00:00uh i didn't realize did you see wilbon i guess stepping away i did see that i did see that
00:05today
00:05i guess it's all health related though it's not like he's retiring or anything although
00:10no i mean he's i saw that he's 67 i think so that that's you know getting getting toward the
00:18point
00:18of at least consideration i would think in this industry uh you know it really you you tend like
00:25like football players and baseball players basketball players broadcasters i guess
00:28many of them you have to like they say you have to tear the jersey off the player you have
00:32to take
00:33the microphone away usually from from uh from the broadcaster but those guys uh i he's he is he said
00:40it's not it so you know obviously we'll take his word for it he said he just has to get
00:44healthy but
00:45if not and and this is it he decides to go away then you're not just looking at a great
00:51journalist
00:51you're looking at somebody who really created what we're doing here you know when you really think
00:56about it in the end the two-person show with him and tony kornheiser back and forth on different
01:01topics and and debating and well produced and quick and to the point like before anything before
01:07tick tock and instagram and and the iphone you know like these guys these guys have been there
01:13and and once upon a time i i would say i mean not not so much for me anymore which
01:18is just true i
01:18mean life just changes it was appointment viewing for me i want to say like through college and and even
01:24beyond that like it was it was must watch joe now i i don't i honestly don't unless it's live
01:30sports i
01:31don't ever tune into espn anymore it's just that's just me but you know clearly in in terms of this
01:36industry one of the best that's ever done it there's no no doubt about that no there is not no
01:43doubt i
01:44mean he is uh him and kornheiser kind of revolutionized uh that whole talk show aspect of it
01:51and the iran you know as i heard a great interview he just did i think it was last month
01:56craig uh where
01:58will bond was talking about the difference between a reporter and a columnist and there's a lot of
02:05let's face it there's a generation has no idea what the difference between and never will you think
02:10and never will am i right i never will understand the difference because everyone today thinks they're
02:17a columnist and thinks that they have earned some sort of right to have like we care what they think
02:23or anything else along those lines uh and he talked about how you know when he was coming up when
02:29he
02:29first got his first opportunity where they wanted him to do a story uh on site and he was like
02:35i don't
02:35think i i don't i don't have an opinion i don't know enough to have an opinion on something but
02:40there
02:40is that line is long gone here mish at this point there is no difference between a reporter and a
02:47columnist anymore is there no not really and there's so few uh columnists now at uh at newspapers per
02:56se because the columnists are generally the ones who were reporters at one point and have moved on to
03:02become coddled uh columnists and they're also unfortunately sad to say but this is life just
03:10like everybody in sports media is currently enduring it right now uh budget cuts and columnists can't
03:17survive because they're getting so much money to get one click a week or get two clicks a week off
03:22their stories we've seen you know here in south florida joe i mean just to think about dave hyde who
03:29in
03:30the south florida sun sentinel wrote for almost 40 years greg cody for 50 years at the miami herald
03:35both let go this year you know so and and those were the columnists for the primary paper at the
03:42sun sentinel and the miami herald so this is going on all across the country and you just don't see
03:48it
03:48anymore and to your point they probably feel like if we have somebody holding a microphone they probably
03:54can have an opinion too because everybody else has an opinion online so we may as well let them
03:57share theirs so it's a good point by you we have seen i mean the the newspaper industry just itself
04:05unfortunately has been you know on a very steep decline for a long time and uh you know every
04:11once in a while i'll see a paper or pick up a paper it's rare maybe once a year twice
04:15a year
04:15but uh right it's a different time now that's for sure it's uh totally different and it was it was
04:25real interesting just to hear him say about how when he was coming up listen that was that i had
04:30to everyone had to reporters report what does that mean i take myself out of it i talk to the
04:37coaches
04:38i talk to the players i talk to ownership i talk to everyone i know here's the here's what i
04:43know
04:43here's what is reporting those lines have gotten blurred over the years so you know
04:50the shefters of the world the the shams of the world it's not are they reporters or columnists
04:58half the time craig i'm wondering they're probably a mixture of both they're they're a mixture of both
05:03i would say i think they call themselves national like correspondents maybe like i think that's the
05:07word right they probably use as opposed to uh columnists but look they're they're not afraid to
05:12write an article jeff passan's not afraid to write a column or an article uh but but but the thing
05:18is is what's what's interesting is you brought them up and for good reason because those are the ones
05:24you know and joe they're the they're they're the unicorns that's it across the country like that's it
05:30like papers just don't and the local papers don't have columnists like they used to some do don't get
05:35me wrong some do but most are moving away from it
05:39you
