Today’s featured work, [Cold Statues, Warm Breaths], was created by modernizing the paradox of the Pygmalion myth and incorporating Jean Baudrillard’s concept of "Simulacra." In Ovid’s myth, Pygmalion falls so deeply in love with his own creation that he prays for it to be brought to life—symbolizing the fundamental creative desire of an artist pursuing perfect beauty. This project portrays a subject who "simulacrizes" herself into a perfect work of art within the prison of a museum filled with white marble statues, constructing her own ideal world.
The marble statues in the video symbolize eternal, unchanging beauty, while the Muse walking among them embodies the "finite moment" that challenges that eternity. Her gestures of caressing a delicate doll or posing in classical attire show that she is not merely a beautiful model, but an artist striving for perfection, as well as the subject of the artwork itself. The fact that she is caressing not a doll, but her own reflection—and trapping herself within that subject—speaks to the most primordial creative desire of humanity to pursue perfection.
The line "Cold Statues, Warm Breaths!" in the lyrics sings of the essence of art, where eternal beauty and finite life collide and reconcile. Furthermore, the declaration "I’m real tonight" reflects the designer's will to intensely prove her existence in a place where the boundary between reality and illusion has dissolved.
