00:00:20Today is Thursday, November 5th.

00:00:21It is Week 9, gents.

00:00:23The Jets are coming off another loss against the Las Vegas Raiders

00:00:26since the last time we all got together on this podcast,

00:00:28and they're facing the Kansas City Chiefs in Kansas City

00:00:31as double-digit dogs on the road.

00:00:34It is a tough matchup.

00:00:35There's a lot to discuss before we get into today's game,

00:00:37but before we get to any of it, I'll start with Kaz, as always.

00:00:41How's it going today, buddy?

00:00:44Ugh, miserable, Ryan, miserable.

00:00:47Any particular reason why, Kaz?

00:00:50So, good day for myself.

00:00:52By the way, I was late five minutes last week, or seven minutes,

00:00:56and I got a bunch of crap for that.

00:00:57But you guys, you come late an hour, an hour, and I don't say anything, see?

00:01:00This wasn't clock management, Frank.

00:01:02This was greater forces than that.

00:01:06My son got his license today.

00:01:08Hey, congrats.

00:01:09Got another driver on the road.

00:01:12So, but, you know, 840 driver's test.

00:01:14I'm like, all right, you get there.

00:01:18Number one, my first issue with the state of New Jersey,

00:01:22boy, this driver's test was not very vigorous, boys.

00:01:25I'm a little, like, concerned about who's getting,

00:01:27just handing a license.

00:01:28Like, I've been working for months with this kid on driving.

00:01:31They basically made him parallel park, do a K-turn.

00:01:33They're like, all right, good.

00:01:34You didn't even make him drive on the road.

00:01:35So, I'm like, okay.

00:01:37So, anyway, so the way this DMV is set up,

00:01:40there's a main DMV building,

00:01:41and then there's a building just for the driver's tests.

00:01:44And so, he went in, he was inside.

00:01:46I had to wait outside.

00:01:48We were there for, like, an hour.

00:01:50And he's inside.

00:01:51I'm waiting, waiting, waiting.

00:01:53So, I text him.

00:01:55I'm like, hey, how's it looking?

00:01:56Because I knew you guys were waiting.

00:01:58And he's like, I think I'm 10 minutes from being done.

00:02:00Like, I'm the next one in line.

00:02:02I got to get my picture taken, sign a form,

00:02:05pay for the license, and we're out.

00:02:06Like, all right, good.

00:02:07All of a sudden, this, like, shrieking alarm goes off.

00:02:11The fire alarm in the building goes off.

00:02:13They make everyone evacuate the building.

00:02:16So, now we're, like, across the street,

00:02:18waiting for the thing.

00:02:19And so, then the woman comes over,

00:02:21and she goes, she grabs my message.

00:02:23She goes, you were first in line, right?

00:02:25Like, you were just about to go.

00:02:26And we're like, yeah.

00:02:27She's like, okay, go to the main building.

00:02:29Just go to the main building,

00:02:30and they'll take care of you.

00:02:32So, we go to the main building.

00:02:33Here he has a number.

00:02:34So, we walk in, and the woman says,

00:02:37just take a seat.

00:02:37They're going to transfer the numbers over here.

00:02:39Okay.

00:02:40Half hour goes by.

00:02:42His number's not called.

00:02:43So, I go up and I go,

00:02:44we don't have that number.

00:02:45That number was closed out an hour ago.

00:02:47I was at the other building.

00:02:48Like, what do you mean?

00:02:50Here's your new number.

00:02:52Go sit.

00:02:53Half hour goes by.

00:02:54I go up.

00:02:54Now, you know, you're telling yourself,

00:02:57don't lose it, right?

00:02:58Like, there's a police officer stationed

00:03:00right next to these people,

00:03:01because you know there are meltdowns

00:03:04at the DMV every single day, right?

00:03:06I get it.

00:03:07So, I'm like, don't lose it.

00:03:08Stay calm.

00:03:09So, she's like, yeah, you're fifth in line.

00:03:11You're fifth in line.

