00:05oh man oh another yeast infection oh gosh all right guys time for some toilet
00:15talk I'm no stranger to yeast infections yes I get them all the time and no I'm
00:21not afraid to say it I don't know why I get them but they're itchy they sting
00:25they burn and for some reason I always seem to get them at the most
00:28inconvenient of times and every time I get one I'm practically tripping over
00:33babies and puppies as I run to the nearest drugstore searching frantically
00:37for some antifungal medication to help ease my symptoms and what do you know
00:41another one bites the dust studies show that three out of four people that have
00:45a vagina will experience a yeast infection at some point in their lives I'm sure
00:49many of you have the same questions that I have and I guess you know what I'm
00:52thinking here it's time for the think tank and here I am with the city doc all
01:01right doc so I know I'm I seem super excited but the fact is I'm upset I have
01:08another yeast infection I don't know what's wrong with me I don't even really
01:11know what a yeast infection is so I feel like I can't get to the root of the
01:15problem until we do a little learning so a yeast infection yeast is fungus and some
01:21of us about one out of four women have fungus that's just in our vagina so yeast
01:26is not in everyone it's not in everyone about three out of four women will have
01:30yeast infections in their lifetime and about 40% of women will have multiple
01:34yeast infection for someone who doesn't know maybe maybe someone's watching this
01:38and is like I don't think I've ever had one can you describe what it looks like
01:41and what it feels like so yeast infections usually have a cottage cheese
01:45like discharge that comes out it doesn't have an odor usually so if it smells it's
01:51probably something else usually people have a lot of itching and also redness
01:56and some swelling that can happen I just want to know scientifically is there
02:00anything to know about the yeast like in terms of what it's made up of or is it
02:05just like yeast that we would bake bread with no it's not not the yeast that you
02:10would bake bread with okay this is not bread baking yeast no it's not so it is
02:15another species of fungus called Canada Canada Canada that oh Canada yes not
02:21Canada Canada oh yeah so there's many different species like within that about
02:27three but the most common one is Canada albican what if we just sort of set up a
02:32little demonstration to show what it looks like when yeast overgrown let's do it
02:37and I of course brought bread baking yeast okay because I don't have any spare
02:42Canada but I figure we could you know feed it some sugar yes which I've heard is a
02:48cause of yeast infections you're right overeating sugar yes so here are my
02:52tools okay excellent we've got water sugar yeah and yeast perfect a yeast
02:57infection is an overgrowth of yeast so we're gonna put three scoops of yeast and
03:03water honestly all right lots of yeast lots of over okay and sugar yes yeast
03:10love sugar that is how it over grows that's how it feeds itself and another
03:16thing that people forget is that beer and alcohol has lots of sugar so I've
03:21noticed that I've had some patients that when they have a lot of alcohol that it
03:25increases the number of yeast infections that they get okay so we're gonna let
03:29that sit and potentially it will start to bubble and overgrow what am I doing
03:34wrong in my daily life to cause these infections to occur so frequently I feel
03:39like I am sort of responsible with my sugar intake I do all the right things
03:43after having sex I take a shower and I clean and I pee and I do everything that
03:47I'm told to do I change my underwear I wear loose-fitting cotton underwear I do all
03:53the things but they still seem to come two other things besides the sugar is one
03:58sometimes when people have antibiotics that can actually interfere with the
04:02bacteria that normally is in the vagina and so yeast is usually put in check by
04:08bacteria but if the bacteria is eliminated then more yeast can grow so
04:12that's one thing to know another thing to know is that if there's increased
04:16estrogen in the body so particularly if someone is pregnant or if someone is
04:21taking a higher dose of birth control then it can be a cause of having more
04:27yeast infections as well yeast in addition to the sugar that we see loves a
04:31moist warm environment so if you keep your private area dry that can help
04:37decrease yeast infections as well but just making sure that you have like a
04:40change of clothes like after the gym or on the beach a change of a swimsuit could
04:45also really be helpful I find myself bringing two swimsuit bottoms to the
04:49beach yeah and sometimes I actually just take the bottom off all together and I
04:52wrap myself in a towel and I say YOLO I'm on the beach I love that I went to the
04:56doctor the first time that I thought I had a yeast infection but then every other
05:01time I'd get it I sort of just self-diagnose how can people know if they
05:05are self-diagnosing correctly you do want to make sure that you go to your
05:09doctor because it can be other things right so the most common cause of an
05:13infection or inflammation of the vagina is actually called bacterial vaginosis and
05:19that really is an overproduction of bad bacteria that happens in the vagina and
05:25then also you want to make sure that you don't have trichomonas which is a
05:28sexually transmitted disease that people can get gonorrhea chlamydia those are
05:32causes of infection
05:33the yeast
05:38this is what happens really in our vagina yes can you imagine so then when you go
05:44into your underwear you might see cottage cheese discharge coming out you know this
05:49is what happens doc I just can't it's all too real
05:53are you having a flashback
05:54oh goodness Lucy
05:57it's too close to home
05:58one thing I do want to make sure that I tell everyone no douching douching
06:03sometimes people want to put like a cleanser up into their vaginas in order to
06:07get extra clean and like kill the bacteria but remember I said that we need that we need
06:12bacteria we need a healthy balance of bacteria for our vaginas to be healthy
06:15just regular soap and water even just water to that area is okay
06:19alright people at home if you are suffering from yeast infections
06:23step one see your doctor
06:25yes
06:25step two take all the necessary precautions to try to diminish the infection
06:30yes
06:30wearing loose fitting underwear decreasing your sugar intake cleaning off nicely but
06:36not douching
06:37and hopefully you'll be in a little bit of a better spot
06:40yes
06:40thank you to the city doc for joining me on the think tank
