00:16what's good everybody welcome back to another edition of new york out game it's your boy
00:21dexter henry with my guy brian fonseca right here to the next to me brian five games have gone in
00:28the next season and guess what i got some news for you what's that the knicks have the same exact
00:35record as they did last year remember when people were about to jump off the ledge because they were
00:42oh and two and then oh and three and same place they were last year after five games although
00:47they did the reverse this year they were two and oh they were two and oh and then they lost
00:51three
00:51straight on the road they follow that up with a five game winning streak to their credit
00:58um sounds like what you're saying is it's a long season it's this there's still too much to go the
01:03main thing for every single team not to take this in too serious of a direction not to start
01:08the main thing is just being healthy at this point and whatever happens and we've seen a lot of
01:13injuries around nba the the the knicks have won jose alvarado dealing with an ankle injury which is
01:20not expected to be long term but throughout the league there reportedly there was 79 players on
01:27the injury report for wednesday's games october 28th which is i forget what percentage of the league
01:33but it was a it was a healthy percentage and basically that's two and a half per team or a
01:42little more than that if you're doing the math so that's this is crazy it's a it's a crazy amount
01:47and this is why look you want to be healthy it is a long run you can't go too crazy
01:54about things
01:55this season it's early it's early it is a long run but we got a lot to get to in
02:00this episode we have
02:00some things to talk about we're going to highlight some players we are also going to look ahead to the
02:05next schedule what they have coming up next including a fantastic interview that we're going
02:08to have with one of my fantastic good friends and good basketball writers that will be joining us but
02:13i want to start off just start by talking a little about what we've seen over the five games very
02:19small sample size and what we've seen from the knicks over the five games now look people were
02:23worried oh and three they lose to the magic on sunday but they bounce back this week with a win
02:28home
02:28against detroit and then back to back with your first back to back of the season they take it to
02:34shytown and have a fantastic comeback victory against the bulls where they kind of looked like the
02:38knicks we had seen before granted it is the bulls i'm not saying to read too much into that but
02:42the
02:42knicks came back in a game which they were down 19 and then won this one so how do you
02:47feel about
02:47them needing the comeback against chicago oh you shouldn't like that they need it we talked about
02:52this a couple of months ago right what do we say one of the keys was to the knicks having
02:57themselves
02:57a successful season and it was you know they can't play with their food you don't want to get into
03:02the habit of having to come back too much we understand it's part of their identity last year
03:06we understand you're the best you don't want that to be a habit you don't want it almost costing their
03:11season in the playoffs if you recall you don't you don't want it to be it it is something nice
03:16if
03:17you could reach back to and get you know dig deep and find it and you saw that last night
03:23yeah
03:23had a magnet ball in the second half watching that game but i do think i will say this i
03:29do think good
03:29things carried over from what we saw for two quarters against detroit okay into the second half that
03:37we saw against chicago they cleaned up the defense they were able to force some turnovers which the
03:42knicks can still do a better job of that forcing turnovers they haven't done a great job of that
03:45we'll crunch those numbers a little bit later but they also just hit shots they shot better you know
03:50it was about time it started happening their offense took a major jump yeah from where it was you know
03:55earlier in the week i had vinnie goodwill on and he told me after the orlando game we looked at
03:59the
03:59numbers they were 30th in offensive rating they've now moved up into the mid-teens so shows you what a
04:05couple of good games could do for you in a small sample size but and now and now they're now
04:09they're
04:09down to 20 which five games in yeah it could change it could change dramatically it could change
04:16dramatically we saw last year uh it changed dramatically after they saw the nets and they're
04:23going to see the nets coming up on monday yeah we'll get nets and bulls uh monday and wednesday that
04:29that may help your offensive rating a good amount yeah so overall and you know we'll touch more on this
04:34later overall i think if you're a knicks fan look would you like it to be flipped and they were
04:38three and two instead of two if you're a knicks fan you want a title like i'm really not trying
04:42to hear
04:42it honestly i'm like well some people out here will be like we're not trying to hear y'all yeah
04:47like
04:47no it's like i yeah just one it's not even halloween i mean like come on now we will talk
04:55about some of
04:56what we've seen obviously it's been a it's been a a very fast-paced nba season so far but i'm
05:03really not
05:04trying to hear too many of the complaints like we just did this we just did this for an entire
05:08year
05:08and look at what happened not that they're going to win the title again i don't i actually don't
05:11think they're going to go back to back because it's just way too difficult to do it but they can
05:15do it they're good enough to do it we had somebody in the comments who i replied to and i'm
05:19sorry i'm
05:20forgetting your name but i responded back to them because they were like i don't understand
05:24why dexter and he called me out doesn't understand that fans are bothered by this start and this was
05:29after they were oh and three and i was like because they played three percent of the season
05:34it's three percent of the season and then the person responded back to me and said oh well
05:39you know after their title winning years oklahoma city was this record some what he had a larger
05:46sample size he used like 25 and 4 or whatever and then boston was this record after 27 28 games
05:51and i was like yeah but what happened with those teams they didn't win the title you beat one of
05:58them in the playoffs right the next beat one of the playoffs i'm like so the point is your start
06:04doesn't matter as much as what you said my friend which is are you gonna be healthy and play your
06:10best basketball that's towards the end of the season that's the that's the secret to this is
06:13secret to the nba are you healthy and playing are you healthy and peaking in the spring that's it
06:18that's that's that's that's all this is this this is what you want to see it is a process
06:23mike brown has talked about adversity time and time again they're gonna have adversity
06:29do you like it that the adversity hit him early in the season well the adversity hit him last year
06:32early in the season and it's gonna hit you again and they're gonna find it's too long of a season
06:36that's why you can't go crazy you'll feel it again in december january you'll feel it again right
