00:00Being a woman, but I think even more specifically being a mom, has been one of the greatest
00:05assets in building this business.
00:07Being a full-time mom, being a full-time single mom, is really challenging in and of itself.
00:12You know, there's sacrifice.
00:15Motherhood, having my daughter do the things that I did, having my sons here is rewarding
00:23to me.
00:23My mom placed me in a position to encourage that.
00:28I didn't want to go out to work, I wanted to stay home with the children, so I started
00:31this cake business only after my mother asked me to help her, and my daughter picked it up.
00:37I did not know that she was paying that much attention to what I was doing because she and
00:42my children, sons, helped, but they only helped when they figured out how much I was going to
00:48pay to, okay.
01:00I really didn't think that brands were speaking, not only to me, but this generation of parents,
01:05and the future generations of parents, and I think that that was so incredibly eye-opening
01:10to me.
01:10What I realized is that the mom was as much the customer as the kid was, and how do you
01:17speak to her?
01:17And it's not speaking down to her, it's not being condescending, but recognizing that mom
01:22is sophisticated, she's smart, she's savvy, she's demanding, she's the exact same person
01:27that she was before she got pregnant or before she became a mom.
01:30This adds a lot of depth to it because now I'm living and breathing and creating for someone
01:35who's mine, custom-made, baked by me, and will be delivered by me.
01:48Really understanding what's important to me as a mom, not what culture thinks is important
01:54to me, or what society is saying should be important to me, but really knowing what those
02:01things are.
02:01So for me, this has brought life and more meaning to my pregnancy and vice versa.
02:07This is really, I have lived my life with my nieces and my nephews and my smaller cousins,
02:11and I've always strived to be an example for them, not perfection, but just an example of
02:16what human imperfection and folks who are striving to be their best selves are.
02:27I want my child to be proud of this, boy or girl proud, and hold this legacy of educating
02:33and paying for it into our community.
02:35They think for me it's easy because I wake up every day and I say, how am I going to
02:39build
02:39this legacy for my daughter?
02:50I want her to see that you can do well in the world by doing good in the world.
02:54For my daughter, if she chooses to step into the business, I'm here to support her as my mom was.
03:04I want her to understand.
