Why does our mind seem to remember difficult experiences more easily than happy ones?

In this insightful clip from his 2018 talk at SACAR, Pondicherry, Pulkit Sharma, Clinical Psychologist, Psychoanalytic Therapist, Spiritual Counselor and Author, explores the fascinating relationship between emotional memory and the human mind.

If we observe ourselves over the course of a single day, we may notice that worries, negative thoughts and difficult memories often arise more spontaneously than positive emotions.

Yet when we step back and look at the story of an entire life, something interesting emerges. Life is rarely defined by difficult experiences alone. It is usually a mixture of joy, connection, achievement, loss, disappointment and many ordinary moments of well-being.

So why does our mind sometimes give difficult experiences a louder voice?

Pulkit Sharma shares a simple everyday example. A person may be feeling perfectly fine, perhaps even happy and relaxed, when they switch on the television and watch a sad movie. Suddenly, they may find themselves pulled into an intense emotional space, with memories and feelings from the past coming to the surface.

Perhaps emotional memory does not simply record life.
Perhaps some experiences continue to speak much louder than others.

Learning to observe this tendency of the mind can help us understand our emotional experiences with greater awareness, rather than simply being carried away by them.

00:00if we note down in a single day how many positive emotions come up spontaneously in our mind
00:06and how many negative emotions, in all likelihood the result will be more of negative emotions.
00:17And so that's something about our memory and mind that it more so dwells upon the negative
00:27emotions than the positive ones. If we really write a very good biography of our life, we
00:34will actually realize that yes, it has been a decent mixture of both. But the mind is like
00:41more cued towards the pain aspect. And interestingly what happens is there are so many times when
00:50we are otherwise feeling normal, we are otherwise feeling good. You know that you may be quite
00:57happy, you may want to relax and you simply switch on your television and you start watching
01:02a movie. And the movie is a very sad one. And all of a sudden it will take you on
01:08a very
01:08sad trip and it will bring up all you know some very intense pain from the past. It can
01:16also happen that at times you are just you know doing something very normally and as
01:22a sudden flash something very disturbing would come up you know. So another thing about the
01:28negative emotions is that when they come up they really unsettle us you know they lead
01:37to a kind of chaos and they kill our you know feeling of well-being that has been there and
01:43they kind of you know make us regress.
