00:00Just, yeah, just say, just say right in front of you, buddy.
00:03Yeah, over there.
00:05Hi, my name is Reagan.
00:06And I'm Sydney.
00:07And welcome to our suite dorm.
00:08Or our suite digs.
00:09We stay in Butler Hall at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.
00:12We pay $2,735 a semester.
00:16That ends up being about $780 a month per person.
00:19I think the amount of money that we're spending for this dorm room is,
00:22I feel like it's like a lot, but I don't know how much it is to live in the real
00:25world.
00:25I would say it's a little bit pricey, but it's worth it for the college experience.
00:29I'm super close to the river, all my classes, and the square.
00:32But I also really like the community here because all of our RAs are super sweet and inviting,
00:36and we always have game nights and community nights where I get to meet a lot of people.
00:41So over this way we have my desk, and one step this way is my bed and our futon.
00:47This room compared to my room back home is about half the size,
00:50so it was definitely a really hard transition moving in with one other person.
00:54The first thing you see whenever you walk into the dorm is a hand-woven Persian rug
00:57that we found at the thrift store.
00:58One night in the summer before we moved to Texas State,
01:01Sydney and I had a sleepover, and we were actually researching where to find Persian rugs,
01:05and then when we went to the thrift store in the morning we found one right in front of our
01:08face.
01:09The ones we were looking at online were thousands of dollars, and we found this one for only $20.
01:13The most sentimental items in my room are the photos of family and friends and my memory box.
01:18My memory box is a collection of handwritten notes and letters from friends
01:21and pictures or flowers that I've gotten since I've been at college.
01:24The drive home from here is about three and a half hours,
01:27so I really like having all these pictures and stuff to remind me of the ones I love.
01:30I'm a social work intended major, and I chose to study it because my older sister actually graduated here,
01:35and seeing the career path that she chose really inspired me to help people.
01:39Probably the scariest thing about this dorm is having to climb up the wobbly bed.
01:43My desk is pretty messy most of the time, so I usually clear off a little tiny space.
01:47I can climb up my bed from my desk.
01:48I'm always scared I'm going to roll off the bed while I'm sleeping, which hasn't happened yet.
01:52The most annoying part about living in a dorm is definitely sharing the bathroom with so many girls.
01:56We share four toilets, four sinks, and four showers with over 50 girls.
01:59You can hear every time the door opens, every time someone flushes the toilet or takes a shower.
02:06Which is kind of annoying.
02:08And then we have my bed, and under here we keep our food and our TV, and then I have
02:14my desk over here.
02:15My favorite part about the dorm room is the large window we have.
02:18We have a perfect view of Old Main, which is a really pretty old building.
02:21In most dorms, the windows are smaller than the one we have, so we have a pretty big-sized window
02:26for our room.
02:26The most sentimental item I have is the flower my boyfriend gave me the first time we hung out.
02:30I let it dry, and then I put it in a little frame.
02:33I've been dating my boyfriend for almost a year, and we've been doing long distance.
02:36Also, I have a picture of my cat on the wall.
02:39My cat's name is Beans.
02:40I've had her for four years.
02:41This was actually my brother's cutout that he took to college, and then I stole it when I went to
02:45college.
02:46My biggest fear is that she'll forget who I am.
02:48I came in with my major as biology, and then I took AP biology my senior year, and I hated
02:55it.
02:55So I Googled majors, and the first one was anthropology.
02:59I used to watch a lot of datelines with my mom, and so I thought forensic anthropology would be a
03:04good fit for me.
03:05And then my closet.
03:07My least favorite part about the dorm room would be the closet.
03:09I have a lot of clothes, and not all of my clothes fit in there.
03:12We go home a lot, and we swap out the clothes we have for like winter, summer, spring.
03:17We do share clothes a lot.
03:18If I could steal one thing from Citi's closet, it is a pink and white striped Urban Outfitter shirt that
03:24I steal about once a week.
