00:00Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States
00:07until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on.
00:15With Trump, 2016, we really thought this was rhetoric.
00:19I don't want him here.
00:20We have to protect our American citizens first.
00:22You have to wipe out their homes where they came from.
00:25You have to absolutely wipe them out.
00:27It's the only way you're going to stop terrorism.
00:28I'm voting for him. He's my man.
00:32It is my high honor to introduce to you the president-elect of the United States of America, Donald Trump.
00:43For us, it's like, okay, so he's going to be a president.
00:46All right, so what's going to happen next?
00:50They leaked the draft of the first executive order, which is the Muslim ban.
00:58This is what America looks like.
01:01This is what America looks like.
01:03This is what America looks like.
01:08My name is Rabia Athabani.
01:11My family were one of the first Yemeni-Americans, wave of Yemeni-Americans, to immigrate to New York City.
01:20My father joined his brother, who was already here.
01:24He always said that, you know, as soon as I settle, I'm going to petition for you guys and bring
01:28you here.
01:30Whenever he had a break, he would just go and he would record cassettes for us.
01:35And we used to do the same thing, and so we kept connected that way.
01:41I don't know if I knew what American meant at that time.
01:48I think throughout the years, and with a lot of really pivotal teachers and people in my life,
01:52I began to learn what America and American means.
01:57But it changed quite a lot.
02:01After 9-11, I would say.
02:07There is black smoke coming from both of the towers.
02:11It's a horrific scene here.
02:17We saw the towers coming down.
02:22I just remember that entire week, nobody left their home.
02:25People were just terrified.
02:27And we knew it was not going to be the same ever again.
02:35We're going to have a very, very strict ban, and we're going to have extreme vetting.
02:40When this Muslim ban happened, for me, was like between shock and a sense of powerlessness.
02:49I think it's a good idea with everything that's going on in the world right now.
02:52Donald Trump's executive order suspending the entry of Syrian refugees and of anyone from seven Muslim countries.
02:58And I just started tweeting and Facebooking because a lot of the people in my community were in kind of
03:05PTSD.
03:06They're re-experiencing post, you know, 9-11.
03:11And then I spoke to my husband, too, and my husband, I'm like,
03:16that was really difficult.
03:32My husband, Bashir Rahman, is an independent Yemeni journalist that has sacrificed his own safety and security
03:39and has dedicated his career in fighting extremist ideologies.
03:43And so he was forced to escape the war, and I'm petitioning for him to join me.
03:49He will not be able to enter because of this ban.
03:52So just because you may not be in my position,
03:55think about what can happen to you if we allow this to happen,
04:00and if we allow him to get away with this.
04:02And again, thank you so much for having me come to you.
04:19In the cold, in the rain, in the wind,
04:24taking off from work, all because of him.
04:28He owes me his life.
04:32I just had a fight with Bashir the other night.
04:34He feels like there's no meaning to his life anymore.
04:36He's been waiting, and he's the kind of person that's so used to working and moving and doing and producing.
04:41Here he is for almost a year and a half now doing nothing but just wait.
04:48It's creating a lot of issues in my relationship, that's for sure.
04:52It's hard. It's really difficult.
04:54To not know what's going to happen tomorrow or, you know, to know that there's this order signed by your
05:02own president
05:02that's supposed to be protecting my rights is actually infringing upon my rights.
05:10He signs it Friday, goes into effect that very night,
05:14and the New York Immigration Coalition texted me.
05:17He's like, we're at JFK.
05:18We need to come out here.
05:19This protest has started about here today.
05:22We have 10 people.
05:23Look behind me now.
05:24We are outside Terminal 4 at JFK.
05:26Protestants I spoke would say they are vowing to stay until all the KBs are released.
05:32And then I do them live feed and videotapes and said, look at these, look at this.
05:36You have rights.
05:37You need to come out.
05:38We're no longer going to go in hiding.
05:40We are Americans.
05:41This is unconstitutional.
05:42This is wrong.
05:43It was the most beautiful collective coming of people from everywhere that I've ever seen in my life.
05:53It was an on-call judge in the Eastern District of New York
05:56who granted the injunction request for an immediate stop to the executive order.
06:07We're a country of immigrants.
06:09You can't just write an executive order banning an entire class of people
06:13who's saying you're not allowed to come here.
06:16We have the Constitution.
06:17We don't live in a dictatorship.
06:24I think it was a couple of weeks, Linda sent me a message, and my dad was like,
06:29okay, we ought to do something besides just a rally.
06:31This is important to setting the second Muslim ban.
06:33We want to do human ban.
06:35So you do it by groups.
06:36There are two groups of ten.
06:38What's your group of ten, huh?
06:40You collars up in.
06:41So you guys are up in Romania.
06:44These are lives.
06:45These are children without their parents stuck in Egypt and Djibouti.
06:50These are Americans.
06:51We are America.
06:52This can't happen.
06:54And my husband, a year and a half after I married him, still not with me here in the U
06:59.S.
07:01If everybody's ready!
07:08If you look at American history, if you look at Vietnam, if you look at the Civil Rights Movement,
07:11when all these things come together,
07:16that's when change happens.
07:20No matter how many bans you're going to sign,
07:26we are no longer going to be silenced.
07:57No matter how many bans you need,
07:58You