00:03:12Go back and sit down.

00:03:13Okay.

00:03:14Another half hour goes by.

00:03:16I find out that I'm like,

00:03:18please help me.

00:03:19Please.

00:03:20We've been there for three and a half hours

00:03:23at this point.

00:03:24So, finally, they pushed me to the front line.

00:03:28He got it done.

00:03:29We got out of there shortly under four hours

00:03:31at the DMV this morning,

00:03:33but he's got his license.

00:03:35So, that's how my day's gone, Ryan.

00:03:37So, watch out.

00:03:39Dread lightly.

00:03:42I figured we could talk about, you know,

00:03:44like all the off-season head coaching candidates

00:03:45the Jets are going to go after in Target.

00:03:52I will say this about the DMV.

00:03:53It is a special place

00:03:56in terms of just ruining your day

00:04:00And I think it's a perfect fantasy football punishment

00:04:09But we got a football game to talk about.

00:04:11I don't know how much we're going to talk about this game

00:04:12because it is not going to be pretty, obviously, on Sunday

00:04:16considering Vegas does not favor the Jets in this one.

00:04:19Kaz, I always start with a vibe check.

00:04:21I can't imagine they're very high right now,

00:04:23but what's the vibe check on this team

00:04:25after, again, losing to the Raiders?

00:04:27Yeah, it's not good.

00:04:29The vibes aren't good.

00:04:30The vibes haven't been good the last couple weeks now.

00:04:33You know, I think, yeah,

00:04:36this is the team that needs a win

00:04:38and you're staring at a pretty impossible scenario here.

00:04:41Arrowhead Stadium, the last time the Jets won

00:04:43at Arrowhead Stadium, Aaron Glenn was a starting cornerback

00:04:45for the Jets.

00:04:46So it's been a while.

00:04:49Yeah, 1998 is the last time the Jets won there.

00:04:51Not that they play there that often,

00:04:53but it hasn't been great for them.

00:04:56Remember Herm opened the season in 2005.

00:04:58They got their butts kicked.

00:04:59You might remember that game.

00:05:00You might remember Ryan Fitzpatrick

00:05:02throwing six interceptions there.

00:05:04The last time they were there was during the COVID season,

00:05:08Gase 2020, and they got killed by the Chiefs.

00:05:11So, yeah, it's a team that needs a win

00:05:12and there's not one on the schedule right now.

00:05:14And they know they let one slip away on Sunday.

00:05:17Yeah.

00:05:18Frankie, you know, I hear you,

00:05:21what you've been saying all week

00:05:22and from your reaction to postgame.

00:05:28What is your mentality going into this week, week nine?

00:05:31The Jets seem to have, like,

00:05:33it looks like a lame duck head coach.

00:05:35How are you mentally approaching this as a fan

00:05:39the rest of the season?

00:05:42Yeah, man, these are the situations as a fan

00:05:45that you really don't want to be in

00:05:46because it's tough to want to root for a team

00:05:49that is really going nowhere.

00:05:51And you know the coach is likely not going to be here next year.

00:05:54Um, and you, you know,

00:05:57don't want to root hard against them

00:05:59because it's just not innate in what fandom's about.

00:06:02You're supposed to root for your team,

00:06:03but you also obviously want a higher draft pick.

00:06:07And it looks like there's one quarterback

00:06:09that everyone's got their eye on right now.

00:06:11And that'll change, by the way,

00:06:12or could change in the next couple months

00:06:14in terms of is Drew Mestemaker, that QB1,

00:06:18you know, solidified himself as that guy.

00:06:20As some people are calling him a can't miss too.

00:06:24But yeah, I don't know, right?

00:06:26I don't know.

00:06:27I think right now, I just think the Jets

00:06:29and whomever's there making the shots

00:06:32or calling the shots upstairs at One Jets Drive,

00:06:34I think the best thing to do right now

00:06:37is to look into the future of this team.

00:06:38There's a lot of things that you can look forward to.

