00:00Fuel shortages and soaring petrol prices are putting daily lives and businesses under severe pressure in Malawi.
00:08In the capital, Lilongwe, drivers and motorcycle taxi operators are spending hours and sometimes days in queues as they wait
00:16for scarce supplies.
00:18Malawi has the highest petrol prices in Africa, adding two years of fuel shortages and worsening economic pressure in a
00:25country already struggling with foreign currency shortages.
00:32We are spending nights at different fueling stations in search of fuel because it is usually delivered at night.
00:39So we leave our families alone at home to spend a night at a fueling station waiting for the fuel.
00:44And sometimes when it comes, it's finished before we can even buy it.
00:50As you can see, this is night time and here I am on the queue in search of fuel.
00:55This means that my household chores have been suspended.
00:58I went to pick up my keys from school and I have been here with them since 4 p.m.
01:03This is 8 p.m. and I have not yet bought the fuel.
01:09Petrol now costs around $3.24 a litre as the war in the Middle East pushes up fuel prices.
01:18That is the highest price in Africa and the second highest in the world according to the global petrol prices.
01:26The government has now sought emergency financing, including through the sale of coal reserves to pay suppliers.
01:34Just the fact that fuel is scarce, everything in terms of prices have gone up.
01:40Now, what that means in regard to food security is that the ability of households to have savings for seed,
01:49for fertilizer is reduced.
01:51Energy Minister John Matanga said on Monday that more than 23 million litres of petrol and diesel had been procured,
01:58with nearly half in transit and some already reaching filling stations.
