00:00King Charles III's visit to Guyana is bringing renewed attention to Britain's colonial past and growing calls for an apology
00:08over slavery.
00:09The monarch began his two-day visit Thursday with a state reception in Georgetown, meeting Guyanese President Ifran Ali and
00:17attending a cultural celebration.
00:20He's also expected to meet business owners and indigenous village leaders, known as Toshawaz.
00:27Beyond the ceremonies, difficult conversations are taking centre stage.
00:31President Ali, who invited the king, says acknowledging slavery is not enough. An apology must follow.
00:38In an interview with ITV News, Ali described slavery as one of humanity's darkest chapters and accused Britain of exploiting
00:46the region and destroying lives.
00:48The British government, however, continues to reject calls for an apology or reparations.
00:53Charles now heads to Antigua and Bermuda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting.