00:06:40We know the three first round picks.

00:06:42There's a lot of cap space, you know, over 100 million

00:06:47they're projecting, right, for free agents.

00:06:50So I wouldn't do anything that's going to hurt

00:06:52what this team could be in a year or two right now.

00:06:55If you can trade a player, trade a player.

00:06:57If you're, I don't know, it's tough to say tank,

00:07:01because again, we've been having this conversation here

00:07:03since I started on this show.

00:07:05I know.

00:07:05And like, players don't tank.

00:07:06Like Kazza said, like, you're not purposefully

00:07:09going to miss a block.

00:07:10Oh, miss that block on third down

00:07:12so, you know, we can punt and like, we don't score.

00:07:14So like, I never know how to, you know,

00:07:16gauge how to tank, quote unquote,

00:07:18because it doesn't make sense.

00:07:19But if you can play some young guys,

00:07:22if you could play D'Angelo Pons,

00:07:23if you could play, you know,

00:07:26if you could target Sadiq more

00:07:27than maybe he's ready to be targeted.

00:07:29I'm just saying you can do things right now

00:07:30that develop your young guys,

00:07:33but maybe don't put yourself in the best position

00:07:35to win on that Sunday, per se.

00:07:37So that would be my thought.

00:07:39Like, how do these young guys look?

00:07:40Yeah.

00:07:41There's a lot there, Frankie.

00:07:42And I want to go to Kaz there about this as well.

00:07:46I think a lot of the discourse and talk right now,

00:07:48Kaz, amongst Jets fans and content creators

00:07:50and your writers yourself is,

00:07:52there is some hope, it feels like,

00:07:54even though they're two and six.

00:07:56And the hope is, is that the young talent

00:07:58is starting to develop,

00:08:00especially on the offensive side of the ball.

00:08:02We've seen now six different receivers

00:08:04go for over a hundred yards in a football game

00:08:07for the Jets in this passing attack.

00:08:08We've seen Braylon Allen these last couple of weeks

00:08:11just really look like a number one running back.

00:08:13They're getting Brees Hall,

00:08:14it seems like probably back this week.

00:08:17And they have two young stud tackles

00:08:20that I think who are starting to look better

00:08:22and better again as the season's progressing.

00:08:24Would you agree with that assessment

00:08:26that we are, we are,

00:08:27there's hope because of the draft picks,

00:08:30because of the young talent on this team?

00:08:32Or should we still pump the brakes?

00:08:33There's still a lot of games left

00:08:35and more can be told about this franchise.

00:08:39Well, I'm not sure I understand the question, Ron.

00:08:42I think both are true.

00:08:43I think, I think like, I'm not,

00:08:46there's nine games left in the season.

00:08:48I don't think you're going to like tank mode right now

00:08:50or play the young guys is an interesting like concept.

00:08:54They should be playing D'Angelo Pons anyway,

00:08:57in my opinion.

00:08:58Like the defense, defense has issues.

00:09:03Brownlee committed a bad penalty last week.

00:09:05He's got a coverage issues.

00:09:06Like let's, let's see what Pons can do.

00:09:08There's no one, I don't buy into this thing of like

00:09:10that he's being kept off the field

00:09:12by superior performances right now.

00:09:14So other than him though,

00:09:15I'm not sure exactly who else you want to see a lot of.

00:09:20So I think there's nine games left.

00:09:22You're still trying to win games.

00:09:23Like you have to be, you have to honor that.

00:09:26You have to honor, there's 53 guys in the locker room.

00:09:28There, there, there's guys,

00:09:30they're risking injury every week.

00:09:32I thought what the Jets did at the end of the last season

00:09:34with Brady Cook as a starting quarterback

00:09:36was tough to stomach.

00:09:38If you're, if you were a competitor or like they were,

00:09:41they were, that was tanking.

00:09:43You know, if you, we've ever said,

00:09:44I don't know what tanking looks like.

00:09:45That was tanking.

00:09:46They were playing a quarterback who didn't belong in the NFL.

