00:01Growing body hair is inevitable and sometimes it grows in places where we
00:06just don't want it to grow so I shave but when I do that I always feel like my
00:12hair is growing back thicker and darker than before so then I try other methods
00:17like waxing or lasering or tweezing and each time my hair grows back differently
00:23but oh yeah I forgot to mention those techniques fucking hurt and they each
00:28affect my skin and hair differently so today I'm really curious to know what
00:33actually happens to our skin and our hair when we use these removal techniques and
00:37methods and also I kind of want to know why do we even have body hair in the
00:41first place I mean what is the point of this hey rubber ducky I think it's time
00:47for the think tank I'm here with celebrity dermatologist Dr. Robert Anilic I'm having
00:54trouble with body hair at the moment so can we first just start with why do we
00:59as humans grow body hair right there's a protective component the hair that is on
01:04our scalp and our armpit or our genital area it does serve as some sort of a
01:08barrier against friction and discomfort you could imagine before current
01:12civilization and we were out relatively nude from you know bugs and bites and
01:16insects and things that might come along it serves as a sensory function when it
01:20kind of gets bristled or brushed you feel that on the skin we obviously tend to our
01:24hair very carefully today because it it affects how we perceive each other and
01:28that's also why it's so upsetting when your hair is not the way you want it to
01:31be so I actually heard that the function of eyebrows was so that when you
01:35sweat the eyebrows will actually trap that sweat before it gets into your eyes
01:39right so yes that does help with that it also helps with shadowing because
01:44there's a little bit of projection from the front of the face to protect the
01:46eyes as do the eyelashes how does hair actually grow and if you want to draw it
01:50I show you this lovely art pad I love it I feel like I'm in our class let's do it
01:54let's say that this is the skin surface beautiful okay and let's say this is
01:58where a hair shaft comes out of the skin there is a bulb which is at the base when
02:03this is very active and the hair is growing in upward and outward direction
02:07there's a technical term for that and it's called antigen antigen is occurring
02:12most of the time on our scalp which has about a hundred thousand hairs 90% of the
02:17time the hair is in antigen phase and the hair is growing out there's another phase
02:20that follows called catagen and that's when this area starts to break down and
02:26go away and after catagen we sit in the telogen phase and telogen is when this is
02:31gone but the hair shaft is still sitting out of the skin and just hanging out the
02:35hair is not growing anymore but it's still present and visible on this on the
02:39skin surface is this considered a dead hair it's a funny thing when people say dead
02:42hair because what makes up the hair follicle itself is essentially dead skin
02:46cells oh so now that I know that my head is a graveyard can we talk about perhaps
02:54the worst type of hair an ingrown what is an ingrown hair it's what's happening the
03:00hair tip is sharp it can actually curl back and grow into the skin cause a lot of
03:05inflammation I figured that in order to visualize this and really put it into
03:09action we would have a demonstration yes I have bought four plans for us today
03:18shaving tweezing waxing laser we're gonna do a demonstration okay learn how hair is
03:24removed in all four of these forms this is how we do it in medical school I think
03:29let's be clear yeah the very top of this vase is where the skin is right if I was
03:35gonna shave I would just that's perfect that is shaving all right tweezing yes the
03:42way this works I'm assuming is kind of like a he loves me he loves me not that's
03:46exactly right and you're pulling it and it's not being cut here but you're
03:49pulling out the hair from the root you got it waxing it's essentially tweezing but
03:59you're pulling everything out at once waxing would actually be more like this
04:04that's waxing now we're on to the torch okay this is scary so laser hair removal
04:09or we could call it laser hair reduction it's it's really the most effective way
04:13to have long-lasting hair reduction what's happening is we're using light it
04:17can be targeted at something and be absorbed at such a high intensity that it
04:21causes whatever we're targeting to vaporize and I can use the lasers in our
04:24office to target the hair alone leaving no scars and no evidence of
04:28treatment so this torch I've brought to work today is not necessarily the best
04:33demonstration of laser I am nervous it is fire not light I'm gonna be super
04:40scientific now I have lasered my underarms and I was told that before you laser you
04:45shave you do and the reason is that laser could target the surface hair and as we
04:50discussed when you shave or cut your hair it does nothing to the hair root we want
04:54the laser to pass right through to that hair root we're clean we're very clean
04:56we're ready for our laser treatment this plant will never grow again because we
05:02are literally killing the hair follicle and as we do the laser we would go down
05:05all the way to the hair root final takeaways hair is actually very important on
05:10the body yes and hair grows in three phases uh-huh anagen anagen catagen and
05:16t-legit that's right hair is cool but there are methods to remove it that's right if
05:23you're not happy with it there is shaving there is plucking there is waxing and
05:28there is lasering and all are effective hair removal techniques Dr. Robert Analik has a ton
05:33of hair follicle diagrams on his Instagram at Dr. Robert Analik you've got to follow
05:39him see you next time on the think tank
