00:00K&C Masterpiece back here on 105.3 The Fan. It's time for some NFL overreaction or reality.
00:08We've got a couple of other things. I heard this early in the day was possible.
00:12Whether you think Kyler Murray is actually hurt, as has been discussed, or you thought it was like a pseudo
00:19-benching,
00:20Carson Wentz will start the next game for the Vikings.
00:25Oh, man.
00:29So, I don't know.
00:30Do you think it's going to be any better?
00:33I'll say push.
00:38Kevin, I know you asked me to keep up something about the offense.
00:42It was about Clayton Adams where you defiantly said, then why don't you use him?
00:45And you were like, why? I'm going to get to that in a second.
00:49Okay.
00:50Overreaction or reality. Is that what we're doing right now?
00:52That's right.
00:55They need more from Duran Bland.
00:57Christian Parker on Duran Bland.
00:59We need more from him, and he knows that.
01:02We've had some good talks about that.
01:04I think he's battling.
01:05The frustrating thing for him and for us has been he's been close and contesting.
01:10Now it's about that final piece of just finishing those plays.
01:13We just got to get back to making that consistent.
01:17Overreaction or reality, Duran Bland's not ever going to be able to be being more than close and contesting again.
01:26You know, Corey, I almost interrupted your question with my answer, but I wanted to respect the process.
01:32But obviously, that is a reality.
01:34That is the most reality.
01:36It's just not there anymore, man.
01:38Whether it's physical ailments eventually wore him down, whether he's in his head right now, it ain't happening this year.
01:45Yeah, I know there are moments when he snaps the corner off and now he's on his way to making
01:53that pick.
01:53We've seen two of them, and they haven't turned into actual interceptions.
01:59Because, Kevin, as you've pointed out many times, the Cowboys' cornerbacks haven't intercepted a pass since Denver last year.
02:07Tri-Quest Bridges, I believe.
02:09It's like a whole year.
02:11Actually, it's more than that, I believe.
02:13Gross.
02:14Okay, so I felt bad enough, and then you tagged that on.
02:16You're welcome.
02:17You're welcome.
02:19And I'm just kind of, I don't know exactly when you know, well, that player is not capable of doing
02:27that anymore.
02:28And sometimes in that situation, you're like, well, that player is not capable of doing that anymore, and we don't
02:36have anybody else that can.
02:38He's actually our best option.
02:40We've got to figure a way out.
02:41And that's where I think the Cowboys have gotten themselves in a lot of trouble, right?
02:46I mean, that's why they traded for Porter.
02:48Yeah.
02:48Because they were like, we know where he stands on things.
02:51But then guess what?
02:52But at the same time, you just haven't had everybody healthy to be able to, like, give a definitive statement
02:58of saying, yeah, we're going to put Durant on the bench because he's not good enough.
03:01Mm-hmm.
03:01And then you're like, oh, and they've given people shots.
03:04You know, we've talked about Durant.
03:06But he's had some health issues.
03:07We just talked about speed.
03:09He had a rough go of it in these two games where he was, like, not exactly starting, but essentially
03:16getting starting snap totals.
03:19On the George Pickens, Clayton Adams front, he was asked about the importance of George Pickens and has added to
03:29this offense since his arrival.
03:31And he said, extremely, he's a premium playmaker in the NFL.
03:34I've never been on a team where we have one of them, let alone two.
03:38And I did say, express to myself, then why don't you use him more?
03:45And I understand we have CeeDee Lamb, and if you're going to bracket George Pickens, Dak's first instinct, and what
03:52Dak has been told all offseason, and probably all of the end of last year, was if you have single
03:56coverage on either one of these guys, you throw it to him.
03:59And that makes complete sense.
04:01It's, like, it's the easiest purchase you could ever make.
04:05I might as well just go to the one that's single coverage because he probably beat his guy.
04:10And then you saw what CeeDee Lamb did against Houston, and you're like, yeah, that's what we can do.
04:14And every team's just like, we're going to continue to bracket George Pickens because we're not letting that dude beat
04:19us.
04:20Because, Kevin, I still believe this, because if we do that, then at some point in this game, George Pickens
04:25is going to snap.
04:26He's going to cause a problem on that sideline because he's not getting his contract.
04:31I just, I think there are ways to get him open, and I don't think the Cowboys are executing that
04:36properly.
04:37You know, a couple of people have submitted thoughts.
04:39This is one that I think is interesting.
04:41From the 8-0-6, I concede it would never happen.
04:43But if a Vikings called and offered Kyler and only one first-round draft pick for Dak, do you say
04:49yes or ask for more?
04:51I would like a secondary draft asset.
04:54It doesn't have to be a first.
04:56Well, the reason why I would say yes to that, because people keep getting this twisted.
05:00It's like, oh, if you trade Dak, you're not going to be good, and you're going to have to search
05:04for a quarterback.
05:04I know.
05:05That's the point.
05:07You're not good now.
05:09So why not try again with a fresh look at the salary cap?
05:14So you would take a beating on next year's salary cap.
