00:00Do you code switch?
00:01Code switching is the switching or alternate uses of different languages or linguistics
00:06in conversation.
00:08So code switching is more than just a voice.
00:10The way you present yourself, the way you might move your hands, the way you dress,
00:15all of that.
00:16Basically, I'll be talking to my homegirls like, yeah, girl, he did this, he did that,
00:20da-da-da-da-da, ah-ah-ah, all that good stuff.
00:22But then I'll come into work like, yes, Jim, absolutely, that's great, fantastic idea.
00:26I think that's wonderful.
00:27Black people are really resilient and ingenious in that way where we can deploy all kind
00:32of different tactics to achieve a certain social mobility, to keep ourselves safe.
00:37I mean, I'm definitely code switching when the police pull me over.
00:40I learned how to code switch at a very young age.
00:43I've been code switching, let me see, I was born in 93.
00:46I've probably been code switching since, like, 96.
00:48The problem that needs to be changed is the value that we assign to the way white people
00:54talk and the way that we devalue the way that black people talk.
00:58And that's just what it is.
01:01I'll see you next time.