03:25And if I could steal something from Regan's closet, I would steal her black and white sweater, which is the
03:29only thing that fits me in her closet.
03:31Because she's taller than me, so I can wear more of her clothes.
03:33And she just owns crop tops, so everything is like...
03:36Sydney and I met in the second grade whenever we had lockers next to each other.
03:40I really had to work up the courage to go talk to her because I thought she was so cool.
03:43And one day she asked me to be her friend.
03:45She responded with, oh my gosh, I was going to ask you the same thing.
03:48I knew we were going to be best friends immediately because we both bonded over the Jonas Brothers.
03:53When we both found out that we were accepted to Texas State, it was a given that we were going
03:56to room together.
03:56We had a class together senior year, and the only thing we did in that class was look at Pinterest
04:01and start designing our door.
04:03Sydney and I would have sleepovers in the summer where we would plan what kind of decor we would have,
04:06and we would just fantasize about the different bedding we would choose.
04:10We came up with the idea for the setup by looking at the Texas State website.
04:14We saw a picture of how one person set it up, and then we just kind of copied the idea
04:18and made it ours.
04:19We usually shop together.
04:21We would just put everything in the same cart and have the cashiers split it down the middle, so we
04:24were paid equally for everything.
04:25Our parents kept telling us, the futon won't fit, the rugs are too big, and we were like, no, we're
04:30going to prove you wrong.
04:31So we looked for a piece of chalk and your dad's measuring tape.
04:34We ended up drawing out the actual size of our dorm using all the measurements of the closet, the bed,
04:39the desk.
04:40It was a bit shocking that the whole dorm could actually just fit in your driveway.
04:43I do like lots of color in the room. I try to keep it colorful and bright.
04:48I would describe our home style as eclectic and cozy.
04:51I think we wanted a lot of art on the walls to cover the sterile vibes that come from the
04:56cement walls.
04:58The best part about living with my best friend is it's an endless sleepover every single night.
05:02As we're falling asleep, we'll just talk to each other until we're making no sense, and I will send her
05:05like a funny thing on social media and just wait for her to giggle.
05:08It's really fun. A lot of people tell us not to room with your best friend, but I think it
05:12would be a lot harder not having my best friend here.
05:14We can relate to each other and we can get deeper than I would with like a stranger.
05:18He said, come in as best friends, leave as enemies, but we honestly haven't really had many fights or like
05:24don't really disagree about much.
05:25So I think it's been really fun.
05:27Since living with Sydney, I've noticed that we've been saying a lot of the same things at the same time.
05:31Oh, yeah. Yes.
05:32And our laughs have morphed into one.
05:36I actually have noticed that. That's really scary.
05:38It's like the same pitch.
05:38Next year we actually are moving off campus to a two bedroom apartment and we're so excited.
05:43The rent for next year is about $640 each.
05:46We're excited to have more rooms to decorate like our own bathrooms, the living room, the kitchen, our own rooms.
05:52We won't have to have the meal plan and we actually get to cook and we can bake cookies finally.
05:57I don't think you bake cookies.
05:58Yes, I do bake cookies.
05:59You've never given me any.
06:02One piece of advice I have for incoming freshmen would be to talk about things with your roommate
06:07and don't let them just build up because that would cause a lot more issues in the long run.
06:11Just keep in mind that you're sharing a space with someone and you need to be respectful
06:15and it'll help you get along and not fight about anything.
06:18The last time we got sassy with each other was last night.
06:21We were trying to clean the room and I wanted to watch a movie.
06:24I didn't want to watch the same movie as her.
06:26Imagine like the most sassy way you can turn my movie.
06:29No, I turned it on and you were like, we don't have to watch it.
06:32And I was like, I turned it on.
06:33You turned your back to me and looked on your phone and I was like, I giggled at something
06:36and he was like.
06:38But then we went and ate and we were fine.
