the ribbon behind the
19:25bow coming out from the back, which is quite a nice look.
19:34And to secure your ribbon, you're going to want to make a few stitches here.
19:39So I'm just going to insert my yarn needle into, um, the center.
19:49Like so.
19:51And I'm going to insert, um, it through again, just to hold my stitches in place.
20:16After you have sewn the ribbon to the bow, you can go ahead and grab the center strip.
20:25This tiny little center strip here.
20:28And I'm going to go ahead and attach my yarn needle to that long yarn tail on the center strip.
20:38And this strip will basically be wrapped around the bow and the ribbon together like so.
20:46And you'll want to sew the two tails together in the back.
20:53And I'm going to make it easier for myself by tying them together first.
21:06I'm going to tie them together nice and tight.
21:20And here's the front of my bow.
21:23You'll want all the tail ends and the stitching to happen in the back where you won't see it.
21:34And here, I'm going to just sew them, the pieces together.
21:51And if you do that a few times and fasten off, um, you can then tie those ends together.
21:59Weave them in and also weave in the extra ends from the ribbon as well.
22:06When you turn your piece over, when it's all done, you'll have a beautiful little bow already.
22:14I found a super cute little hair clip that I'm going to use to attach to the back of my
22:20bow.
22:21You can use, um, any kind of hair clip you want, like those little alligator clips,
22:26something like this, or, um, hair ties would be great as well.
22:32You could just, uh, sew it to the back of your bow where you have all those, um, yarn ends
22:40and seams.
22:53After you weave in all your ends, your cute little hair bow is all done and ready to be worn
22:59or used.
23:01I hope you enjoyed this cute little crochet project.
