The Daisy Wheel App teaches women how to perform a breast self exam
Transcript
00:00Hi, I'm Betsy Nyland and I'm president of the Get In Touch Foundation. The Get
00:04In Touch Foundation is a global breast health nonprofit and we educate
00:07everyone on how to perform a breast self-exam. So I got involved with the
00:12Get In Touch Foundation about 14 years ago after my mom's breast cancer
00:15diagnosis. My mom had been performing breast self-exams her entire life and
00:20when she was doing a breast self-exam and found a lump on her breast she went
00:24to the doctor and the doctor said don't worry about it come back in a year it's
00:27probably nothing but my mom knew her body better than anyone else and so she was
00:33able to speak from a place of confidence. So she went to a different doctor and
00:36found out she had breast cancer in both breasts. With the diagnosis she realized
00:41that she needed to not only teach me my younger sister how to perform breast
00:44self-exams but that everyone should be armed and equipped with this
00:48information on how to perform a breast self-exam. Because my mom did a breast
00:51self-exam and found her breast cancer early on she found it at a treatable
00:55stage and so it extended her life. It is that important. So she started the Get
00:59In Touch Foundation and created the Daisy Wheel program which has eight steps on
01:04how to do a breast self-exam and we provide that program free to schools all
01:09over the world. Three years ago I stepped up as president of the organization and am
01:13so excited to be carrying on my mom's life-giving mission and legacy. She
01:18unfortunately passed away three years ago but we're launching an app that will
01:22educate everyone on how to perform a breast self-exam and make that breast
01:26self-exam simple appropriate and routine. We have reached over a million students
01:30with our paper program so having an app where the reach is limitless I mean
01:35anyone can have access to this at any time all over the world and nobody should
01:40pay for this information it should be free and accessible for everyone. So the
01:44Daisy Wheel app will be available for both Apple and Android phones and be
01:49completely free to download so there will be an interactive Daisy Wheel with the
01:53eight steps on how to perform a breast self-exam. It will have a calendar sync
01:57function so you can remember to do your breast self exams regularly and it will be
02:02available in nine different languages. Although the app won't prevent breast
02:06cancer it will encourage you to know your body better than anyone else and
02:10allow you to speak from place of confidence so you will be able to identify a
02:14change if there ever are any changes with your body. So this shouldn't replace going
02:18to the doctor but at least you can use this app to know your normal and know
02:23what is your baseline for your breast tissue. The mission of the Get In Touch
02:27Foundation and the work that we do is really just encouraging everyone to know
02:31your normal.
