Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Helen Whately says any talk of a future apology for Britain’s part in the slave trade is a “distraction tactic from Andy Burnham when he should be tackling the problems that we face in the UK” that will only lead to demands for reparations. 00:00Obviously slavery was absolutely awful. The UK and actually many countries around the world
00:06played an awful, awful role. But also we should recognise here as the UK that we were pivotal
00:11in ending the transatlantic slave trade. We should talk about that as well as the horrors of slavery.
00:19To me this is yet another distraction tactic from Andy Byrne when he should be tackling the problems
00:24that we face in the UK, the huge challenges that we face with our economy, finding enough money,
00:30and the way he's going to fund 3% on defence, making savings to welfare. He just wants to
00:34distract from his total failure to grip and tackle the UK's problems by talking about international
00:39stuff and going on an apology for slavery. One thing leads to another. You go from an apology,
00:44you then go to reparations. And the fact is this is something that British taxpayers today
00:49had nothing to do with. It simply doesn't make sense. And as I said many countries around the
00:55world have involved with slavery, some countries even still do. So Andy Byrne is just looking
01:00to distract from the country's problems right now which is what he should be facing, fronting
01:05up.
