00:00let's put on the spot a great man a great coach a great man of integrity a guy that never
00:06really
00:06seems to get rattled one way or another on what he's on social media man shout out to my guy
00:12coach
00:12as we walking him in on the wise heart right we make it right call call right hotline coach
00:17good morning how you feel what's going on guys good morning to you thanks for having me on uh
00:22thank you man so i received you you know your game plan breakdown for the saints phenomenal work
00:27as always and you were very very detailed let's start here in your mind the cleveland browns beat
00:35the new orleans saints if blank happens well they got to run the football they got to win first down
00:41on both sides of the ball but they got to run the football and stop the run um you know
00:44you have a
00:44young quarterback in there you got to put him in situations where the defense doesn't get to pin
00:48their ears back so the guys around i've always told people this you don't win uh in spite of the
00:54quarterback you don't you win with the quarterback and you got to help your quarterback out they got
00:58to stop the run they got to create good field position but for me it really comes down to
01:02winning first down on both sides of the ball because if you win first down on defense you can
01:07then attack the uh you know attack tyler shuck uh and then if you win first down on offense you
01:12put
01:12chador sanders in a position where they can run or pass and then that's when the play action uh shots
01:18happen that's when those vertical shots happen that he's very good at so for me uh if you see the
01:23browns they got to move they got to be able to move the line of scrimmage but that's for me
01:26is where it starts winning first down on both sides of the ball coach ray is great to talk to
01:30you here
01:30this morning excited for this conversation we've gone back and forth a little bit on the bird app but
01:35uh it's great to uh it's great to talk to you um hey watching uh watching chador i watched a
01:40lot
01:40of his tape from last year in prep for in prep for tomorrow um and to me in my opinion
01:45there's two
01:46different there's two different quarterbacks back there it's the chador sanders who plays on time
01:50who plays off you know top of the drop back foot ball out or the first progression second
01:56progression third and and getting through his progressions quickly and then there's the chador
02:00that tries to create a little bit maybe there's no nobody open down the field and he starts to drift
02:05and starts to try to play a little bit of a little bit of the hero ball um that can
02:09that quarterbacks
02:09can sometimes get into um i think it's really important uh on sunday for the two most important
02:15people are are todd munkin and travis switzer to put a good game plan together i'm putting your
02:20coach hat back on coach riz how are you finding early completions um and easy completions early
02:25in the football game uh for chador sanders to get him into that rhythm so that he's operating at a
02:30fast pace well what the balance they've created that's a great question so what i'm trying to do
02:35if i'm if i'm going into this game and i don't care who the quarterback is he's a guy who
02:38hasn't
02:38started eight weeks you got to get him on track right he hasn't played with live bullets in a while
02:42so
02:42for me i'm thinking more players than i'm thinking plays i'm not thinking scheme
02:46and early on i'm thinking who are the guys who can get me easy yards and in this offense right
02:51now
02:51that's casey concepcion and harold fannin boston's great down the field judy's been solid uh the run
02:56game is going to get better but when we talk about easy throws with within five to ten yards that's
03:02casey concepcion and harold fannin so early on i'm thinking touches i'm not thinking scheme i'm not
03:07thinking i'm not going to put his mind through a ton i'm going to build the confidence so i'm i'm
03:11thinking hitches and slants and bubble screens and things like that just to get the rhythm uh and
03:16when you talk about some of his habits those are things he learned you know as a quarterback
03:20i i think when because he lacks such protection in college and you know his first year he was under
03:25a
03:25lot of pressure you create bad habits and one of those bad habits quarterbacks create all the time
03:30is creating time for themselves and why they they do that by drifting so i'm going to take that out
03:34of
03:35the equation and i'm going to make easy automatic reads that just get the ball out and then as the
03:40game gets in as you get lathered up and get a sweat going and starts you know starts getting the
03:44game
03:44rolling then you get into those you know he throws the ball very well between the hashes at about 15
03:49to 20 yards he throws the ball vertically very well but those all things happen you know by early on
03:55getting some touches and this is different right last year you you last year you wanted to see what
03:59he had the season was kind of over when he played now you're trying to win games he's involved and
04:03he's
04:04got to be a part of the whole process protect your defense make sure your special teams are good
04:08good positions he's not expected to go out there i think he can play so for me the the evaluation
04:13and what i'm thinking for him is different than it was last year this year i know what he can
04:18do i
04:18watched him in practice all the time he's got to go out and execute protect the football uh make sure
04:23he you know if it's third down and long that might not be the time to press it deep take
04:27the check down
04:28let your team punt first down play action maybe that's the chance so being a complete team player i think
04:34he can i'm not really stressed on what he can do i think the uh footwork has gotten better the
04:38anticipation i'm looking forward to see what he can do but to answer your question hey i would just say
04:44touches first don't think about scheme think about guys who can make plays for you coach jared verse
