00:00I'm scared. Are you scared? No it's good. Well now I am. Hi I'm Aaron Greenea, co-founder
00:07of IGK Hair and IGK Salons. And I'm Jess and I'm from Refinery29. Today we are
00:13gonna be talking about how to cut your own hair. We're gonna talk about how to
00:17safely texturize your hair for a little bit more movement. We're gonna talk about
00:21how to safely trim a bang that's already there and then safely trim your ends. And
00:27me as a professional will help guide you with that. My recommendation really is
00:31to to not do it at all but I do know that people are gonna try and do it. So
00:36I
00:36think today I'll be able to help you as an in-between. Like you still are going to
00:41the hairdresser but we are gonna help with some in-between issues. Are you ready?
00:46Yes. I'm gonna show her two techniques to texturize and add movement in her haircut.
00:54If you're going to do this at home I would say that the tweezer man gets the most
00:59easily obtainable scissor. So I want to see how you hold them. I can help you with
01:04that part. Is that right? The ring finger goes here and pinky on them. This is called
01:07the tang. I'll try it your way. Okay let's section your hair a little bit. The goal is
01:11to get that part out of the way. So now we're dealing with less hairs. If you pick up
01:15the hair you want to make sure that that section is is clean, right? There's no
01:19twists. The most important thing is you want to keep the scissor or shear going
01:24in a parallel direction as the hair. The more you turn like this the more chop.
01:31Inside. There you go. It's okay. Perfect. It's perfect. You're like you're doing great.
01:37Yeah. We're cutting inside the length of the hair. This is what's gonna separate
01:42that bottom and give a little bit of movement. Exactly. Oh great. So what's
01:47technique number two? So you just twist like this. You're gonna take the scissor and you're
01:52just gonna kind of tap it a little bit down the hair shaft and let it go. Let's see if
02:00I can do this. You want to keep this shear again as close to a direction of the hair like
02:05that. That's great. Yeah. See you're cutting some hair. It'll fall. Very nice. I'm now
02:15here with Alyssa. She wants to trim her own bangs. I'm curious if you've done this before.
02:20The first and only time I tried to trim them myself, I cut my eyelashes off. There we go.
02:25So that was not fun. I do have a couple of tips that might make it a little bit easier.
02:30She has a lot
02:31of hair going forward. I would recommend sectioning that in half. If you have a bobby pin on that you
02:39can
02:39keep that out of the way. You want to tuck both of your sides out of the way. Comb it
02:44forward and
02:46then tap a little bit. You see how that kind of finds the shape, right? We want to keep the
02:51hair
02:52away from the eyebrow and the eyelash. So the best way to do that is scoop it up. Yeah, scoop
02:58it up and
02:58and in the comb. You don't need to take a giant section like that. I would go and really baby
03:02step
03:03small section and then you just want to rest it on your forehead. Make sure the comb is square,
03:07your elbow, everything is straight. You relax, take a deep breath. So we put the scissors in your
03:15hands so it's comfortable. This is wrong though. Here we go. Like this? There you go. This is perfect.
03:20Next technique is keeping the scissor pointed in the same direction as the hair. Go ahead and start.
03:26Do I start from here? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. It's okay. Just relax. It's perfect. I feel like I'm cross-eyed.
03:35So to maintain the round shape, just kind of come forward like this. And this is what is called
03:41over direction. Right. It's saving the length on this side. So when you return it to right
03:46on the direction, it will end up being a little bit longer. You'd want to pick up just a tiny
03:52little
03:52bit of the section before so you can see the length. Right? So it's called a guide. You see?
03:57Yeah. I see that it's a little shorter. Okay. So now I'm just making this even. Yep. Everything
04:02under control and go just straight. If you keep your comb square, you'll have a tendency to keep
04:08the line square. What do you think? Now let it out. Okay. It's great. I feel like I didn't do
04:13anything.
04:13That's okay though. A little by little. It's better that it did nothing than too much. Yeah. So let's do
04:19the
04:19same idea, right? A little bit of a new section, a little bit of the old. You're doing really good.
04:25Let's continue on this side. Ready? Yep. I like how I'm asking you if you're ready.
04:31So we'll go back to center. I got the hang of it now. Yep. And I would say the most
04:36important for
04:37this step is to soften some of that extra weight out of there. And then you see the line a
04:42little bit
04:43better. Sick. Amazing. You have a bank trip. Yay. I'm here now with Emma. I really am just interested
04:54in getting rid of some of the split ends and not taking away any of the length on my hair.
04:59First,
05:00I would recommend to section your hair. Keep it easy and just separate your hair in half and put the
05:06top
05:07up in like a top knot. So now that's out of the way and she's just dealing with the split
05:12ends
05:12on the bottom. How she's holding the hair is great. You have a clean flat section. These pieces
05:18that are popping up, these are all your split ends. Just start by cutting those away. As long as you're
05:24not angling the sheer towards towards a blunt like this, if you keep it straight, you're going to have
05:30soft. So you keep it low and then you just again do the same step. It's perfect. I wasn't so
05:38bad. No,
05:38no. Easy. Right? You feel okay? In the back, this is going to be the most difficult section. You want
05:44to keep it low, as low as possible. And you definitely don't want to take any of the length.
05:49And there would be one more section on this side. As minimal as this is, it will, you will see
05:54a
05:55difference. It feels better. So then we can take the rest of your hair down. The section that is most
06:00important really is this, this front section off the part. This is one where you want to take great care
06:07in
06:07and just grab the entire top section, small sections, and just pick at it. Bye dead end.
06:14I, as a professional, was okay with this whole thing. And you did really well. Feels great to run
06:21my fingers through and not get snagged on the split ends and the dry bits. Thank you. Yeah, thank you.
