00:00These braids are so perfect. I could just walk out right now. I mean, not right now.
00:07My name is Ryan and welcome to Hair Me Out. My hair has always been a
00:12representation of who I am, reflecting different stages of my life. I'm excited
00:18for you to follow along as I get a 90s inspired hairstyle for the very first
00:22time by stylist Nigella.
00:30So we're gonna start off with a blow-dry? Sounds good. I'm also like not tender-headed at all.
00:35We have a lot of length, too. This girl is really thick. We have volume. We can go super straight.
00:43Yeah, I just started changing my hair up last year. I got a weave, I got a sew-in,
00:48and I was like, ooh, I like this. I like to be different characters.
01:00So we're gonna go into braiding. Your texture is really thick. If I can
01:04minimalize how much cornrows I have, but also pattern-wise, it will be great,
01:08because it won't be bulky. I'm not gonna do them too small. I don't really believe in tiny cornrows.
01:14Depending on the hair type, it might be a little bit too much tension. You can experience breakage.
01:23Now I'm attaching the extensions. My confidence has really changed since I was young when it comes
01:31to my hair. Before middle school is when I started going to the salon and getting like actual styles
01:38done to my head that I wanted. I wanted to get my hair pressed out. I feel like a lot
01:45of black
01:45parents were very strict with hair. I had to convince my parents on why I wanted to get a
01:51relaxer. Oh yeah. You know? It gave us an excuse to kind of express ourselves and also get away from
01:56our parents that didn't want to give you like a yes to certain hair styles. Right. My hair has always
02:02been symbolic of like how I feel at the time. When I was a teenager, like I liked the twist
02:08and the
02:08butterfly clips. So that was me kind of being independent and being like, this is the style that I want.
02:14And relaxers were so revered in middle and high school. But then in college, something happened
02:21where it was just like frowned upon. Like, oh, you get creamy crack.
02:27It was woke. It was woke. I don't think anything's wrong with relaxers at all. Hey, like to each their
02:34own. But it was like 20 years of me just straightening my hair and not knowing what it
02:39was underneath all of that. And now having an afro sometimes or the high top fade, blowing it out
02:47like Grace Jones, the confidence has built. I felt like my true self when I did the big chop and
02:53started
02:54growing my hair out naturally. I know I wanted braids. And then when I looked at your Instagram profile,
03:02I was like, oh, this is her braids with a twist. What inspired this style?
03:09I just wanted to do something different. And who doesn't like the 90s ever? I feel like what you're
03:15in. Oh my gosh, right. I think it will never be the same as it is today with the trend
03:20coming back.
03:21It sounded pretty crazy when I was describing it to the lady in the beauty supply store. I was like,
03:25I want to do box braids with a leave out. And she's like, with human hair? And I'm like, yes.
03:30And she's
03:30like, gives me that look like you're bringing that back. I like the shock factor after someone gets a
03:40haircut, like how much they realize that they needed it. Low key, your hair appointment sometimes is like
03:46a little therapy session, you know? I like to see when people come in one mood and leave out another
03:51on a good note. So it's really fun. As a hairstylist, I'm there to like give great advice
03:57and also build their confidence and self-esteem. What I hate is when everybody just wants to touch
04:04your hair. Oh my God. I was working in a hotel where a lot of tourists were coming in and
04:08they were
04:08just like, you're so cute. Hair is very fragile. It's a lot of tending to it. After you do all
04:14of that,
04:15like you don't even want to touch your hair. I don't touch my hair. My boyfriend was like,
04:19babe, do you have to sleep with that scarf? I'm like, yep. Yeah, we do. Because if I don't,
04:23my hair is going to break from the cotton sheets. Right, right. If I can't put cotton on my hair,
04:29your hands don't need to be in it. Right. Yeah.
04:37Are we thinking about this? We can do that. We're going to start seeing girls walking around with,
04:44you know, your hairdo. Yeah. They're going to be like, oh, this is a B.O.B.
04:48Yes. I like calling it a B.O.B. I think we created a name today.
04:57Are you ready to see your new hair? Yes. Awesome.
05:01Oh, I love it. It looks so good. It's so you. Love. I'm getting like,
05:07Beyonce Bob vibes. I love it so much. It's amazing. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Thank you.
05:16You're welcome, hun. Enjoy. I love it so much. I keep wanting to just. I know.
05:23I'm really into this braid out Bob. It turned out better than I could have ever imagined.
05:28It's really important for me to be able to express myself through my hair. I love that I never have
05:33to be stuck with a certain style and that my hair can change just as much as I do.
05:38So thank you.
05:38Yeah.
05:39Yeah.
05:40Yeah.
05:41Yeah.