00:09:50I don't know.

00:09:51Offense to Brady Cook.

00:09:52He was a nice guy, but they, he didn't,

00:09:53wasn't ready to play in the NFL yet.

00:09:55They played him.

00:09:56They were, they, you know, they basically were like,

00:09:58okay, we've been games.

00:10:00I don't know.

00:10:00Glenn can't afford to do that.

00:10:01I know we all think he's gone, but he's not yet.

00:10:04And the Jets are still making evaluations on him.

00:10:07There's still belief in the building that they can go on a run here

00:10:10and turn this around.

00:10:12That's what they have to believe inside that building.

00:10:15So I, I think the conversation about like, oh, do you play cake,

00:10:19cake club, Nick?

00:10:19I've heard that that's for December.

00:10:22Like, I don't think we're having that conversation until the bye week.

00:10:24Maybe really to the bye week.

00:10:26Not after these next two, maybe I was thinking maybe a Buffalo game.

00:10:29You got two cupcakes in, in Los Angeles and Miami coming up.

00:10:33So the first, first, first thing is first is Gino Smith is playing very,

00:10:37very well right now.

00:10:38Completely.

00:10:40I don't like, you can't justify, like,

00:10:41how do you look at the Mario Davis and go, Hey, we're going to bench.

00:10:45We're benching Gino Smith, who might set the record,

00:10:49the franchise record for yards in a season passing.

00:10:51We really want to get a look at this kid to see, you know, he might be,

00:10:54he might be a good player two or three years down the road.

00:10:56We want to look at him.

00:10:57Like you can't justify that right now.

00:11:01Like, you know, or what's the bye week?

00:11:03Is the bye week the second week?

00:11:04The week's after, yeah.

00:11:13I get, as a fan, you're, you're past it.

00:11:16But I think if you're in that building,

00:11:18you're still trying to win games with everything you can.

00:11:20I get the mentality in the building.

00:11:21I guess my, my retort to that would be is,

00:11:24could there be a possibility of if these next two weeks get really ugly

00:11:27and LaVegas is telling us it's going to be double digit probably again next week against Buffalo.

00:11:32If they lose back-to-back ugly games,

00:11:34could Woody Johnson and Darren Mugee confer to each other and say,

00:11:37look, Aaron Glenn's a dead man walking.

00:11:40This team is not playing good football right now, especially on defense.

00:11:43Do we pull the plug on him and then evaluate everything we just talked about and playing the younger guys?

00:11:51I don't think so.

00:11:52But that being said,

00:11:54and I've said this since the summer when I asked about Aaron Glenn,

00:11:57it's how it looks, right?

00:11:58So like, yeah.

00:11:59So if you, if there's a, there's,

00:12:01there could be a scenario where it's really,

00:12:04really brutal the next two weeks and they do that.

00:12:07But I really,

00:12:07I think he's going to finish the season as the head coach guys.

00:12:10I will be surprised if he doesn't the bi-week might be that one area where I say,

00:12:15okay,

00:12:15if they're going to do something,

00:12:16they would do it during the bi-week because then you have more time for the coaching staff to get

00:12:21ready past that.

00:12:22But I think Aaron will be here till the end of the year.

00:12:25Cause let me just say one quick thing to that.

00:16:17but I don't think there's a ton right now that you're doing.

00:16:49you're dealing with a lame duck head coach right now,

00:16:51who just is trying to try and win it,

00:16:54win a football game.

00:16:55I understand he's keeping him in these games for the most part.

00:16:59I have my doubts on how these next two weeks are going to go against the,

00:17:02the cream of the crop and the Kansas city and Buffalo to premier AFC teams.

00:17:06If they actually compete and lose by one score,

00:17:09maybe like 10 points in some of these games.

00:17:12All right.

00:17:14But I,

00:17:15there's not much to take out from the,

00:17:16from this team besides the young guys that we just mentioned and what this

00:17:20offense can build with those,

00:17:22the future quarterback you want on to be,

00:18:20the chargers and dolphins games should be winnable for the jets.

