‘In the past, we were too small to enter the Chinese market.’
Slovenian supplement maker Biostile is at the ninth China International Import Expo in Shanghai, hoping to turn a supply relationship into two-way trade.
Around a quarter of its ingredients already come from China. Now it wants to export finished products back.
Chief executive Dalibor Kosmina says expanded production capacity has made that realistic. In Shanghai, the company is looking for distributors, working out regulatory requirements and assessing which products could appeal to Chinese consumers.
CGTN's Aljosa Milenkovic reports from Slovenia's famous Karst region.

00:00Set against Slovenia's highland Karst Plateau, this factory in the common region is where BioSteele develops, tests, manufactures and packages
00:10its products.
00:12Around one quarter of the ingredients used here are imported from China.
00:17But the company now wants that flow to work both ways, exporting its finished Slovenian products into China.
00:24In the past, I think we were too small to enter the Chinese market, but now we invest a lot
00:32in the production capacity and now we are ready also with technology and with the production capacity to enter the
00:41Chinese market.
00:43BioSteele employs around 350 people across several countries, combining manufacturing capacity with in-house research.
00:51Among the results of that know-how is its patented micro-encapsulation technology, designed to protect active ingredients and improve
01:00their stability, delivery and absorption.
01:03It is a technology they believe can compete globally.
01:07At CIIE, BioSteele is looking for distributors, regulatory guidance and information about which formulations are best suited to Chinese consumers.
01:17What is taking shape on this production line is part of a much broader effort, helping more Slovenian companies turn
01:25interest in China into actual exports, while also building a stronger and more balanced trading relationship.
01:33Business development agency Spirits Slovenia coordinates that effort.
01:38With their help, 13 Slovenian companies are exhibiting at this year's CIIE, almost twice the number of last year.
01:46A further 17 are attending to network.
01:48The industries that are mostly innovative and that are the ones that could play a major role also for Chinese
01:55companies, of course, are healthcare, biotechnology.
02:00Pharma is something that is also really developing in Slovenia with also having some of the most important products from
02:09big pharma companies with innovation hubs being built in Slovenia.
02:14Slovenia is one of the world's most innovative economies, ranking ninth in the world for the complexity of its products.
02:21For BioSteele, success in Shanghai would mean converting their innovations into approvals, distribution contracts and eventually commercial orders from China.
