00:00The first time I said feminist bookstore, everybody said no.
00:03If you put feminist in the title, nobody's going to come.
00:05And I was like, well, who's nobody?
00:19For me, in my opinion, I don't pursue things for the love of money.
00:23I pursue things for the love of meaning and paying back service to my community.
00:27And the thing that saved my life and has given me my strength and my identity
00:31and for my whole life and well-being is black feminism.
00:36And so I decided to pursue it despite what everybody told me to.
01:01When I was a young girl, my mom had Ebony and Essence magazines in the house.
01:05And I knew who I was from a young age.
01:08I don't think that that's the same thing that's happening with young girls right now.
01:12I don't think that they have the same access to positive images of blackness and black womanhood
01:17that they should have.
01:18And I wanted to create a space that allowed for all of that.
01:21And not just for black young girls, but for all girls that are struggling in terms
01:24and women who are struggling in their identity and need to be affirmed.
01:29And be okay with being smart and vivacious and bold in this world.
01:33So I wanted to create a space like that.
01:34And I wanted to create a space like that.
01:40And I wanted to create a space like that.
01:53Belle Hooks, she talks about having a community of resistance and a community of love.
01:58And for me, it's a community of accountability, folks that hold me down.
02:02And I believe that is important.
02:04I believe it's essential.
02:06I don't think that people should do things in isolation.
02:08I didn't grow up that way.
02:10Black feminism and womanism didn't teach me that.
02:13So I do things in community and it's part of my ethic.
02:21This has added a lot of depth to it because now I'm living and breathing and creating for
02:26someone whose mind custom made baked by me and will be delivered by me.
02:33So I feel it's, it's, I want, I want my child to be proud of this.
02:38Boy or girl proud and hold this legacy of educating and paying forward into our community.
02:57Kids and friends.