05:18But then after that, you would be off the hook going into 2028.
05:24And I know Jerry doesn't have time for a bad time.
05:27I'm just saying that's the whole reason I would do it is because you would screw over your salary cap
05:31next year,
05:32but you would get all that money off the book, and also screwing over your salary cap would prevent you
05:37from really being competitive next year,
05:40which would help get me even more draft assets going into 2028.
05:44Now, if you want to argue that you don't believe these are the people to make the correct draft picks,
05:48that's fair, but we've got to try something.
05:51Mm-hmm.
05:52No.
05:52Okay.
05:53Okay, well, fair enough, Jerry.
05:55We've disagreed before.
05:58We might again tomorrow.
06:00I'm trying to have a thought.
06:01With Bland, he's battling.
06:04There are times when you're just like, I know the dude's putting in the work.
06:08And I know, like, and that's what, you hear Schottenheimer say this on a weekly basis.
06:12He's like, I know these guys want to be great.
06:14And that's whenever I want to be like, I want to be a great defensive coordinator too, Brian Schottenheimer.
06:19And he's like, but you also don't have the experience.
06:21I'm like, okay, that's a good point, but I still want to be great.
06:24Every time he says that, I think it is so irrelevant.
06:28Because we have guys that want to.
06:30And he always talks about, hey, they're trying really hard.
06:34I don't doubt that at all.
06:35I don't care if they're trying really hard and they're not good.
06:40Unfortunately, that is the nature of results-driven businesses.
06:45Like, I feel like we try really hard on this show.
06:48If our ratings were in the absolute toilet for years, you'd be justified in making a move because you're just
06:56like, you're just not getting it done.
06:57I know you work super hard and you care a lot, but you're not getting it done.
07:01I want it to be great.
07:02Yeah.
07:02And I like that Shotty stands up for his guys.
07:05But that doesn't matter if you're not getting the results.
07:09Or it matters for a couple of weeks.
07:10But if you're in the middle of year two, who cares?
07:14So this is carryover, A, from historic Cowboys failures and the frustration on the fan base front.
07:23But also from the fact that they didn't have a winning season last year.
07:27Sure.
07:28So, like, you've extended this season into last season.
07:31A lot of fan bases do this.
07:33A lot of times I try to give it the benefit of the doubt of this season is this season
07:37alone.
07:38Right.
07:38But right now, when you're looking at Schottenheimer's record, despite injuries or things that happened before, and then now you're
07:45looking at what's going on now, it does kind of extend itself there.
07:49And I think it's totally fine to tag up with another season, like you just mentioned.
07:54It's that you don't want to be like, it's been 30 years since you can't operate your team like that.
08:02I agree with the flaws, but, okay, but you can't just say, well, we haven't done this for 31 years,
08:10so let's change everything.
08:11I know fans want that, but that's why we say, let's focus on this year.
08:15Or let's focus on this year and last year, because I think that's a fair sample size.
08:19All right, got some overreaction or reality right here, and that kind of fits in to what Clayton Adams said
08:24about George Pickens.
08:26Overreaction or reality?
08:28Don't listen to this part, Stephen Jones.
08:30If the Cowboys lose to the Colts on Sunday, they should absolutely consider trading off pieces.
08:39You know, there's part of me that wants to say, how did they lose?
08:43But at this point, because most instances I would be like, that really does matter to me.
08:48Right now.
08:49Yeah.
08:50No.
08:51Because you have to reel off 10 in a row, you know, to really make this, like, turn this thing
08:57around in my mind.
08:58I wouldn't believe even the next week if winning a game tells me that you've done enough.
09:03Now, maybe, Kevin, maybe this is, I love to think, I love to think that Schottenheimer has been slow playing
09:14this the entire time.
09:16There is no way in hell.
09:17Waiting until the trade deadline, convincing Jerry he needs one more piece to add to this thing, and then he's
09:23going to go, now we flip the switch, boys.
09:25We got everything we needed.
09:26I love to think that Brian Schottenheimer built this season backwards.
09:31As, by the way, I mention that a lot.
09:33How often do you hear me say the great coaches start backwards and work their way?
09:38I was listening to Mike Tomlin talk about that this weekend on Jason Garrett's podcast.
09:42By the way, I love listening to Mike Tomlin talk about football and, like, his mentality on it.
09:49And he said, if you want your unit to be a tough, not lazy unit, you build it backwards.
09:54You deconstruct it that way.
09:56So, hearing Tomlin say that makes me feel like I'm even more justified in my build it backwards.
10:02I'd love to think that Brian Schottenheimer thought that far ahead.
10:06That he was like, I still need some pieces, so we're not going to be good.
10:09But just good enough to convince Jerry that we can do it.
10:12Then once we get it, we'll flip a switch.
10:15But, Kevin, if you lost to the damn Colts, that would prove to me that you have not done anything
10:21to build anything that resembles a winner.
10:23Now, you might scoff at these last two names, but in theory, Pickens, Bass, Turpin, Gary, Bland, all players that
10:32you could at least see.