04:51had a lot to say this week in the media and you're somebody who who's coached that's why your coach
04:57right as a coach what was your reaction to how open he was about his feelings about you know his
05:05teammates not really having his back or lack thereof etc you know what's your thoughts on the comments
05:11do stuff like that uh should stuff like that stay in house and does that have any type of negative
05:18impact on the locker room well for me it's all about the the person you are and for me you
05:24guys are out
05:25there as much as i am jared verse is a guy who's very emotional he's very emotional in practice he
05:29practices very hard he talks all practice he's a guy that generates his own kind of energy he generates
05:35his own kind of like backs himself into a corner he creates this uh this idea that he's being held
05:40down or uh disrespected and that's kind of you know think about back to baker that's kind of the
05:44where he thinks he works best so he's not out of character when he's talking he's not out of
05:48character uh when he's doing those things so for me i don't mind it and for me in fact i
05:53don't want
05:53him to go the other way because he's affected by it be who you are just play a little bit
05:57better
05:57and i think he will you know there's a lot of things that go into him not getting uh the
06:02production
06:02people want but he'll be he'll get there if he's still a very young player uh in terms of him
06:07being
06:07frustrated i understand that you know i was uh i've had some people disagree with me but you know
06:11there's some written rules in football one of those written rules that doesn't make it right is if
06:15you jump on extra point you're going to get dumped and and that's pretty much that's the nature if you
06:20ask anybody uh there's guys who've been doing this a long time it doesn't make it right but that's
06:24usually what ends up happening now a lot of times you don't see those things happen uh you know i
06:28heard carson sweston say i didn't see it or i would have protected him um i go more with that
06:33but i'm
06:33also not frustrated that he's he's trying to build a um a culture where you have each other's back
06:39especially inside that building you know when you lose at the nfl level college level high school
06:44level in that locker room is the only people that support you right now no one supports the browns
06:49right there they just got their butts kicked everybody's telling how bad they are they have
06:53to support each other they have to have each other's backs at all times and you it might mean
06:58you have somebody's back even when you don't necessarily agree or you're not sure what's
07:02going on or whatever it is just because you know everybody else is against you and that's important
07:07in football when things go get bad is that everybody in that locker room you can have it out with
07:11each
07:11other but in that locker room you have to really be connected and and this game their effort and
07:18their connectivity it's going to be big this week because if they play well and play together they're
07:22going to win football games i i also liked in his in that comment we're talking about how he said
07:27that he addressed it with the team and with the defense behind closed doors and then brought it
07:31out there and i and i do in that perspective trust that he did actually do that and i think
07:35coach is to your point like that is that's also part of it um coach is sticking on that side
07:40of the football um there's some glaring glaring problems right now with the cleveland
07:44browns run defense um i have my opinions on it from a schematic standpoint um just how teams are
07:50basically using the browns approach against them um and capitalizing off of it uh what do you see
07:57um over the past couple weeks that the browns are are how the browns are being exploited um
08:01specifically on the ground from the both the titans and the pittsburgh steelers well you know one thing
08:07i will say backs they face have been very good that's the first thing you want to say they face
08:11some
08:11very good nfl backs now the schematic part of it i agree with right they're a gap penetrating team
08:16they get up field so that defensive line gets up field uh one of the plays i posted this week
08:20they
08:21got beat with a simple trap play that we all put in in fifth grade right and that's part of
08:24it that's
08:25that's one of the plays we all put in against defenses who are going to get up field so they're
08:29getting trapped they're getting crunched they're getting whammed same thing todd munkin did to them
08:33when he was with the ravens now part of that success they've had with the number of sacks and the
08:38pressures and tackles for a loss there's a side effect of that and that's one of the things you
08:42get up field you know the tony pollard uh touchdown that was a schematic thing aiden huntington slants
08:47inside barnett's way outside big b gap tough to tough to make a tackle for a linebacker so there's
08:52part of that then they're getting vertically displaced at times where um they're not on the
08:57move and they're getting moved out of their gap both vertically and horizontally that's part of it as
09:01well so they have to make sure schematically that maybe play through the shoulder a little bit maybe
09:06not get up field as much uh and then they got to make sure they anchor and the best way
09:10to anchor
09:11in there in your gap is to make sure you attack the man and not the gap and there's some
09:15schematic
09:15things that you know they're going through so um part of that is like you said how they run it
09:21you
09:22don't want to get away from who you are as a defense so there there are going to be some
09:25times
09:25you give up some chunk plays the biggest issue i have with all that is they got to make the
09:29tackle
09:30the last line of defense has to make the tackle so those dvs and safeties you have to make it
09:35a 20 yard run
09:36not a 50 yard touchdown run and if you look at that touchdown runs from pollard for example
