Democrats swept the 2026 US midterm elections, winning the House and putting two historic new mayors in charge of New York and Los Angeles.
The Associated Press has called 249 House seats for Democrats, with a dozen more races still leaning their way — far past the 218 needed for a majority. When the new Congress is sworn in on January 3, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York is expected to become Speaker, the first Black Speaker in American history.
In New York City, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani won the mayor's race with just over 50 percent of the vote, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo. Born in Uganda, Mamdani becomes the first South Asian and first Muslim mayor of New York City. He campaigned on freezing rents, free buses and universal childcare, and says he wants to work with President Trump on affordability and housing. Mr Trump has agreed to meet him at the White House.
In Los Angeles, Nithya Raman, a 45-year-old urban planner born in Kerala, India, defeated incumbent mayor Karen Bass with nearly 53 percent of the vote. Bass conceded on Thursday morning. Raman becomes the first South Asian and first Indian American mayor of Los Angeles, America's second-largest city, and takes office in December as the city prepares to host the Summer Olympics in 2028.
Democrats also won the Virginia governor's race with Abigail Spanberger, and according to the Associated Press flipped governor's seats in Georgia, Ohio, Iowa and Texas. With both chambers of Congress in Democratic hands, according to projections, President Trump faces two years of a Congress that can investigate his administration and block his agenda.
