First Solar opened the first 1.7-gigawatt phase of its photovoltaic-module manufacturing facility in Gaffney, South Carolina, as part of a $330 million investment to move final production processes to the US. According to a company release, completing the facility by mid-2027 would lift its annual nameplate capacity to 3.4 gigawatts. The company says its Series 6 Plus thin-film modules use cadmium telluride and CuRe technology, replacing copper with more stable elements to reduce long-term power degradation. The plant is expected to support nearly 700 jobs, with about 500 reportedly filled.