06:41before we get to like april like it's just gonna happen it's a long season there's 77 games i think
06:46what you have to trust is do you have the people in the makeup of your team that can overcome
06:51the
06:51adversity that's which they've shown that they have right so if you know that you have that and the
06:57knicks fans know that that is out there there isn't a real cause for worry yeah i'm personally
07:04not worried do i think they're playing their best basketball even right now no i think you've seen
07:08two good quarters against detroit and one and a half good quarters against chicago yeah is what i would
07:13say but last year we saw them play their best basketball in the spring so if they if they peak
07:18later and get healthy at that time that's all you really care about is that an excuse for like
07:23mikhail bridges averaging five points a game no no well speaking of that you know but speaking of
07:29that in the grand scheme of things that man saw 13 minutes against chicago mike brown who that was
07:36interesting i thought it was now will i say i'm concerned about that people no no did it raise my
07:45eyebrow i don't ever really raise my eyebrow but yes it did because i said huh but what i'll say
07:53is
07:53we've seen enough from mike brown to tell to know from everybody if you ain't got it he's gonna pull
07:58you damn that's what that's my takeaway from is mike brown doesn't care and he shouldn't he doesn't
08:02care how much you make he doesn't care if you're the star of the team where you play all the
08:06time or
08:06whatever he's like he he's comfortable enough especially post championship he's comfortable enough
08:11where and he basically said this like i i'll he said absolving the starting five but i think even
08:17including most of the starting five within reason he's like i'll just bench you i mean he sat cat for
08:23an extended period even when he was in foul trouble in that opening game when he didn't really have to
08:28sit up for as long as he did but he did it anyway like he just doesn't he doesn't care
08:33and i'm not
08:33saying it like in a bad way like no i doesn't care but he's like i have a title like
08:38i can i can
08:39coach how i want to coach right yeah exactly and he has i think he's done that before he's coach
08:43i
08:43want to coach but to your point he's that it's even freer yeah he's even more free yeah he's like
08:48who's gonna stop me now the pressure is legitimately off of him at this point right so you can coach
08:52freely and i think that would allow the team and the players to know you can play freely but there
08:56is with accountability and anybody knows me i'm a fan of accountability there's nothing yeah there's
09:02nothing wrong with that all right so the knicks are two and three after five games
09:05and as you said fans you should not panic at all whatsoever this is a the start is fine they've
09:14got some interesting games coming up we're gonna get to that later in this show but what we are going
09:19to do first tim kitzrow take us to our first segment who got game
09:27okay got a segment for you guys called this one who got game now in this segment what we're going
09:32to
09:32do is look at the player that defined the most recent stretch of basketball that we've seen the
09:37next place so for this the player who most defined this five game stretch that we just watched the
09:42knicks and brian and i talked about this before and sometimes we're going to have the same players
09:46sometimes we're going to have different players we'd like to sometimes have different players to
09:49discuss but i think for this five game stretch brian we both agreed there's one player to define this
09:54two and three stretch for the knicks and it is none other than carl anthony towns yeah carl anthony
10:01towns who was looking to get the bag and wants his money and has been very efficient offensively
10:06despite the turnovers has been efficient offensively we'll get to that but he's been
10:12really really good what has stood out to you about how he's been able to impact the knicks
10:17through this first five games there's a there's a carryover from the playoffs i'm noticing
10:24in just his confidence he he's really hunting that trailing three he loves that shit like we're
10:30watching him try to shoot this at different points every game he's been knocking them down so far he's
10:3541 from three on the same amount of attempts that you would expect right like four and a half per
10:41game
10:41he was at 4.1 last year 4.7 the year before the three-point attempt rate is similar uh
10:46per 36 minutes
10:47he's averaging five threes a game he was around five the last couple of years so on similar volume he's
10:52making 41 from three which is encouraging has not shot below 50 from the field in any game so far
10:58this year the main thing is he needs to clean up the turnovers but i still think defensively he's
11:04engaged that's carried over from the postseason it doesn't feel like where he was last year during
11:10the regular season where he was getting lost and things like that i actually think he's been he's
11:13been solid defensively so far and teams aren't hunting him in that same way so that's been a
11:20strength now offensively they all kind of need to get on the same page collectively but he's done his
11:25part i think better than anybody else on a consistent basis like jalen brunson's been rough
11:30shooting the ball he was better against chicago obviously but he's been rough shooting the ball
11:34until tally this year and kind of more inconsistent cat's been more steady so far he's rebounding
11:39really well he's been double digits every game has a 20 rebound game against the detroit pistons they
11:44didn't have jalen duran but still against the detroit pistons team who's very tough on the glass who
11:49actually boxes out actually competes for a lot of possessions um it's just the fouling and the
11:54turnovers that he needs to cut down but overall i think he's been he's been really good and they
11:59haven't leaned into the playmaking a ton uh probably because of the turnovers and fouling like we said
12:04five assists against chicago though yeah five against chicago the four against orlando we said last year
12:10like i think a point cat or or a point center cat if we want to call it that it's
12:16something that
12:16they'll lean into if he's not turning the ball over as much feels like it feels like that's mike brown's
12:22thing it's like if you're not fouling and if you're not turning over then we can do this more often
12:26so if he's able to cut those down we might see him get more five six assist games i'd agree
12:32with that
12:33again i think cat's been very efficient the one thing i think you look at this from being a complete
12:37positive on cat is like you said some of the fouls and then the turnover so i tried to look
12:41granted
12:42this is a small sample size i want to be also very clear and keep saying that again we were
12:46talking
12:46about five games but when you looked at last year just so you can understand where there may be
12:52concern and what you how do the numbers match up to what your eyes are seeing well cat's turnover
12:56percentage and this is according to cleaning the glass of sight that a lot of you know that i love
13:00here that takes out of garbage time stats turnover percentage was 14 last year brian that right now
13:0824.1 yeah okay where does that place him in the league just so you can understand that is in
