00:00So the Minnesota Vikings are doing something unprecedented.
00:02Yes.
00:03They are blitzing 65% of the time.
00:05Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
00:06Yeah.
00:06For the ignorance like me, what is a blitz?
00:10For those at home that never heard that word, what is blitzing?
00:12What happens during blitzing?
00:14So in football, you have seven guys lined up on the line of scrimmage.
00:18Correct.
00:18You have four guys in the back.
00:19The four guys are eligible to go off for pass.
00:21Same thing with the two ends.
00:23The five guys in the middle are not eligible.
00:25So what do you do with those guys?
00:26You make them protect you.
00:27That's the reason you have an offensive line.
00:30You have five protectors.
00:31Now, on defense, typically, standard, you send standard, basic is four rushers to come towards the quarterback.
00:39Yeah.
00:39So you have two defensive tackles, two defensive ends.
00:41That's your defensive line.
00:42Four guys, they usually rush.
00:44Sometimes they do stunts.
00:45So it's equal force meets equal force.
00:47Kind of, yeah, sort of.
00:48For the most part.
00:49But when you blitz, you send an extra one or two defenders.
00:52So one of your linebackers or one of your defensive backs, or maybe a couple of them, are going to
00:56come.
00:57And the offensive line are not going to know who.
00:59But wait a minute.
01:00Yeah.
01:00What happens if you are sending more people to the line?
01:03You're leaving yourself open for coverage.
01:05Exactly.
01:06So you have to hope that you get the quarterback before your coverage is exposed.
01:09If you haven't, so what does the offensive do?
01:12They'll typically bring in an extra tight end or an extra running back to help protect.
01:15Yeah.
01:16If the people are blitzing.
01:17And they're trying to run on the outside.
01:18But here's the thing with the Vikings are doing.
01:19I said that the Vikings are blitzing 65% of the time.
01:22They're sending an extra rusher.
01:24The second place blitzing team does it 35% of the time.
01:29So no one does it most of the time.
01:30No one leaves their coverage.
01:31And it's been working for them because they have a great record this season.
01:33And they're breaking the records when it comes to sacks.
01:36So their thing, so let me, here's what they do.
01:39Let me get my two, my two, let's get Marky, let's get Lalo.
01:44Check this out.
01:45This is what they're doing.
01:46They're sending out the cameras.
01:46We're doing this live.
01:47We have to pull our camera.
01:48Why don't you get the phone so I can show you exactly what they're seeing.
01:51So you guys are going to line up as a defense.
01:53No, no, no, no.
01:54You guys are coming after me.
01:55So there's, pretend that there's an offensive line here.
01:58So what the, what the Minnesota Vikings are doing.
02:01Yeah.
02:02Do we got, do we got me here?
02:03Okay.
02:03So what the defense, what the Minnesota Vikings are doing, instead of having a defensive line,
02:08linebackers and defensive backs, and then the blitz is coming from one of the guys in
02:12the back, they're lining an eight man front.
02:14They're putting everybody on the line.
02:16So now the offensive line doesn't know who's going to come in.
02:19So you know what they'll do?
02:21On some plays, they'll have a defensive line come in, but they'll have another defensive
02:25line drop back.
02:26So the quarterback thinks that guy's coming in and all of a sudden he's, he's in covers.
02:30Now he's dropping back, but he has an extra defensive, an extra defensive lineman coming
02:35at him.
02:35So it's all about risk versus reward.
02:38Okay.
02:39Do you want to leave yourself exposed in the end, but you know, you're going to get to
02:44the quarterback before he can even throw.
02:45I mean, you see this, these guys have no time.
02:48They drop back three, three step drop.
02:50As soon as he's looking for a receiver, he has four guys around them.
02:53You know, and one of the things that you, you, you need full throwing motion.
02:57So you don't even necessarily need to get to the quarterback, but if you're coming at
03:01me and you're stopping the throw right here, it's going to be a bad throw.
03:05Let's get practical about this.
03:06They lost their first game.
03:08Do you think the rest of the NFL is catching up to this technique is catching up to this
03:12strategy and they're a little more prepared for both scenarios.
03:15So here's what they're doing.
03:16They have the offense.
03:18If you're going to be rushing extra guys, you need to know where the soft spot is going
03:22to be, you don't necessarily know that at the beginning of the game, but after a while,
03:26you get a sense of where the blitz is coming and you know, okay, if the extra guys are coming
03:30from the right, there's going to be an open area to the right.
03:32And also they know which wide receiver is hot, which one is not, they're routing the offense
03:37to play on the weak side versus the strong.
03:39Exactly.
03:39And the quarterback and the quarterback for the Detroit, which is a Detroit quarterback.
03:47Gov.
03:47Gary Gov.
03:51Gary Gov.
03:53Gary Gov.
03:54Gary Gov.
03:54Gary Gov.
03:54Gary Gov.
03:55Gary Gov.
03:55Gary Gov.
03:55Gary Gov.
03:55Gary Gov.
03:56Gary Gov.
03:57Gary Gov.
03:57Gary Gov.
03:58Gary Gov.
03:58Gary Gov.
03:58Gary Gov.
04:00Gary Gov.
04:09Gary Gov.
04:11you're out there by yourself you you are man to man you've got to stay with that receiver
04:14it's hard in the nfl to stay with an nfl receiver so when you're the rams yeah so when you
04:20recognize
04:20who is one-on-one now what the rams try to do with puka is that they try to put
04:25him in motion
04:26to fight to see if the defensive back is following him if it follows him then they know it's man
04:31on
04:31man yeah if the defensive back on the left side doesn't follow him over to the right then what
04:35do they know that it's a zone that means he's going to run into someone else that they haven't
04:39identified so they put him in motion to basically force the defense to play man because they know
04:46puka is open if it's only one guy today what is a more reliable uh strategy right now as the
04:53game is
04:53played right now we've been talking about it this in exo xo the running backs are getting more play
04:57time because of different you know oh that's the ghost with fantasma um what's happening how is this
05:05shifting the game from the offensive side is shaping this new the reliable used to be what we call
05:11cover two which is the type of zone where the the defense will will cover the the first level and
05:17then
05:17the safeties are there to cover up anyone that comes through but when you're blitzing and you're
05:22attacking and you're getting sacks and you're stopping the run um you know you're putting the
05:27offense on on on the heels so yeah coverage is more dependable but what happens in coverage you give
05:32the little plays and a good patient offense will march down the field taking advantage of the soft
05:38spots all right so at some point you have to attack at some point you have to say we're going
05:42to send
05:42in our defense and we're going to try to sack the quarterback because they can't we can't allow them
05:48to just continue to eat up and up with running plays
