The Rift Between Us is a talking heads documentary featuring Nozizwe Dube, Marie-Fidèle Dusingize and Betel Mabille, exploring the impact of misogynoir on romantic relationships between Black women and Black men in Belgium. At the intersection of sexism and anti-Black racism, the film asks how colonial legacies continue to shape the ways we see ourselves, each other, and the relationships we build.

00:26There is this consensus
00:28that everyone gets fed who is desirable and who is not.
00:33And there are systems that work to enforce that.
00:37Desirability, politics, colorism.
00:39These are things that we as people have created,
00:42and they don't have to be that way.
00:44The sexism does not materialize in a similar way for all women.
00:50We realize when we think about feminism
00:52that the way we've explained the issues of women
00:55is to crystallize a lot of women blanches.
00:59A concept that is not really discussed or discussed.
01:03In the meantime, it is difficult to have conceptual elements
01:06to talk about oneself
01:06when these issues that it is addressed
01:08are completely linked by the state.
01:11The black women are treated in a very specific way.
01:17And in fact, these are stereotypes
01:18that are intimately linked to the colonial history of the Occident.
01:22We love who we love.
01:23Everyone has their tastes and their preferences, etc.
01:26This is an extremely individualist vision.
01:29If we were in a society that was built
01:32I don't know, I don't know,
01:37this discussion that we have now.
01:40In fact, it's the combination of all the violence
01:42that makes when you grow as a white person
01:44in a Western society,
01:46it's hard to be in a position of love for yourself.
01:50Even in places that seem innocent,
01:52like the love scene,
01:54are completely contaminated by this colonial reality and racist.
01:58I do think that there are seeds for a romantic rift.
02:01Quite a lot of people have those stories
02:03of this comparison being done between me
02:05and maybe lighter skinned black women
02:07making it clear that I am undesirable.
02:11For Black Zones, it's more valuable socially
02:14to not be with a Black Zones,
02:16since Black Zones are the social group
02:18considered as the lowest.
02:20In the end, we have two groups
02:21who suffer all of them.
02:23Their relationships with others
02:24and their social and sexual constructs
02:27are not really able to connect themselves.
02:36What message would you like to transmit
02:39to Black Zones first?
02:41Ah, to Black Zones first.
02:43To Black Zones?
02:44Ah yes.
02:46Ah yes.
02:46They also make part of combat.
02:48To Black Zones.
02:51That's so difficult.
02:52Hmm.
02:54Um.
02:55...
02:56...