13:14the
13:14ninth percentile not good yeah that's got to be cleaned up do i think cattle clean that up
13:19yeah our jared schwartz asked mike brown about that the other day after the detroit game where he had
13:25seven turnovers he you know mike brown talked about it how some of his little bit of communication
13:29cat not forcing passes guys actually being more intentional about when they're cutting to the
13:33basket so i think that's going to be huge too but the thing you mentioned that i thought was really
13:38good
13:38in what you said is and i just want to be clear when we talk about turnovers the assist numbers
13:43are
13:43moving in a positive direction granted a small sample size right assist percentage last year
13:48through the whole season 14.2 right now it's at 17.8 so you're starting to see it go up
13:53in the right
13:53way it's just that's the assist to usage ratio is up a little bit too from 0.57 to 0
13:59.70 you just
14:00want to see those turnovers go down and the assist percentage for the playoff run was about 24
14:04yes so i don't think it's going to get there because that's also probably not in the regular
14:09season yeah really high throughout the course of the regular season but if if it continues to trend
14:15upward that's just going to add another dimension to their offense that they're able to go lean on
14:19more consistently you talked about the rebounding and the knicks couple of things with the knicks
14:23when you look at them their offensive rebounding percentage through five games is actually higher
14:28than what it was last year which is interesting considering they do not have mitchell robinson
14:31anymore and part of that is cat cat has had a huge impact on that his offensive rebounding
14:36percentage is gone from 10.5 last year to 13.4 this season so if you're starting center who is
14:43mostly better known for being a strong defensive rebounder which he has been and is doing that in
14:48an elite level this season is really good because when you look at it last year to 10.5 just
14:53think
14:54of the jump and i'm not saying cat's going to stay at the 13.4 i expect some regression to
14:58the mean here
14:5966 percentile last year now in the 94th so he's elite in terms of offensive rebounding right now
15:05we know how good he is in terms of defensive rebounding but currently it's even better than
15:11it was last year 27.7 last year now 28.6 that's in the 97th percentile that's among bigs okay
15:17so he's
15:18doing an elite job in those i think the thing for me is also you talked about the shooting numbers
15:23he's really efficient with his minutes pretty much being the same okay and his usage pretty much being
15:29the same so you're getting a more efficient cat and you then wonder this is the thing people are
15:34to wonder he could even be more efficient which is scary if he cuts down on the turnovers and stays
15:38on the floor a little bit more with the fouls and i think that's the encouraging thing for me for
15:42cat
15:42because i agree with you there is a sense of confidence you're seeing with him how does he
15:47then build on that and clean up a couple of things and then do you really get an even better
15:51version of
15:52cat i think we don't think about this enough confidence is so big in everything you do it is huge
15:58in
15:58sports but what we talked about how last year before the playoffs cat needed to be unlocked
16:03but now we saw him unlocked in a way and come up in big time situations now you have to
16:09start
16:09wondering okay well what did that do from this year what does that do from going forward as he's trying
16:13to secure the bag for one last time i think he's off to a good start this season i just
16:17think he's
16:17got to clean up a few things i don't i don't think he's bad and i think that's why for
16:21me he was a
16:21player to define this five game stretch yeah it's going to be hard to sustain some of the
16:26efficiency because like the field goal percentage is outrageous 53 58.3 he's never been higher than
16:3154 of the three-point percentage i mean he shot 40 in two of his last three seasons leading into
16:37this year like that's actually not something that's outrageous to maintain the rebounding
16:41percentage will be the best of his career although his best two rebounding percentage years were the
16:47last two seasons so since he's gone to the knicks he's become a better rebounder by the numbers
16:53in terms of percentage not just the raw numbers although last year was not a career high in terms
16:58of the raw numbers but you also got to factor in that he averaged 31 minutes a game which is
17:03the
17:03fewest that he's had to average in his career to this point so he's rebounding the ball really well too
17:08we'll see at what level he can maintain uh the scoring but right now um he he's playing really well
17:16just really needs to clean up the turnovers and the fouls but i think overall he's been their best
17:20player so far yeah i i think so i think there was a you could talk about the impact if
17:25you look at
17:26some numbers it'll talk tell you about what the impact josh hart is having who quietly has been
17:30really impacting the team with his on and off numbers yeah but low-key clarkson too clarkson actually
17:36the best on off on the team so far we will we will we will get to that man just
17:41a little bit later
17:42you know he's he's been really good too um we'll talk about in the next segment but i think if
17:47you're
17:47looking at cat and you're hoping he can build on this and i think he's showing the knicks
17:52yeah he's right he's financially motivated man that's that's that's that's just a real you talk
17:58about confidence and motivations and all this some of this could just be look i really want my money
18:04and i know what i asked for i know what i was offered i know what i'm worth and i'm
18:10going to play
18:10for it and listen if that's if that will get if that's what gets you to have your best career
18:17season to this point that's a lot of people it's a lot of people to have their best career season
18:21you
18:21know what i mean we've seen that happen in sports and in anything really time and time again if you're
18:26at your job and you know that you could be competing for a raise in three to six months you
18:33might have your best three to six months stretch like this is kind of how that works yeah look
18:37small sample size cats off to a good start some things you can still get better at but
18:41i think if you are a fan of carl d towns you wanted to see him start the season strong
18:46well
18:47you've seen it here game recognize game
18:53all right time for game recognizes game we're going to try to recognize
18:57a player who i would call you know brian an unsung hero a brian fonseca all-star you know
19:03with me and brian for a long time you understand exactly what that means a brian fonseca
19:07all-star so you know somebody who maybe doesn't get the shine in the play that you know plays or
19:14the
19:14wins that you've seen right might show you a skill that you might not recognize in the game a really
19:21good play so we want to give some shine to the folks that maybe don't get the spotlight unsung
19:25heroes unsung heroes there we go or as i like to say a brian fonseca all-star these folks need
19:31and
19:31deserve recognition as well too so the knicks i think this week was interesting because i think the
