Transcript
00:05My name is Sunny Shokre. I'm a photographer.
00:09I moved here from around 05 and I never fit into anything.
00:13When I was younger, I was like super stick thin
00:16and I had all these huge features on my face.
00:19My parents were always, you know, they didn't let me wear makeup or date
00:23or indulge in any vanities.
00:25The only vanity that they were into, my mom would always sort of offer the nose job.
00:31That was like the only thing that was like okay to do.
00:34Around is not a vain place. It's a really warm, amazing culture.
00:38The plastic surgery side of it is a little terrifying.
00:41When it comes to the nose, it's like the point of cosmetic optimization.
00:44Like that is the one place they've learned how to make money
00:47and they make a lot of money doing it.
00:50Girls are told at a young age to change their noses so they can get married, literally.
00:55They think it's like will bring you a better life.
00:58It's just a really Iranian way to be.
01:05I grew up wishing I was white, for sure.
01:08I wanted my name to be Amy.
01:10I definitely didn't want to be Iranian.
01:12You know, it took a really long time to appreciate my difference.
01:16I'm happy that I never gave in to getting a nose job
01:20because in the end of the day it doesn't matter.
01:23Who cares?
01:24It's so much better to overcome those really insignificant superficial speed bumps
01:30that are put in your way by like societal standards
01:32or, you know, these conceptions of beauty that are created by whoever.
01:35It's so much cooler to not care about those than to feed into them
01:40and physically alter your body.
01:42As a photographer, I've also always been more taken and moved by documentary images
01:49or portraits of real people with real faces.
01:54It's just so much more striking to me.
01:57Stunning.
01:58A gap in a tooth or a face full of freckles, a really interesting nose
02:02or, you know, things that you don't see every day.
02:06I think that if I had gotten a nose job, I would have always wondered
02:10if I would have ever grown to love my nose and that's really sad to me.
02:18Oh, you have a mouse.
02:20A real mouse?
02:21Yes!
02:22Did you see him?
02:23Yes!
02:23Oh my god!
02:25Elliot, go get him!
02:28Wake up!
02:29Motherfucker!
02:30It's your job!
