Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has sparked widespread controversy after declaring himself the country's “true president” following his election defeat to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The eldest son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro made the declaration shortly after arriving in Florida, triggering widespread mockery across social media and harsh criticism from Brazilian newspapers. Even members of his own political camp have distanced themselves from the statement, reaffirming that the election results must be respected. With Brazilian media branding his declaration a political embarrassment and allies questioning his leadership from abroad, the controversy raises serious questions about the future of Brazil's right-wing opposition and the Bolsonaro family's political influence.

00:20A stunning political declaration from Florida has turned into a major embarrassment for
00:27Brazil's Bolsonaro camp. Just days after losing Brazil's presidential election and leaving the
00:34country, Flavio Bolsonaro has declared himself Brazil's true president. And instead of rallying
00:42support, the statement has triggered widespread ridicule across social media. So what exactly
00:49happened? The 45-year-old senator, who is the eldest son of former Brazilian president Jair
00:56Bolsonaro, posted the declaration on social media on Wednesday, just hours after arriving
01:02in Florida. But the timing raised eyebrows. Flavio had lost Sunday's presidential runoff
01:09to left-wing incumbent Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, despite leading the first round of voting
01:15earlier this month. And after his election defeat, he left Brazil, traveling to the United States
01:22through Argentina and Ecuador. Then came the controversial social media post. Initially,
01:29Flavio described himself as Brazil's true president. But following the backlash, he changed the
01:35wording and referred to himself as the country's leader. That, however, did little to stop the
01:41online jokes. Brazilian pop star Anita joined the mockery, jokingly declaring herself free
01:48of cellulite. Other social media users took the opportunity to proclaim themselves the true
01:54president of Twitter, or even the winner of the next lottery. But the criticism was not limited to
02:00social media. Brazilian media outlets were particularly harsh. Newspaper O Globo reportedly likened Flavio to
02:08a lunatic asylum Napoleon, while Folia de Sao Paulo described the declaration as pathetic. Some publications
02:17also portrayed the statement as an attempt to undermine the democratic process. And perhaps
02:23more damaging for Flavio, even members of his own political camp began distancing themselves from the
02:29declaration. Sao Paulo governor Tarsicio de Freitas, a former minister under Jair Bolsonaro and a potential
02:37right-wing presidential contender, made his position clear. He said the election result was sovereign and
02:44reflected the will of the majority, which must be respected. He also described a possible presidential
02:50run in 2030 as a possibility. Flavio's campaign coordinator, Rogério Mourinho, also said there was no
02:59evidence of electoral fraud. Meanwhile, Brazil's electoral court chief, Casio Nunes Marques, issued a
03:07statement defending the security of the voting process.
03:10So, with political allies rejecting any suggestion of electoral wrongdoing, Flavio's declaration has
03:17raised another question. Is this really about claiming presidential legitimacy? Or is it an attempt
03:24to maintain political influence despite an election defeat? Political scientist Giraldo Montero believes the
03:31move was not simply a mistake, but a calculated attempt to retain influence over conservative supporters.
03:38However, he questioned whether Flavio could effectively lead Brazil's opposition while remaining outside the country.
03:46He also suggested the declaration could divide the conservative camp between those showing extreme
03:52loyalty and those unwilling to support another confrontation with democratic institutions.
03:59Meanwhile, the Bolsonaro family's political future remains under scrutiny. Flavio's father, Jair Bolsonaro,
04:06is serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest after being convicted over a plot to stage a coup following
04:14his 2022 election defeat. And on Thursday, Liberal Party leader Waldemar Castaneto visited the former president.
04:23For Flavio, the immediate fallout is clear. A statement apparently intended to project political authority has
04:30instead triggered ridicule, criticism from the media, and distance from important allies. And the bigger
04:37question now is whether he can turn this controversy into political influence, or whether declaring himself
04:44Brazil's leader from Florida will further weaken an already divided right-wing opposition.