19:36knicks could have had a couple of people that you could have looked at for this and i initially had
19:41a player who was a starter and then i decided to switch and say no i'm not i'm not going
19:46there i'm
19:46going to go with a different that means you had you had josh hart i did have josh hart and
19:50i decided
19:51to not go with josh hart and who's done some really good things and there was some there was a
19:55good
19:56argument for me doing but there was a player for me that showed out in the bulls game that i
20:00really
20:00liked and then you also had a player so as your unsung hero for this game recognized game segment
20:05and what we're going to do is we'll look at the film we're actually going to look so it's like
20:10a
20:10mini film breakdown for the people here we're going to look at some of the film that we have
20:13and we are going to look at some of the players these two players and how they had an impact
20:20in
20:21games the plays that worked for them so we're going to bring up that film right now and we're going
20:25to take a look at these players and just show you the plays that really worked for them so it's
20:31a lot
20:32you can look at in this and there's things you're going to be able to see and so brian just
20:36to get
20:36it started your player was landry shammy uh who's had himself a pretty good game and has played
20:42very well um there so yeah what do you have for landry shammy that you liked for landry shammy it's
20:50it's
20:50a combination of things when he's playing really well it's three-point shooting and it's a defense
20:56it's also how he's getting three-point shots the relocation threes and being able to just have other
21:03guys play off of him too because there is a gravity that he brings because of how good he is
21:08as a
21:08shooter um and he understands like where to be when his teammates get an offensive rebound where to
21:13be in transition where to be i mean even in a half court set like he understands his role more
21:19than
21:19just about anybody else on the team so it's really just it's a shooting combined with knowing his
21:25role on defense uh there were times last year where he looked better defensively than mikhail bridges
21:29uh according to people internally as stefan bondi uh let us know because i mean frankly he was
21:36defending at the point of attack better right like that's something that he can do really well
21:40uh you could also put him on a shooter like he he's he's pretty versatile with you know respect to
21:45how he can guard guards uh in that way but he's also a guy that is a good connector and
21:51you can
21:51play him with a lot of different lineups and lineup combinations and things of that nature and he's i
21:56think he's done that well uh start the season but more so these last couple of games or so yeah
22:00and i
22:01think that's definitely why you've seen coach brown have such a love for him and the ability to mix and
22:06match and and put him put him into different situations um there so yeah let's go to the video let's
22:12let's show what we've seen in the video from landry shaman and how well he has been able to play
22:18uh thus far this season um you'll see it in both all the clips that we have here from the
22:22chicago game
22:23and so when you look at the chicago game landry shaman uh in this first play there we're going to
22:28see
22:28this is going to be a lot of people going to look at landry shaman and what he could do
22:31in terms of
22:32shooting the three but landry shaman has shown us already he can impact the game without just
22:38shooting the three and his movement without the ball is really important for the knicks so let's take
22:42a look right here at this first play from the game in chicago with the next one in that comeback
22:48there good screen by cat watch this so look at shaman moving without the ball already
22:56like actually we should go to the start of this and this is a big part of it right
23:00he's moving without the ball because he's somebody who doesn't need it so here's mikhail
23:04bridges going through the lane as cat sets the screen here's shaman
23:09okay i'm gonna hang out in the dunker spot shaman in a dunker spot which you're not gonna see a
23:14ton
23:14but look no but i kind of like the look because that also throws the defense off they're thinking
23:18they could ignore him here they don't have to that's not usually the kind of guy you worry about
23:22the dunker spot and the type of guy that you really want to worry about here is well it's twofold
23:28it's actually cat in the middle of the lane so caleb wilson's there and josh giddy's there and then you
23:33have og in the corner yep this is og's three-point shot so okay cool cat has a decision to
23:39make the
23:40decision would normally be just hit og right here but he's like yo i got landry shaman in the dunker
23:46and watch cat's eyes he's looking towards the rim and looks that off and josh giddy's like oh shit
23:53if you're watching this it's too late yeah he's like oh well shaman recognized that play really well
24:00and he's like i could just stay right here i don't think a lot of people would have said hey
24:04he
24:04could i didn't think that was happening i was shocked when i watched the guy i was like oh
24:08didn't didn't see them uh throwing it down dunking off the vert you know why october if this if this
24:15were april you know this might be a layup i don't know andrew shaman uh could let us know but
24:20uh it is a great great play design but also just great execution here execution is obviously like a
24:26word that you really lean on during the season in particular this is important but like look
24:31miscommunication here josh giddy knows look at josh giddy's body language he's like damn we let that
24:36one go norman powell's in the vicinity too but he has to worry about mikhail bridges i mean i don't
24:40know if he does give him the start that mikhail's had to the season but nonetheless this is a great
24:44great play here yeah just shows you how shaman can impact the game and then we'll see another play
24:48here so he can move on doesn't have to just be threes although we're going to see a three-point
24:52shot right here but you see how valuable he is his team moving the ball here's your other play
24:57brian what'd you like here yeah tyler kolek has had a very good passing season so far um stepping
25:03into a backup point guard role for jose alvarado who's injured um suspicious timing given uh potential
25:09what are you saying what are you trying to say it's just i don't know it feels like an early
25:15showcase
25:16for tyler kolek i'm not accusing anybody of anything nefarious on this particular front okay
25:22uh we have tyler kolek here with the ball landry shaman pay attention to him he's going to be over
25:27here in the corner here's a pass i mean that's a dime first of all this is a great pass
25:34because
25:35you think the entries come in the cat and then kolek right here this is just perfect
25:42spacing that's too late for a shooter like shaman boom norman powell did his best but this is really
25:50about shaman knowing where to be because some guys might just stay in the corner here that's
25:55not going to help a lot because you need the spacing right you doesn't help the spacing and
25:59you need kolek the ball handler to be able to see you and he trusts that yeah kolek could potentially
26:04make this pass if needed so kolek going up here to the wing is important because now he could see
