00:03A year on Earth is 365 days, but if we were closer to the Sun and not in our Goldilocks
00:09zone, it could be much shorter and much hotter.
00:12And on exoplanet 55 Cancri e, also called Janssen, that's exactly the case on both
00:17accounts.
00:18The super-Earth is 8 times the mass of our own planet and resides only around 40 light
00:22years away, but it orbits so close to its host star Copernicus that a year there is
00:26only 17.5 hours long.
00:28Which according to NASA, means it's 26 times closer to its star than Mercury is to ours.
00:33That's why Janssen has yet another name, Hell Planet.
00:36Surface temperatures there can reach upwards of 3600 degrees Fahrenheit, but underneath
00:41the crust is a different story.
00:42Scientists believe that while oceans of lava might cover the surface of the planet, underneath
00:46could be loads of diamonds, as Janssen is extremely high in carbon.
00:50Janssen was the first known super-Earth to ever be discovered, or a planet that is rocky
00:54rather than made of gas, but much larger than our planet.
00:56And it was found as researchers noticed the light from host star Copernicus dimming periodically,
01:01every 17 and a half hours, which scientists say likely means Janssen formed further away,
01:06and has been slowly pulled into Copernicus over time.
01:09more.
01:11Thank you for joining us.
01:11Bye.
01:13Bye.