09:39somebody's got to get them on the ground after 20 yards right that's a schematic play the offensive
09:44guys get paid good money too that's the job of those defensive backs in this pressure front you
09:48got to make tackles i'm sure they would tell you the same thing so there's a lot of things that
09:52tie
09:52into it you don't want to get away from who you are for me it comes down to anchor in
09:56there a little
09:56bit play your man a little bit but finally those dbs make sure you tackle and get it on the
10:00ground
10:00because then eventually you get the tackle for a loss because of the scheme so it's a combination
10:05of everything i think they'll clean that up they'll get better and better at it how can we
10:09how can we stop ourselves from the new orleans saints looking at this as a get right game when
10:16you look at the saints they average 86 yards uh rushing the game you look at the saints you know
10:22they score a fewer first quarter points than we do and there might be looking at the cleveland
10:28browns the same way that we're looking at them this is the opportunity to get ourselves right so
10:32how can we avoid you know that type of letdown against them when we know that they're looking
10:37at us looking their chops because we have some of these same similar issues well i would say this
10:42the thing that i always say each week and i i pick the browns each and every week and the
10:47reason i do
10:47that is because i'm not i don't anticipate failure and i don't anticipate uh not playing well and
10:52sometimes it happens but feeling that you can go one and oh that's this is a great game for it
10:57you
10:57don't ever if you hear a coach for in my perspective this i learned this from my dad if
11:01you hear a coach about we got to get up for a game or this is a get right game
11:04those kind of things
11:06scare me right because it doesn't matter who you play when you play you play on uh thursday night
11:11you play on sunday you play on monday afternoon your philosophy has to stay the same because that
11:15drives how you practice during the week and your situational stuff and how you take care of your
11:19body and how you eat and how you sleep and all these things that we talk about as athletes you
11:24have to be
11:25the same each week you can't uh we're playing the same so we're going to do it this way we're
11:28going
11:28to get right or we're playing the broncos or we're playing the rams it's got to be a culture where
11:33each and every day you're expecting the best out of yourself and that's what when people you know
11:39they're always uh we always they're always trying to ask me you know to pick ahead and i always say
11:43want to know and the reason why is because that drives how you prepare and i think that's the key
11:48you're going to see uh how the browns prepare each week uh it's going to start adding up now right
11:53i think
11:54todd munkin does a great job of preparation so when you prepare each week doesn't mean you're
11:59going to win every week but you've prepared to win you know what you're attacking you know what
12:03you're going to do you know the scheme you know the fronts the coverages the blitzes etc
12:08because that's how you practice every week it doesn't matter who you play it doesn't matter when
12:11you play you have to keep the same mantra each week uh when people say culture it's not it's not
12:16what you say it's what you do this is a great when you talk about trap games or uh get
12:21right games
12:21for me those are all words that i don't like right because it should be the same prep each each
12:26day
12:26actually each rep um you only worry about what you what's right in front of you i know those are
12:31all
12:31cliches but it really means a lot in a long season so that's what i'm looking for if the browns
12:36come
12:36out practice away they're going to win this game want to know each week it's my favorite thing uh it's
12:40my favorite thing that you always you always say coach riz and that's part of your process um there as
12:46well this is a big one this is a big one uh for the cleveland browns my favorite part about
12:50this
12:50uh riz is that um in two losses after the browns both after the browns two losses this year they've
12:56responded each time with a victory what was your approach back in the day um after after a loss how
13:01you approached the team got back to your process got back to your business and then um what's what
13:06do you think todd munkin's doing to uh to get these guys right after these losses to come back and
13:10uh
13:11and get back in the win category well part of being one and oh is uh the the idea of
13:16flushing it so when
13:17you come in after a loss it's sometimes easier after a loss because everybody's a little bit more
13:20motivated it's the same thing after a big win when they beat pittsburgh on thursday night you have to
13:24somebody's got to be in charge and that's todd munkin somebody's got to be in charge of saying
13:27that want to know mantra means you flush it that means you you figure out you get up the next
13:32morning
13:32you watch the film you fix what you can and you flush it and you start preparing for the next
13:36opponent
13:37so uh that's sometimes when people come in um you know they're down or they're sore whatever it is
13:43you got to have the same energy it's relentless energy it's relentless uh the idea of uh getting
13:49up you're so what we got beat so what the the browns haven't won pittsburgh uh in 23 or so
13:55what
13:55that has nothing to do you know what all those things like it didn't pan out but that's kind of
13:59the mantra so you get up for me it was always about you know we we played on friday win
14:03or lose you get
14:03up on saturday morning and you go to work you don't let your team uh kind of sulk around you
14:08don't
14:08let you also don't let your team tell you know say how good they are right you kind of keep
14:12the
14:13same mentality of we're going to control today and i i've always felt and my dad was a guy who
14:18in 45 years never got fired and i always told him how awesome that was that's kind of the approach