26:09the entire floor and if he wants to throw the entry to cat anyway he has the space to do
26:13it you're not
26:14going to throw that from the corner because it's going to be too tight and then shaman just pops up
26:17a
26:17little bit here just ever ever so slight with the movement just slight movement and now this is the
26:23look he has essentially eyes on the rim powell is coming from out of the paint so this is too
26:28late
26:28so that's just great it's simple it's very simple but like these are the margins you have to work
26:32with in the nba because everyone's so fast so athletic um and and the pace is just out of control
26:38now we're like i think zach lowe said the slowest team today would be the fastest team in 2010
26:44but like these are the kinds of things in a split second that make the difference no and
26:48landry shaman is a fantastic player at being able to react to to all that in this now my player
26:54that
26:55i chose to watch and it's funny because there will be an impact with landry shaman in this
26:59was jordan clarkson jordan clarkson was tremendous against the bulls 18 minutes the man is 17 points
27:06two steals which we're going to see both vintage jordan clarkson three rebounds except it's it's
27:12vintage because it doesn't from a production standpoint yes because it does not look the same
27:17does not look the same my guy it doesn't look we've talked about he's he's got rid of the three
27:23point shot for the most part although he made a couple uh and he's he's reinvented himself into
27:27being a very like very good defender at times that's the thing for me he's coming into these
27:35games he's a 10th man he does not know whether he's going to play or not on some nights it
27:40is
27:40limited this man has only played 33 minutes a season most most of them in this game yeah
27:45over half of them came in this game and this man you don't got to get ready if you stay
27:49ready
27:50and this man stays ready okay it's a small sample size of what i'm gonna say but brian alluded to
27:56this earlier he leads the team in on off numbers the knicks net rating this corner cleaning glasses
28:05taking out the garbage time numbers 46.6 points for 100 possessions better with clarkson on the floor
28:12yeah then off it now again only across 32 minutes that is a very very very very very small sample
28:17size but the point being you saw what he could do when he came into this game and for me
28:22it was how
28:22he filled space it was how he even impacted the team defensively and then turned it into offense so
28:28we're gonna watch it here on this first play how he was able to turn defense into offense you see
28:33landry shammott guarding normal pal you see jordan clarkson in the corner on caleb wilson and watch
28:41clarkson how he is able to immediately keep his eyes on the ball remember those the hardest thing
28:45clyde always says is watch the ball watch your man clarkson's doing this let's let it run
28:51and so shammott was able to take away the space right so you got to credit shammott on this too
28:57defending without fouling defended without fouling normal pal was not ready
29:01shammott also was trying to trying to draw an offensive foul which he could have been could
29:05have done there too and that could have been offensive foul he did he did clip him he actually
29:09didn't catch him in the jaw definitely caught him there that's an uppercut that's an uppercut
29:13shammott's a strong strong guy so he took it but here's clarkson ready with the steal but now it's
29:17about okay when you get the ball can the knicks get easy baskets right you have numbers push you've
29:22got numbers this is technically a four on two clarkson gives it up makes the right pass right to your
29:28point guard and shammott who's amazing at relocating anybody he just took one to the chin
29:35and didn't fall on the floor like 99 of nba players do right is brian called some people soft
29:41i'm not saying that yeah and then he relocates to the corner so you just see the impact of what
29:47jordan clarkson was able to do getting the steal and it led to a fast break opportunity which was a
29:53huge run for the knicks as you see the scores at 109 in this game and that gave the knicks
29:58the lead
29:59so huge play by clarkson there now this is an end of just this clip this continues because on the
30:05ensuing possession clarkson makes another play right here at least keep going yes clarkson's right here
30:11keep an eye on clarkson just let let let it roll that cookies right there clark that that's twice in
30:18a
30:18row and then is able to finish and score on the other end that is a guy knowing his impact
30:24and
30:24locked in back-to-back steals look think about that that's two possessions for the bulls in the fourth
30:30quarter in the fourth quarter almost halfway through just almost six minutes to go where the it's a tie
30:36game and you have a five-point swing that is caused by one man his only two steals of the
30:41game
30:42came right here there were two huge steals that helped the knicks build a cushion and this is not
30:48what anybody would have thought of jordan clarkson yeah i'll even say three years ago yeah nobody was
30:52thinking about this before he signed with the knicks two years ago i mean like you know how when
30:57you when you watch a when you watch a football game and then you have usually somebody who's a
31:02defensive player will just say like jonathan vilma he'll be in the booth and then he'll break down
31:06an interception and he'll always tell you pay attention to the eyes because the defensive back is
31:11looking at the quarterback's eyes and the quarterback is like just looking and then they go for the
31:15number one target clarkson here is staring down trey jones the entire time like the whole time
31:22he's like watch all right i got caleb now trey jones is here like not even a half court yet
31:29and jordan clarkson's like whoop okay he knows he's gonna make this pass yeah because to set up the
31:34offense we got to go to the middle of the floor so clarkson's still right here this is when he
31:41makes
31:41his decision yep that's that that's as soon as he makes the dribble with the left hand and he
31:45looks over clarkson knows yep i know what's coming he's like yeah i'm going forward i'm going i'm going
31:50for it and this is high enough where like if the gamble doesn't pay off for whatever reason then okay
31:55you can recover and get back but this pays off and and and you see trey jones
32:04like as soon as it left his hand yeah yeah as soon as you can see the little you see
32:08his teeth a
32:08little bit you see it's like oh shit he sees clarkson and then boom we can't see his eyes got
32:15big yeah darrell revis and it's a good finish right there for clarkson so there you go two unsung heroes
32:23for the knicks jordan clarkson landry shamick getting it done there and so that's going to do it for this
32:30portion with the film but you like what you saw from those two guys and so when you're looking at
32:35these guys in game recognized game you got to recognize what these guys are doing because this
32:39is part of winning this is the little contributions i want to call them little because they're big
32:43that can help turn things around for the knicks and i think some of the veteran role players have
32:47been huge in the knicks just being better in the last couple of games and now we're going to see
