00:00Sometimes I like to be an asshole like that and be like, how many people are going to ask to
00:03touch my hair today?
00:05And I'll like keep Italians.
00:07Hi guys, welcome. I'm Ryan.
00:09I'm Wendley.
00:10And I'm Lauren.
00:11And today we're talking about hair, a way that you've never heard it talked about before.
00:16When you have curly, kinky hair, sometimes it takes a little bit to get ready in the morning.
00:22And it's not so easy to just wash and go.
00:25Do you guys feel pressure to like wear your hair relaxed or wear it natural?
00:30My situation is a little bit unique in that I'm adopted into a white family.
00:36And so my mother didn't really know how to do my hair.
00:38And so, you know, she took me to a salon and they were the ones who suggested that I relax
00:45my hair to make it more manageable.
00:47Neither of us knew any better.
00:49And so I ended up with a perm in my hair.
00:50And then a few years later, it all fell off because it was burnt off.
00:54Now that I'm older and I know how to take care of my hair and do my hair, I'm much
00:58more comfortable.
00:59And I love wearing my hair, you know, huge and curly.
01:03But again, there are times when I do just, I feel prettier, which is sad.
01:09With straight hair, there's just something about it that makes me feel like a different person almost.
01:14Yeah, I totally get that, especially the part about like being younger and everyone that you're around, like kind of
01:21being curious about your hair.
01:23And especially like in middle school and like high school when people were starting to like pinpoint things that made
01:28other people different.
01:29Right.
01:30It's very easy to feel like, oh my God, I have to look like these other kids.
01:33Making your hair kind of look like everyone else's was the easiest way to deflect any of the other, like
01:42critiques.
01:43As you get older, you kind of accept the hair you're given.
01:47Maybe we need to like reprogram our thinking, you know what I mean?
01:51And when we like raise children, like let them know that their curls are beautiful.
01:56Because right now, when I look at my hair curled and I look at it straight, I actually prefer the
02:01curly stage.
02:02I have cousins, they just have so much pride in their afros and their curly hair.
02:09And like sometimes I'm like, dang, I wish that was me, you know?
02:12They were growing up rather in a much different time than we grew up.
02:16I mean, the natural hair movement now is so, you know, for us, so front and center.
02:22And we see people that are rocking their natural hair and owning it at such a young age when it
02:27was so difficult for us.
02:28Some people will say like, it's just hair, what are you talking about?
02:31Like, it goes so much deeper.
02:33Would you say that you wear your hair differently depending on like who you're around?
02:37When I was first entering the workforce, I had this idea that, okay, like if I presented
02:46what I thought like a clean, polished, professional woman should look like, translates to, oh, I
02:52can't wear my hair the way that it naturally is.
02:55Right.
02:55I don't think that that is the case here, luckily, and I think a lot of other companies are changing.
02:59Sometimes I actually feel more inclined to wear my hair out and big and curly and picked
03:07out when I know that I'm going to be around a lot of people who don't have hair like that.
03:12Wow.
03:13Awesome.
03:13People will be like, ooh, like, how'd you get your hair like that?
03:17Is that really your hair?
03:18Like, that's funny to me.
03:20I mean, it's so, it's such a silly question.
03:22Sometimes I'll have black people ask me like, oh, how'd you get your hair like that curly?
03:27And I'm like, yo, we just all have different, we all have different textures.
03:30It literally grows from my head.
03:32I'm like, I don't know what to tell you, you just don't have it, you know?
03:37How do you feel when someone touches your hair?
03:41I think it all depends on how you're asking, what you're asking about, and why you're asking
03:45to touch my hair.
03:46Yeah.
03:47And if you're asking, period.
03:48If you don't ask, don't touch.
03:50That's true.
03:51When they lead hand first.
03:53And then ask you after.
03:54It's like, already.
03:56Ugh.
03:56Like, you've done it.
03:58Like, you're already in there.
03:59So, like, feel a way, and then I'm gonna feel some type of way about you.
04:03Some people, it's just kind of their nature in a way.
04:06Just because you don't understand something doesn't give you the liberty to run your fingers
04:12through my hair.
04:13Yeah.
04:14I mean, that's just rude.
04:15Right.
04:16It's just weird.
04:17Yeah.
04:17It's just like, you know, it's hair, and this is not a circus.
04:22So I think that the key takeaway here is really that everybody with natural hair has a different
04:27journey, a different experience, and different preferences to how they style their hair, how
04:31they experience life with their hair.
04:33We've had a ton of fun sharing our stories with you, and now we would love for you to
04:38comment below and share with us.
04:40Thanks for watching.
04:41We'll talk to you soon.