14:23it's very cliche it's very old school but if you just get up and you very business like all right
14:28we won a big game time to move on all right we lost a big game we got a loss
14:33is a loss whether you
14:33got beat to nothing or you got a boat race like that did last week it's okay it's a loss
14:38it's the same
14:39there's not more losses last week because you got really beat up right there's not you didn't get
14:42three for that one game you got one so it's just the idea of can you continuously do day in
14:48and day
14:48out routine that's what successful teams do they're just relentless and they're a simple everyday
14:53approach coach i want to pivot a little bit and we'll probably wrap you up with this because this
15:01was something that was on my heart to talk to you about we all know how you know the decision
15:05played
15:05out glenville didn't make it to the playoffs uh university beat salem i think that was that was
15:11yesterday but i guess my question to you for somebody who is has been a part of this for a
15:16long period of time i think clearly the system is broken and kids is being impacted you know
15:22unfortunately by people not doing their due diligence or just simply their job your thoughts your opinion
15:29on what we can do to fix this broken system so something as simple as where you live or where
15:36you
15:36don't live don't have this type of impact going forward well it's interesting because i will say
15:41this you hate that um the the kids the results for kids are impacted by adults and all these
15:49decisions that are being made and all these controversies that are happening uh at these
15:53schools or whether they're right or wrong they're made by adults and unfortunately the adults
15:58are causing the issues for the kids and i don't know what the solution is i don't know what the
16:04answer is you know nil has made it where you know college has become um a business and that's going
16:10to trickle down into um high school so for me it's not really what the rules are it's having rules
16:15and whatever those rules are i've always been a big believer in following them and if you don't like
16:21them how do we go about changing them in the right way i say that to my kids when i
16:25was coaching when
16:25i'm teaching uh you know you have to follow the rules and if you don't like the rules how do
16:30we go
16:30about fixing the rules and how do we make the rules better and right now with where the landscape
16:34of college football is it's trickling down into high school where it's not about pageantry and
16:40homecoming it's about playing at the best schools or being at the best places but you can't argue
16:45with that either so again i'm not mad at kids when they where they want to play or what they
16:49want to do
16:50it's the fact that the kids are impacted and the adults are causing the kids to be impacted uh you
16:56know i don't know what the solution is but i will know this i think there needs to be a
16:59set standards and there needs to be a system where people can um if they don't like a rule
17:05how do you go about approaching the rule as a whole right we go in this as a whole and
17:09that's
17:09what for me that's osha and osha's got a you know the thing with you know glenville how does that
17:15come
17:15apart how does that come to light the week of the playoffs things like that it's the timing of things
17:20it's the how things work and the uh you know going back and forth you can play you can't play
17:25there
17:25has to be a set standard that is kept that everybody knows if you pass this you're going
17:31to get your you're going to get a penalty but there's also got to be for me we don't like
17:36this
17:36rule how do we go about changing it as a whole and right now that's you know it's like college
17:41football for me it's the wild wild west right now you do whatever you want uh to win football games
17:46and i'm not against that but there's got to be a governing body and there's got to be something
17:50that kind of puts it down the same path there's too many people too many adults doing their own
17:54thing and what's happening in college is in my opinion tricking down to high school which takes
17:58it away for you know takes away from what it should be about which is young people and that's that's
18:04unfortunate i don't have a better answer for you than that earl but i just know there has to be
18:08a set
18:08standard and there has to be the thought where the kids are come first and adults say that
18:14sometimes that they don't do it kids have to be the priority you have kids at glenville right now
18:19that don't get to play i don't really care what else happened how it happened um but right now they
18:25don't get to play and when people say well they didn't live there well okay i i don't know any
18:29of
18:29that i don't have any privy to that i don't know what happened but i know there's a 16 17
18:33year old
18:34kid who loves playing football doesn't get to play and that's because of the decision of adults and
18:38that that bothers me so i don't know the answer but uh i'm hoping that they push towards getting
18:43something um streamlined here soon coach i gotta let you go i know we got to get to a 2020
18:48but i think
18:48that was a perfect answer so i guess i'll end with a real quick statement and maybe me and you
18:52can
18:52pick this conversation up at a later time but when you when you point out the timing of it i
18:56did think
18:57that was very weird and to your point kids are being impacted by decisions and i think that when
19:02you know whoever's in charge look at this you need to consider that not every kid has a stable situation
19:08not every kid has a stable residence that they can call go to and call home you don't know what
19:13they're going through in their everyday life and to take away the one outlet the one break in their
19:19reality that they have because of something that they have nothing to do with or no control over
19:24it's absolutely ridiculous coach never change man i'll catch you on the other side
19:28see you guys have a good one thanks for having me guys all right take care man
19:32you