32:54if
32:54the knicks can be better with who they've got coming up next they've got an interesting stretch of
32:58games coming up next we're going to talk about that now who got next
33:06all right everybody so now we're going to look ahead to what the knicks have next and i've mentioned
33:10this before they have a very interesting stretch coming up but the nba cup starts which brian and
33:14i we both love we love the nba cup this is sure that starts on friday night the knicks are
33:18going to
33:18be down the turnpike in philly for the second meeting between the sixers and knicks sixers taking the
33:24first game on opening night and now we're going to preview a little nick sixers and we're going to
33:29do it with my guy he you see him is a huge part of the locked on sixers podcast he
33:35also covers the
33:36sixers for the sporting news and you also got to mention he is an alum of the best university in
33:41the world the university of pittsburgh it's my guy the big bro keith pompey keith what's going on man
33:48what's up fellas how y'all doing i'm good man i don't think i knew the pit thing oh you
33:52didn't know
33:52the pit thing i didn't think i knew that you you have never been on a podcast surrounded by this
33:57much pit excellence in your life maybe except for you and jamoke yeah that's about it yeah yeah yeah
34:02come on it's all it's always held to pit with me keith we we know that keith it's always held
34:07to pit
34:07keith i'm glad we just hope our football team can get some more victory but we good all right i
34:12i
34:13need to go i don't even talk about that in basketball basketball season's coming keith i don't even
34:16want to talk about that either so that's it keith let me ask you this um because the sixers won
34:22that
34:22first meeting at the garden and you've seen more of this group together the sixers now coming to
34:26this one they're four and one what have you learned about the sixers team that you didn't know on
34:31opening night that you know think they may have grown a little bit since then and what do you think
34:34the knicks should be better prepared for with the sixers team than they were last week you know that's
34:40an extremely uh great question because you know the thing that i learned is that um defensively
34:49um they're pretty good like like i feel like in that fourth quarter they did certain things where
34:55they got in certain matchups where you know they had lebron james covering call anthony towns right
35:01like in the past let's keep it real caught captain them would take uh what would expose joel they would
35:07get them in space and expose them and i feel like the one thing that the sixers did is that
35:12are a
35:12completely different team you know you got jaylen brown who was who was guarding um brunson you know
35:20he used his length so what the sixers do is they get a lot of hands on the ball um
35:26they they try to
35:28use their defense to to get them in the transition basket the other way so that's the one thing now
35:35offensively the sixers are still one of those teams where i'm still trying to figure them out right
35:42um you know there are certain times where you have you know maxi like maxi will start things out
35:48and then all of a sudden joellen b will get his touches and do things and then it's like jaylen
35:53brown but you know it just seems like they always go into a lull right but they've been able to
36:00overcome it and um you know i think that this is going to be a little bit of a different
36:05animal
36:06because i think it you know we all know it's a rivalry and i think the knicks maybe look at
36:11it like
36:11yo we got out to a slow start and this is a game that we go out and prove that
36:16we are the defending
36:17champs and we're trying to contend for another one so i'm really intrigued to see what the sixers are
36:23going to do on the offensive end so one of the things i'm intrigued about keith we're talking
36:28about this a little bit before we started recording but uh do you think the knicks fans are going to
36:32take over the sixers trap again like we saw in the playoffs you think the knicks are going to fans
36:36are going to come in there and uh take over the wells fargo center i was down there a couple
36:40weeks ago
36:40for the preseason opener i mean the knicks fans invaded that building is that going to happen again
36:45you know what and the crazy part about it let's just say if lebron james wasn't here right
36:50and the ticket prices didn't go up to the way they they are now i would say yes now the
36:57only thing is
36:58it's kind of like i think the fact that everyone is bored in and everyone is hungry for a championship
37:05you would assume that there's going to be some knicks fans but it's not going to be like a home
37:11game or madison square garden south as it has been like the last two years or last three years
37:18so i think we're going to see some knicks fans but i'm telling you i don't think it's going to
37:23be
37:23the uh the takeover that it was the previous season and if it is that's a bad sign for the
37:30sixers
37:30because you mean to tell me like you got lebron james and you got all this hype
37:36and new york fans still chanting let's go knicks like you know what i mean dude i'm just going to
37:42tell you all this and i'm sorry for being right but it got to a point the knicks fans got
37:47so loud
37:48that they had to start blaring up the music right so you couldn't hear the knicks fans and then it
37:55got
37:55to a point they start doing that all the time and i'm like why did the knicks fans do that
38:00this music
38:00is getting on my nerves man i want to watch the game i'm tired of hearing i'm tired of hearing
38:06the philly anthem theme songs over and over and over again i mean i mean new york likes some of
38:11those joints like if it was freeway like a lot of new yorkers are going to know those lyrics too
38:17hey but when you're in there trying to cover a game you're not trying to hear it that loud
38:24it's kind of crazy because sometimes it's kind of like you want to just they wanted to like tune
38:29it out like so people on television could hear him like yo they can still hear the knicks fans
38:34the people and so the stadium is in south philly i'm like the people in northeast philly
38:41you can't drown them out man i i it's going to be interesting to see that's what and it's a
38:46cup
38:46it's a cup game so it's going to be interesting to see uh one more thing i had to ask
38:49because you
38:50talked about the offense keith and you talked about how you were impressed with how they look
38:54defensively but offensively when i watched the game the other night against the pacers
38:59tyrese maxi he was clearly the closer he brought it home yeah for the sixers down the stretch
39:05is that the known hierarchy in terms of who's going to close here with the sixers right now are
39:10they still figuring out like is this is this maxi's the ball is in his hands when he needs to
39:15close the
39:15game down the stretch or are the sixers still trying to figure it out will it be a little bit
39:18of him
39:19jalen brown what's the deal in terms of who's closing games for the sixers i think it's going
39:24to be i think it's going to be basically whoever the hot hand is right but i will say this
39:32it was
39:32it was a lot of high iq basketball and a lot of unselfish basketball um yesterday in indiana