00:18:24But the way this coach and this coaching staff have mismanaged games and not been able to get this team

00:18:29over the hump to win these games.

00:18:30I'm going to believe you're going to lose those games going forward.

00:18:33And they should lose those games because that's what's better for the future of this franchise to get the quarterback

00:18:37they need for the future.

00:18:38But that's another discussion for another day.

00:29:15Gino Smith is notoriously not the best or most efficient red zone quarterback.

00:29:22Takes a lot of sacks.

00:29:23He's a smaller build,

00:29:25has smaller hands,

00:29:27doesn't always see over the top.

00:29:28And he tends to hold onto the ball too long.

00:29:31And also his scramble abilities always been a bit overrated.

00:29:35He's actually just a very traditional kind of pocket passer,

00:29:39especially at this point in his career.

00:29:41So you're getting nothing there,

00:29:43right?

00:29:43It's not like what cause you can't run a read option with the guy.

00:29:45You're not going to run an RPO.

00:29:47There is no threat of him running.

00:29:48He holds onto the ball too long.

00:29:50You take a sack in the red zone.

00:29:52You're done.

00:29:52The drive's over.

00:29:53You're not scoring a touchdown.

00:29:54So I mean,

00:29:55like we're seeing that with Gino and traditionally,

00:29:58I mean,

00:29:59if you go through his time,

00:30:00even in Seattle cause he had that one year.

00:30:02We talk about,

00:30:03I have it up right here,

00:30:044,320 yards.

00:30:06He threw for 70% completion,

00:30:08but he only had 21 passing touchdowns.

00:30:10That's a low number considering the yardage.

00:30:13So Gino's always traditionally been more of a high volume passing guy

00:30:17yardage below in terms of touchdowns.

00:30:20He's been like that his whole career.

00:30:23And,

00:30:23and it's the one thing I will say too about the red zone for,

00:30:27for you guys is Gino has taken his shots into the end zone.

00:30:30Even on felt like early on in those red zone opportunities and drives,

00:30:34I would like them to work like getting some more yardage.

00:30:38So it's closer situations,

00:30:39which again is not something that the jets are strength right now.

00:30:42And I wonder like,

00:30:44could they develop just a little bit,

00:30:46like not so much aggressive into the end zone.

00:30:49I don't know.

00:30:50Cause maybe we're being too nitpicky just because of how bad they've been.

00:30:53And they are the worst team in the red zone and converting for touchdowns.

00:30:56So is it fair to critique them that way?

00:31:02the chiefs are third in red zone defense.

00:31:05So this is going to be,

00:31:06they're going to be tough,

00:31:12there's the biggest issue offensively right now is trying to figure out that

00:33:26So is there a way though,

00:33:28for Frank Reich to still use that 12 and 13 heavy tight end personnel,

00:33:34And can he still be able to get some running lanes,

00:33:38just like Braylon did and take advantage of them?

00:37:34but Braylon Allen has blown me away with how he's played the last few weeks.

00:37:37He's played much better than I thought he could.

00:37:41I always thought he was talented in training camp,

00:37:43but I didn't think he'd be this good.

00:37:46I'd be,

00:37:47I wouldn't back off of that until I had to.

00:37:49I think a huge part of this guys is because of this offense and how it's

00:37:54been able to run the football besides Braylon Allen is because of this

00:37:57offensive line has been playing a lot better as well lately,

00:38:00the last couple of weeks.

00:38:01And you're seeing some really nice returns.

00:38:04I think cause since the return of Dylan Parham and on this offensive line

00:38:07unit,

00:38:07it feels like they've been a better unit overall.

00:38:11And I'm curious,

00:38:13can this offensive line,

00:38:14if they can stay healthy,

00:38:16can they continue to build on what they've done?

00:38:19Or are you going to again,

00:38:21say the real test is this week against the chiefs and the next week versus

00:38:25bills as well.
