A major political clash has erupted between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress over allegations of electoral malpractice. Union Home Minister Amit Shah challenged Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi in Karnal, Haryana, to debate allegations of 'vote chori' inside Parliament rather than taking the issue to the streets. Amit Shah accused the opposition leader of disrupting House proceedings and questioning electronic voting machines only following electoral defeats. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also targeted the Congress, recalling the 1975 Emergency and accusing the party of dubious democratic credentials. In response, Congress leadership pushed for a direct presidential-style face-off between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi, alleging that the Prime Minister has avoided press conferences and accountability. Congress leaders also countered that opposition voices are suppressed in Parliament through microphone cutoffs. Meanwhile, Jharkhand Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari triggered controversy by warning the government of mass public unrest, drawing comparisons to political upheavals in Nepal and Bangladesh.

00:00Union Home Minister Amit Shah today challenged the leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi
00:04to debate allegations of vote-chori in Parliament,
00:08on the floor of the House, instead of these battles on the street.
00:11The Home Minister was in Karnal, in Haryana,
00:14as part of the BJP's nationwide Save Democracy Remove Anarchy campaign
00:18against the Congress-led opposition.
00:21But the Congress has also hit back in more ways than one,
00:26but there's breaking news coming in.
00:27And Jharkhand Health Minister and Senior Congress Leader Dr. Irfan Ansari
00:33is in the eye of a storm over his statement,
00:37which is being seen as a warning, saying words to the effect,
00:42the government should learn its lessons.
00:46The government in Nepal thought they were everything,
00:50but the people of Nepal uprooted them.
00:53The government in Bangladesh fell because they did not listen to their people.
00:59He then went on to say,
01:0240 lakh students,
01:0440 lakh students are ready to take to the streets in India.
01:10Rahul Gandhi has held them back.
01:13Modi ji should take a lesson.
01:16Ankur now.
01:17This comes as Amit Shah accused the leader of opposition
01:22of disrupting parliamentary proceedings,
01:24spreading anarchy,
01:25and questioning the electronic voting machine
01:28only when the Congress party or the opposition lost elections.
01:32He questioned Rahul Gandhi's frequent foreign visits
01:36and asserted leader of opposition.
01:39Why should he shy away from a parliamentary debate?
01:42Amit Shah's message is clear.
01:44If Rahul Gandhi has evidence to back his allegations,
01:47then parliament is the place to substantiate them.
01:50And then,
01:51the BJP has now launched a multi-pronged offensive.
01:54We have Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath,
01:56who's joined the counter-offensive.
01:57He, in fact, spoke of the emergency in 1975
02:00to question the Congress party's,
02:03as he put it,
02:04dubious credentials on democracy.
02:06He accused the Gandhi family
02:07of taking credit for electoral victories,
02:10but blaming the EVM for the party's defeat
02:13or the Election Commission of India.
02:15He went on to say,
02:17the Congress repeatedly puts family before nation.
02:21But the Congress refuses to fight on BJP's terms.
02:24It's actually setting its own terms.
02:27The Congress party insists
02:29there has to be a presidential style of face-off
02:31between Prime Minister Narendra Modi
02:33and leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi,
02:36arguing that the Prime Minister
02:37must accept the challenge
02:39and defend his record.
02:41Because Rahul Gandhi,
02:42according to Congress party,
02:43has very specific charges to make.
02:45Congress President Malikarjun Kharge
02:47accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi
02:49of avoiding questions on the very critical issue
02:52of vote-chory,
02:54of not appearing in parliament,
02:55not taking questions from the opposition
02:58and not even holding a press conference
03:00in the past 12 years.
03:02He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi
03:03to come forward,
03:05take questions,
03:06and respond specifically
03:07to opposition's allegations on vote-chory.
03:11The Congress is countering the BJP's demand
03:13for a parliamentary debate.
03:15They say opposition is routinely denied
03:20an opportunity to speak in parliament.
03:22Opposition claims the moment leader of opposition
03:25starts to speak
03:26or other opposition leaders try and speak,
03:29microphones are switched off,
03:32issues are not permitted to be raised
03:33on the floor of the House,
03:35and a meaningful debate cannot be held
03:37in such a situation.
03:39The big political question tonight,
03:42is this a political war
03:44to actually seek answers
03:46to the questions,
03:47very critical questions
03:48that are being raised
03:49on electoral integrity
03:51and democratic accountability,
03:53or will it just remain
03:55another round of accusations
03:57and counter-allegations?
03:58We'll get you all sides of this story,
04:01and then there's another angle
04:03that's now being looked into.
04:05We'll talk about that in greater detail,
04:07but first, let me get you some of
04:08the highlights of the war of words
04:10between the government
04:11and the opposition.