39:39because what happened is they saw realized that maxi was on and lebron and jalen kept telling him
39:46bro keep shooting keep shooting i mean lebron only had one shot attempt in the fourth quarter
39:52and the same thing for jalen and you know they were just like trying to get them open setting screens
39:58doing whatever they could for him to to to get hot so i feel like you know right now is
40:04the one thing
40:05i will say about them that a lot of people were wondering if the eagles will come into play and
40:11they
40:11seem to set those things aside and i think they really want to win right i mean i know they
40:17really
40:17want to win so with that being said i feel like you know let's say if jalen is hot and
40:23then they're
40:23like jalen we're going to ride you you know if mb is hot like the one game against uh they
40:30lost to
40:30detroit but mb was playing well and they were going to him a lot in that one particular game so
40:37i feel like well not detroit excuse me milwaukee because um he played in the milwaukee game they
40:42won that one and they were going down to him down in the stretch so i feel like it's just
40:47a matter of
40:47who the hot hand is on any given night we talked about the rivalry a little bit keith already but
40:55i
40:55wanted to ask you does is this the most that it's felt like a true rivalry because we've had different
41:01points and up until recently the knicks were bad for a long time and then the knicks and sixers were
41:06bad at the same time or one team was good one team wasn't but this feels like the first period
41:11of now
41:11multiple years where both teams are in contention so is this the most that it's felt like a rivalry
41:16since i don't know in in how long i guess you are correct because i always felt like you know
41:24everybody talks about the sixers and the boston celtics but i always felt like the the i mean that
41:30is a rivalry but i always felt like that always took away from the sixers and knicks rivalry
41:34and but i i do think the last couple years you know because let's keep it 100 you know philly
41:41has
41:41a reputation i grew up here and we got a reputation of being a tough blue collar gritty fan base
41:49right
41:49you know everybody talks about the boo and the santa claus and this and that but when the knicks fans
41:54came in here several a couple years ago we're not talking about last year we're talking about two
41:59years before that and when they took over the city it was like they embarrassed philly and i think that
42:06right then and there in itself kind of elevated the rivalry especially since you got three guys from
42:13villanova you know you know your front office is from sound um you know from south jersey so with all
42:20that i think yes it did ignite the rivalry a lot and like teams do the knicks win the championship
42:27what do the sixers do they make major upgrades you got to keep up with the knicks so yeah you
42:34are right
42:34the last couple years i feel like it's went on to a new height and um you know these teams
42:41really hate
42:42each other yeah they really hate each other okay yeah i mean tell us a little bit more about that
42:48and and are you and because i i know we're seeing it from the fan bases because the when we
42:54do shows
42:55sixers fans will come and and talk in the chat whether it be to us or other commenters or what
43:01have
43:01you but like we see it from a fan's perspective but can you tell us about like from a from
43:06a competitive
43:06standpoint from a player standpoint from an organizational standpoint like where are we with this rivalry
43:12yeah and when i say hate each other i'm saying like that tongue-in-cheek like because you know
43:16when you see brunson and maxi we all know that they like each other right they're cool guys you know
43:22you look at brunson you you look at uh car anthony town they're eagles fans right so you know but
43:28i do
43:29feel like there is when they get on that floor is a sense of you gotta beat this other team
43:37like you
43:37cannot lose to them it's like straight up bragging rights and the fact that you know brunson and and
43:44and um josh hart um and and bridges played at villanova it's one of those things where you know
43:51it's like yo we had success in this building we know that people are know who we are we're going
43:56to
43:56show out whenever we play him and the same thing like mb when he goes to new york he cherishes
44:02the
44:02booze like he wants to make people look you know regret booing them so yeah i i think that it
44:10is a
44:10heated rivalry and the players know it they all nowadays it's not like back in the 80s and the 90s
44:16um where they hated each other literally but i think that it's one of those things where it's all
44:22about bragging rights and you have to you you have to win you have to win when you play each
44:27other see
44:28see dex this is why uh tyrese maxey uh hit the pads with boots ennis this summer he was getting
44:33ready he's getting his mind ready i'm not even mad at that when when you look at this matchup keep
44:39um on friday i think one of the things i look at is rebounding you know you talked about the
44:44bigs
44:44you talked about towns and and bead um here the thing about philly and i i was a little shocked
44:50at
44:50this when i looked at the data although my eyes told me this in some of the games i've watched
44:53with
44:53them they've been out rebounded in all five of their games um so controlling the glass is an issue
45:00if you want to say early for the sixers despite them being four and one um how much of the
45:05issues
45:06are you seeing with them about who's been available and who's not because we know and be it's not always
45:11available and then some of it is just the lack of center depth which philly has or just the fact
45:18that there's going to be tough matchups like cat where it's going to be hard for them to handle
45:21what's what's wrong with the sixers in terms of being able to rebound the ball and how much you
45:25think that'll be a factor in the game on friday night yeah i think it's going to be a major
45:30factor
45:30in the game on friday night um here's the thing a lot of it you can look at it and
45:37you can say
45:37center depth but i also feel like it's the roster construction right um when we look at the 76ers
45:45um you know ariel her party is hurt you know he was the third string center there but they were
45:52looking for him to be a guy who could back up joel and bead and start on the nights that
45:58he's not
45:59playing well the other center that they have on the roster is a dem boner now a dem boner is
46:06listed at
46:076 10 but he's actually 6 8 yeah right so you look so when you talk about dean wade you
46:15know dean
46:16wade is 6 10 and you know we all know that he played with cleveland last year but you know
46:22he was
46:22like a slash what they call a 3 4 like a guy who starts out playing the three but then
46:28he can play the
46:29four as well you know his game is shooting threes and and and defending like he's not a rebounder
46:37and and then so then you have lebron james you know and lebron it's like he wants to be a
46:44facilitator he gets out and go he does a lot of things so i feel like it's all about roster
46:50construction now you know the thing is some people might say well we got taco fall but come on we
46:56all
46:57know that taco fall is more of a guy who's a development player that you know you're trying
