Today’s featured work, [Panopticon Stage], was created by synthesizing the theory of the Panopticon—a symbol of modern surveillance—by Michel Foucault, with Erving Goffman’s theory of "The Presentation of Self," which viewed society as a theater stage. For Foucault, the modern office is a Panopticon where invisible eyes are placed everywhere to domesticate humans, while for Goffman, it is a stage where one must perform a perfect image to prove their status. This project visualizes the designer who stages herself at the peak of such a system, while simultaneously operating it, set against the backdrop of a modern office surrounded by transparent glass walls where everyone monitors each other.
The line "I hold the key, I control the frame!" in the lyrics sings of the dignity of a sovereign who reverses the gaze of surveillance to control the world. Furthermore, the declaration "I am the one who rules the view" reflects the confidence of a designer who chooses to lead within the dual constraints of being both the observer and the observed.
A time when the many gazes directed at you become the very spotlight for your own stage. Following the gaze of the designer who constructs her own laws at the center of the system, I hope you enjoy a time of pleasant contemplation as you build your own stage, unbound by the eyes of others.
