Let's bridge the gap between actual and practical sex education.
Transcript
00:09all right all right I'm gonna teach you about sex today yeah the penis goes in
00:20the vagina back forth back forth that gets stimulation going eventually that
00:26arousal is testes they get big they get mad they get full with ejaculate that ejaculate has sperms
00:33and if that sperm goes into the vagina and touches a little bitty egg bingo you are pregnant with a
00:42baby and that turns into child support payments that's how it happens if you don't want to get
00:49pregnant wear a condom better yet don't have sex trust me my ex-wife I pay through the nose
00:55any questions nerd what about other forms of birth control like the pill or an iud my mother has
01:02also mentioned diaphragms to me so what if you're not having sex in a vagina or like with a girl
01:07at
01:07all I'm only having sex with women but how do I know that they want to be having sex I've
01:11been reading a
01:12lot about consent on tumblr what's the clitoris for you have it on that chart over there and you haven't
01:16mentioned it once okay but what about pegging I saw a TV episode just a second
01:27what is that three two one soap boxing
01:38hi I'm Brennan and I'm Jackie I learned that prayer was the only effective form of birth control and I
01:44thought that my clitoris was a scary spider tumor until age 21 PS needless to say there are huge gaps
01:52in
01:52the sexual education we receive in school and the sexual lives we experience as people the reason
01:57for these gaps is deeply rooted in who dictates what we're taught patriarchy and why we're taught
02:03fear-based control take for example one of America's earliest sex ed pamphlets Sylvester Graham's 1834
02:10lectures on chastity Graham also responsible for the cracker warned against the immense evils of
02:17masturbation claiming that it could lead to warts constipation insanity and death scary shit right
02:26boys in the late 1800s rapid urbanization caused families to move from the farm to the city so we
02:34can no longer learn about the birds and the bees by watching the birds and the bees so in 1892
02:39the
02:40National Education Association promoted sexuality education as a necessary part the national curriculum but
02:47it took the rampant spread of STDs amongst American soldiers during World War one to get the government
02:52to really take action and start making sex ed films unfortunately these took the form of cautionary tales
02:58like damaged goods damaged goods is the story of an American soldier who sleeps with a prostitute the
03:06night before his wedding contracts syphilis passes it to his newborn baby loses his mind and commits suicide
03:15the end basically if you fuck anyone but your wife you're going to ruin lives and die a horrible
03:20death but it wasn't all scary penis shaming doom and gloom 1922 science of life depicts man's sexual
03:28desire as a powerful stallion that just needs to be tamed female sexual desire however does not get a
03:35sexy spirit animal it's never referred to because it doesn't exist duh but in 1946 girls got their own movie
03:45Kotex and Disney present the story of menstruation
03:49If Flo visits the Magic Kingdom apparently the film stresses that periods are normal so just that normal
03:57Really, don't be weird, you're going to make men uncomfortable!
04:00That's repressive as fuck!
04:02I know!
04:03Films like these set up the basic sex-ed narratives of the 20th century.
04:07Sex is dangerous, men are in control of it,
04:10and women are scary, hobbled sea monsters that bleed to death every month.
04:14At least along the way, kids were learning about contraception and how to protect themselves from STIs.
04:19But even this proved to be too provocative.
04:21Ironically, the biggest push against sex-ed came during the sexual revolution of the 60s and 70s.
04:28Groups like the Christian Crusade believed that sex education promoted moral depravity,
04:33while serving as a backdoor for communist indoctrination.
04:36Because horny people hate freedom and owning private property.
04:40By 1975, 20 state legislatures had voted to restrict or abolish sex education,
04:46and thus began the rise of abstinence-only sex-ed.
04:49If it weren't for the AIDS and HIV epidemic in the 80s,
04:52sex-ed might have disappeared completely.
04:55Right now, 37 states teach abstinence as a form of birth control.
04:59And in 35 states, parents can opt out their kids from sex-ed completely.
05:03The gaps in sex education have real impact on young people.
05:07Roughly one in four women will become pregnant at least once before their 20th birthday.
05:12Hashtag teen mom.
05:13And people 15 to 24 account for 25% of the sexually active population.
05:19Yet 50% of total acquired STIs.
05:25Hey kids.
05:26Perhaps you noticed that throughout our selected history of sex-ed that we never answered any
05:31of your questions about consent, pleasure, non-vaginal sex, queer sex, or anything of interest
05:38to your actual sex lives.
05:40That's why Refinery29 is launching sex school.
05:43The gap between what we learned in sex-ed and what we're learning in our sexual experiences
05:48is big.
05:49Way too big.
05:51So we're helping to connect those dots by talking about the realities of sex,
05:55from how it's done to how to keep it consensual, safe, healthy, and pleasurable all at once.
06:01Yeah!
06:02This is not the sex-ed you go in gym class.
06:09C.
06:10I told you that's what the clitoris was for.
06:13Mission accomplished.