47:02to see what you can get out of he's going to be a two-way player then they have a
47:06couple a guy by
47:06the name of don barlow who hasn't played yet but i don't know if everything was equal if he was
47:13healthy and everything was equal how many minutes he would get in the game you know what i mean so
47:18i feel like the 76ers right now with a party going down and y'all know him more than i
47:25do what he can
47:26do and what he can't do right but with him going down it kind of like left a huge hole
47:32in there in
47:33regards to what they think they can do rebounding because of the players that they have that's just
47:38not their skill set and unfortunately for the sixers you know they've been able to win games but
47:44it's been noticeable like how they've been getting destroyed with second chance points and things like
47:50that i expect josh hart you know he's not big but i expect him to have a big game in
47:55regards to
47:56rebounding tomorrow yeah the knicks have been actually rebounding the ball well i guess the
48:00last thing for me here keith um when you look at this sixers team because this has been the big
48:06question for everybody here in new york and probably throughout the nba are the sixers the biggest
48:12threat to the knicks in the east in your eye i'm just curious for you as somebody who covers the
48:16team
48:17if you look at them as the biggest threat to the knicks and the team that can actually
48:20knock the knicks off the top of their throne
48:25you know what when i did do my when i like somebody asked me to give my prediction and and
48:31i did a
48:31prediction and i said the knicks was going back to the championship but i had them defeating the
48:36sixers in the eastern conference right um but right about now and um i look at the detroit pistons right
48:43i feel like detroit is a pretty good team there you know we all thought that they were going to
48:49take a
48:49step back it's still early but they look like a team that you know in the past i know you
48:55know
48:56they lost the last game but in the past they matched up extremely well and against detroit i
49:03mean against the knicks they also match up extremely well against the sixers right but i think the the
49:10big problem that we have with the sixers and we talk about the knicks you know the knicks have a
49:15lot
49:15of continuity right more so than anyone they won the championship i feel like right now they have
49:21to get over that championship bug so to speak but when you look at the sixers there are questions as
49:26good as they are how many games is joellen b going to be available right and then lebron james
49:33you know is how how is he going to do over time because father time is a is a is
49:40amazing thing like
49:41or a difficult thing for people he's 41 he's going to be 42 so to me those two guys is
49:49they have a lot
49:51of question marks right now health and age and then we talk about the backup center if they don't go
49:58in
49:58there and get somebody who is really going to help them i don't think that they're going to be the
50:04second best team or or the team that's going to give the knicks the biggest trouble right i think it's
50:09going to probably be detroit right but if they're healthy yeah they will but i still think that when
50:17we talk about continuity um we talk about uh matchups and we talk about having the right pieces
50:24i still believe that the knicks are going to come out of the east all right there you go you
50:29heard
50:30it from my guy keith pompey pit legend himself doing a fantastic job with the locks on locked on
50:36sixers podcast and sporting news you can check them out there keith uh i will see you soon my brother
50:41we will see you soon appreciate you joining me and brian here in new york got game yeah thanks for
50:46having me on fellas thanks for having me on anytime anytime man hail the pit hail the pit
50:52all right well the knicks they've got themselves an interesting schedule they got the nba cup game
50:56coming up on friday as you mentioned just talking about that with keith pompey then they've got the
51:01nets at home on monday followed by the bulls they'll see them again at home next wednesday and then
51:06they travel to cleveland where they'll see the calves for the first time so interesting stretch for the
51:12next coming up they could get right there's some decent competition in there they could have some get
51:17right games in there as well too what are you looking to see from them over these next couple
51:20games it's it's really the the offense while it did elevate against chicago like i just want to
51:28see it against better teams and sort of how it looks uh the defense has actually been good so far
51:33i'll say that much but the offense is where i'm like okay can they get to a place where it's
51:37a little
51:38steadier can they get to a place where you know they're actually taking advantage of the shot quality
51:42that they're getting um slow starts did not leave them in last season like we're still seeing that
51:48although they haven't been the exact same fourth quarter team yet so just a little bit more
51:52consistency on the offensive end is what i'm looking for and the continued rotations like to see if
51:58jordan clarkson is going to continue to get these opportunities and as of right now he should
52:01um and see like what tyler cola can continue to bring at the backup point guard spot for the time
52:07being
52:08because i don't know if you saw but pacom dottier's uh option as predicted as we've been telling you
52:15uh has been declined so he will officially be a free agent after this year so it does feel like
52:20the knicks are potentially gearing up some things and you know gearing up to do some things and
52:25minutes wise you know like we've seen mikhail bridges take a hit we've seen andre drummond's
52:28minutes sort of yeah dor hasn't really played dottier i think that i think it's over um and and
52:36and andre drummond you know like the minutes have kind of been up and down we'll say
52:43it's been up and down and the play's been up and down so i'm curious to see how mike brown's
52:47gonna
52:48tinker with that moving forward definitely things i'm watching for the next week hopefully by the
52:52next time we are recording we'll have obviously a couple more games on the belt another three games
52:55or so so we'll have a little bit more of a sample size i do agree with you brian the
52:59defense has been
53:00good when you look at the numbers for cleaning the glass they're 11th in terms of defensive rating
53:04110.4 points allowed per 100 possessions and an offense getting better after the bulls game
53:09is 16th right now according to cleaning the glass at 111.4 per 100 per session so remember that's
53:15taking out the garbage time so we'll see how the next trend i think those are some things to
53:20definitely watch over the next couple of games how's the offense look how's the defense look
53:25to brian's point how they look against quality competition or expected quality competition
53:30and that starts with philly on friday nba cup group b is a slaughterhouse is what i'll call it
53:36it's a group of death it's going to be a killer the knicks are going to be a very interesting
53:41see
53:41if they can come out that again they are the defending nba cup champions we'll see what they're
53:45able to do that's going to do it for this edition of new york got games special thanks to our
53:50guest
