Most people don't spend too much time thinking about which way to part their hair. They just pick a side and stick to it — often for years. But, change can be good. Because we're all for switching up our looks every now and then, we've enlisted the help of hairstylist Adam Maclay to guide us in the art of parting.

In this tutorial, he helps our director of production Kate Hyatt get a sleek, but not overly polished, side ponytail. Check it out, and get inspired to let your hair fall in new directions.

00:03It's all about you, and that, and that.
00:05Yep, it's all about us.
00:11I've always wanted a really deep side part, so today I'm really hoping Adam can show me some great tips.
00:17So Kate, tell me a little bit about your fears about this deep side part.
00:20So my natural part is in the center, which is where it always falls,
00:24and I'm just really curious how to make that change feel natural to me and look really great.
00:28Absolutely. So today we're really going to work with products and blow dryers to show how it is possible to
00:33change your part.
00:33So looking at Kate's hair, I want to figure out the best part placement.
00:37You really want to work off anywhere between center eyebrow to the corner of the eyebrow.
00:41How do you know which side is going to be the side for you?
00:43Honestly, you can change either way, but I'm looking at yours and I notice that when I take a right
00:48side part,
00:49you get a little more volume than I actually want for the look.
00:51It all depends on your personal hair type and texture. Just focus on the crown and get that nice and
00:56slick down.
00:57So I'm applying Peter Hans' styling glaze, which is just a very mild gel,
01:01and we're going to blow dry this into Kate's hair.
01:08You can choose a ponytail. You could do something that's slicked and all to one side.
01:12Alright, so I'm coming back in with a rat tail comb just to really sharpen up this part line.
01:17So now that we have the part placed and we've smoothed down this hair,
01:20it really becomes about choosing your ponytail placement.
01:22For Kate, I want to go with something low and in the center of the nape.
01:26So now that we have her ponytail right in place, I'm going to secure that with an elastic band.
01:30I want to take a small piece of hair from underneath, and I want to wrap that right around the
01:34elastic band
01:35and secure that with a bobby pin.
01:36So one of my favorite tips is to take hairspray and spray it directly onto your paddle brush.
01:41So we're just smoothing out this last bit. Are you ready to see yourself?
01:44I can't wait.
01:45Alright, well let's make this happen.
01:47Oh, it's great! It feels really sleek. It feels really natural.
01:50So your part really does lie down. You don't need to worry about fighting your natural part.
01:54It too can smooth down with a little product and a blow dryer.
