Jessie was used to a tiny living space after growing up in New York City, so moving into her bus wasn't a big transition. See how she made a Greyhound into a home on this episode of Sweet Digs.

00:00Hi, I'm Jessie.
00:01Welcome to my Mobile Suite digs.
00:03Come check it out.
00:05The bus was $7,000, and all in all, I spent $125,000 renovating it.
00:10Currently, I'm parked in Asbury Park, New Jersey,
00:12and I pay $100 a month in rent.
00:14Expenses were carpenters, electricians.
00:17The largest cost was the master carpenter
00:19that I hired to do all of the interior woodwork.
00:21I found the bus on eBay, and I loved
00:23the aesthetic of a 1966 Greyhound.
00:26This is my reading nook, where I like to just cut off
00:29with my blanket and read.
00:31But I also use the space for whenever
00:32I don't want to fold clothing.
00:34I just kind of throw it on, so it's my catch-all chair.
00:36Growing up, I had a ritual with my mom.
00:38She would wake me up early every Sunday morning,
00:40and we would clean the entire apartment
00:42while she blasted either Queen or classical music.
00:45So for me, it was always something that you just kept up with.
00:48A lot of the items that I have throughout my home
00:51come from my travels.
00:52I bought the pillow in South Africa.
00:54I got it when I was studying abroad there.
00:56It's embroidered by women in a township,
00:58and it gives back to their community.
01:00I also bought this carved wood box in Hawaii at a thrift store.
01:03It was actually not for sale.
01:04The owner told me that someone was passing away on the island
01:07and wanted to give it to me as long as it was something
01:10that I was going to keep in value in my home.
01:12Over here, I have a seven-foot closet.
01:14It extends to the same area that this does.
01:17It's all one pole.
01:18They're larger than anything that I had in New York City.
01:20I grew up in Manhattan.
01:21I had always lived in small spaces, so it made downsizing pretty easy
01:25because all of my apartments were around the same size as the bus,
01:29which is 400 square feet.
01:30I decided to downsize more so because I wanted to live outdoors and spend less.
01:34I love going hiking and boating and swimming.
01:37So for me, having this outdoor lifestyle was only possible by having a tiny home.
01:42Back here is my bedroom.
01:44My favorite space in the bus is definitely the bed.
01:46It's just super cozy.
01:48I love to sleep and just cuddle up here, especially on cold winter nights.
01:51I love to read with this antique lamp that I have in here.
01:54I just started War and Peace for probably the fifth time.
01:57I would like to finish it.
01:59This is my kitchen area.
02:00I have lots of counter space.
02:01The stove is propane.
02:02I have the propane tank under the sink.
02:04It's a 20-pound propane tank, which you could fill at any Lowe's or Home Depot.
02:08The water tank is underneath the bed.
02:09I think it's about 50 gallons, 47 to 50 gallon tank.
02:12And there's PEX piping, which leads it to the kitchen and bathrooms.
02:16To heat the water, I have an instant hot water heater, which is underneath the sink,
02:19and it's meant for RVs or tiny homes, so it vents through the floor.
02:22One thing that is really different from apartments or other places that I've lived
02:26is that I'm much more conscious of the amount of water and propane that I'm using.
02:30I recently learned how to cook spanakopaca, a vegan version.
02:33I had a bacon in the oven with pastry dough, and it was a huge hit.
02:37The plates and fruit bowl are a matching set for my great-grandmother.
02:40They were from their apartment when they lived in the tenements on Delancey Street.
02:44When the apartment burned down, they saved the plates and moved to Brooklyn with them.
02:48There's hidden storage throughout the bus.
02:50Bus battery, charger, all of that stored in these cubbies down here.
02:53In the baseboard of the kitchen, I decided not to waste the space, and I put utensils down here.
02:59And in the back of the bus, I have cubby holes acting as a night table all around the bed.
03:04There's no dishwasher, but I have a large sink, so I'm able to pile my dishes in there,
03:08but I'm usually pretty fast with cleaning.
03:09I have my shower over here.
03:11In here, I have mahogany wood strip floors, so when I step out of the shower, I can drip dry
03:16off.
03:16All of the flooring underneath the mahogany wood drains to the same place that the shower drains to.
03:22And I don't have a gray water tank, so I make sure that all my shampoos, conditioners, and body washes
03:26are biodegradable.
03:28Here I have my bathroom.
03:29I have my mirror and sink in here.
03:31I previously had a compostable toilet, and I'm looking to update.
03:34Up here, I have the driving area and also the guest bed and couch area.
03:38So far, I've only had a couple people over.
03:40Mainly people stay in the bed with me, just cozier back there.
03:44But I do have a pullout bed in the front of the bus that's a queen size and fits two
03:47people.
03:48The front area of the bus has a ton of windows.
03:50The windshield is massive.
03:51I would like to figure out a way to make it more private for when I have guests over.
03:56This is the original seat and steering wheel from this 1966 GMC Greyhound commuter bus.
04:01The horn still works.
04:03When the bus is in motion, I secure everything so that nothing breaks.
04:07I don't have many delicate things, but for my plates and all of those items,
04:11I just wrap them up when I'm on the go.
04:12The tiny home movement is awesome.
04:14I do hope that it becomes more mainstream, and I think that it has been lately.
04:17People are surprised when they find out I live on a bus.
04:20I think specifically when I was on dating apps.
04:23It's the best place I've ever lived because I designed everything,
04:26so it was really just custom to everything I wanted in closet size, kitchen size,
04:31all of these different spaces, and it has the aesthetic that I just really enjoy living in.
04:36I'm selling because I want to travel abroad for some time.
04:39For my next dream home, I think I actually want something even smaller and easier to drive in cities.
04:43I amillas.
04:46Thank you, my boss.
04:46I amiss Macoч yellow, El excuse me.
04:50Thank you for listening.
