00:21We cannot change the actions of those who came before us, we can, however, learn from
00:28the past.
00:30The transatlantic trade and enslaved persons still cast a shadow over these islands and
00:37other members of our Commonwealth.
00:41As I have said before, that shameful chapter of history is one that fills my heart with
00:47horror and my soul with the most profound personal sorrow.
00:53And yet, history also teaches us that evil need not have the last word, that character
01:03and courage can combine to overcome the most monstrous injustice as they did with the determination
01:11to end international trade in enslaved people in which the Royal Navy played such a leading
01:18role.
01:20The more I have furthered my own understanding of the issues through listening, learning
01:28and looking, the more committed I have become to finding ways for us to work in modern partnership
01:37to address the wrongs of the past with action for the future.
01:41Through improving access to education, investing in jobs and opportunities, encouraging intra-commonwealth
01:50trade and inspiring vital climate resilience measures across the world.
01:57I have always felt that there is so much that can be done to help lift up those who struggle
02:04against hardship and disadvantage.
02:09I have always tried to play my part in doing just that, for as any sailor navigating the
02:18seas knows, we cannot command the winds, least of all where the winds of yesterday have delivered
02:25to help us.
02:26But we can choose how we set our sails.
02:45Thank you, your majesty.
02:58Particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises, let us establish predictable investment frameworks.
03:06The willingness also requires an honest engagement with our shared history.
03:11And some more, we agree that the time had come for a meaningful, truthful and respectful conversation
03:18on reparatory justice.
03:20We must now carry that commitment forward through structured, inclusive dialogue on the enduring
03:26consequences of slavery and colonialism with a determination to make progress and a willingness
03:33to build consensus.
03:35At this moment, thank you.