10:34All right, Alec, overreaction or reality?
10:36If the Cowboys lose to the Colts on Sunday, they should absolutely consider trading off pieces.
10:42Uh, reality, I'm against it in most cases just because it's not baseball, you know, where you just immediately tear
10:51down.
10:52For sure.
10:52And in football, I feel like it's a lot easier to rebound, so I'm always going to have that glimmer
10:57of hope in the back of my mind.
10:58Even if it wasn't the Cowboys we were talking about.
11:01That's why, like, even though the Chargers absolutely suck, I'm not going to be like they are the worst-run
11:06franchise in the league
11:07if they don't trade anybody at the deadline, because I get it.
11:10You can try again next year.
11:12It's a very fickle league when it comes to parity, so I'll understand it, but I would like to try
11:18to recoup some draft.
11:20Overreaction or reality?
11:22The Ravens trading for Jacoby Brissett shows they aren't serious about winning this season.
11:32Yeah, or next season.
11:34Right.
11:35I think Lamar Jackson's, man, was it Chris Carter that mentioned Miami?
11:40And I was like, oh my god, going back to Miami?
11:43I know you don't usually say, oh my god.
11:45Oh my gosh.
11:46Going back to Miami.
11:47This is my little four-year-old.
11:48Don't say, oh my gosh.
11:49Say, oh my goodness.
11:49Going back to Miami, where they built to tank, but they would love to, no block, no rock, the rest
11:57of their careers there.
12:00Yeah, Jacoby Brissett, that's an unserious quarterback right there.
12:05He didn't show anything from the holdout that he deserves any better.
12:11He was trying to hold onto the ball for too big of plays.
12:14I don't think he truly understood what the offense's nuances were and how to get the most out of it.
12:19And so now he's going there, and I don't know if he's going to be a quick enough study to
12:24make that happen there either.
12:25I know the dude can line up and command the group, but I don't think that when it comes down
12:30to it that he's got what it takes to be an elite winner there.
12:34Alec, overreaction or reality?
12:37The Ravens trading for Jacoby Brissett shows they are not serious about winning this season.
12:44Overreaction.
12:44I think it's easy to think that, but they were kind of in a position where, what else?
12:51What can we do here?
12:53And I get it.
12:54Joe Milton.
12:56I mean...
12:58He's got to start for somebody else now.
13:01I kind of get it in a weird way.
13:04You know why?
13:04Because Jacoby Brissett is like a cockroach.
13:07I swear, he has taken a beating this season behind that Arizona offensive line, and he pops right back up
13:14every single time.
13:15Is the quarterback play very good?
13:17No.
13:18But he plays every snap, and they're like, we're tired of our quarterbacks getting hurt.
13:23Let's just go get the Iron Man of the NFL, even though he sucks.
13:28I was watching Neagly, the Reacher spinoff, and one of the ladies, she said, Neagly actually said, he's a cockroach,
13:38and somebody took offense to it.
13:40And she was like, I don't mean it in the way that he's disgusting.
13:43I mean it in the way that he's going to figure out a way to stay alive.
13:46Okay.
13:46And I was like, oh, that's an interesting approach, and I think Alec described that perfectly.
13:51You guys want one more?
13:52Alec, you want one more?
13:53Give me one.
13:56Overreaction or reality, the NFC North will be the first modern NFL division to have all their teams make the
14:04playoffs.
14:06Through eight weeks, the division is 22-8.
14:11That's the third best record by a division at this point in the season since the merger.
14:16Every year.
14:18Every single year.
14:19And I don't know how many of these games they've played, because we did this with the North the other
14:22day.
14:22They've not played a ton against one another yet.
14:25Yeah, and so that's bound to happen at some point and knock some people around, but how bad the NFC
14:31East is might lend itself to this happening.
14:35You know what's really funny about that, too?
14:37One of the divisions that was better than this division was the NFC East in 2022.
14:44I just thought that was ironic.
14:45Go ahead.
14:46But the NFC South is all losing records right now, too.
14:51So you've got to think one there, one from the East.
14:55And then maybe...
14:56Can they nudge out the Rams and the Seahawks in the West?
15:02I think they have...
15:03Man, this is...
15:05Every year I say this is going to happen, that we're finally going to get it, and then one of
15:10those teams either falls off...
15:12So no, Kevin, overreaction, I just don't think it's ever going to happen, because the math doesn't work.
15:20I mean, you're right.
15:21It hasn't happened since the merger.
15:22Alec, overreaction or reality?
15:25The NFC North will be the first modern NFL division to have all their teams make the playoffs.
15:32Kind of with Corey, overreaction, where if it hasn't happened since the merger, I don't think it's smart to put
15:39my money there.
15:40Right.
15:40Nobody really knows when the merger was either, which is an arbitrary year that we say.
15:45Allegedly.
15:45Yeah, alleged, alleged year.
15:47To be fair, I wasn't alive.
15:48See?
15:49I trust other people.
15:49Were you there?
15:50I was not.
15:52Come on, Kevin.
