00:00What I'm milking here is the mainland tiger snake.
00:02It's probably about seven or eight different types of tiger snakes in Australia.
00:06It's the third deadliest that we have in Australia.
00:09What I'm actually doing now is just enticing the snake to bite over the rubber.
00:14The fangs are penetrating through that rubber and the venom accumulates in the bottom of the beaker.
00:20Milking the venomous snakes is so dangerous and myself and the team are going through constant training
00:25but the end result makes everything worth it.
00:27Australia is home to some of the world's most venomous snakes.
00:31The Australian Reptile Park has been milking venomous snakes for 75 years
00:36to produce an anti-venom treatment for snake bites.
00:40It's really special.
00:41When you think about how many people's lives have been saved with the work we do
00:46and you think back to the people like Eric Worrell that went out there and collected snakes
00:52and were milking snakes when there was no available anti-venom
00:55and a bite would have most certainly meant death with some of those fellows back in the early days.
01:00They are the sole supplier of terrestrial snake and funnel-web spider venom
01:04for Australia's anti-venom program, a program that has saved approximately 25,000 lives.
01:11There hasn't been a single recorded death from a funnel-web spider bite
01:15since the anti-venom was introduced in 1981.
01:19Coming into the warm months, the most important thing you need to know
01:22is snake bite first aid because it could literally save your life.
01:26Cool.
