The Egret's Umbrella — Little Fish Come to Rest in Its Shade

A Snowy Egret spreads its wings like a little umbrella, making a cool patch of shade on the hot sunny shallows. There is no food in that shade — just a quiet spot out of the sun. One by one, a few tiny fish drift in slowly to rest in the cool shadow, right in front of the egret.

Then, calmly and in one smooth movement, the egret lifts one of the little fish out of the water and holds it up in its bill.

This gentle behaviour is called canopy feeding — the egret makes the shade, and the fish come to it on their own.

Pure white plumage, black legs, and those famous bright yellow feet.
