00:00 In Ecuador, both counties on Sunday were in Sunday's early general elections, authorities
00:13 raised their turnout at 82 percent.
00:18 In Guatemala, citizens went to the polls to elect their next president.
00:24 And in Spain, authorities reported that firefighters made progress in their fight against the wildfire
00:29 raging in Tenerife.
00:35 Hello welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisual Studios in Havana,
00:40 Cuba.
00:41 We begin with the news.
00:53 In Ecuador, both counties continued in Sunday's general elections.
00:56 In a press conference, the president of the National Electoral Council, Diana Antemain,
01:01 praised the work of the police and the military who safeguarded the electoral process.
01:05 The high electoral official reported a turnout of over 80 percent.
01:09 Antemain added that preliminary results will begin to come in after 7.30 p.m. local time.
01:16 The president of the National Electoral Council also informed of several attacks against digital
01:21 platforms in foreign countries that hamper voting abroad.
01:24 The official said the necessary measures have been taken to ensure the final results.
01:30 We thank and congratulate the Ecuadorian people for coming here.
01:48 We are also very thankful and celebrate the job the military forces do today, which guarantee
01:58 security throughout the election days, guaranteeing that it's a peaceful day when people can go
02:06 and cast their votes peacefully.
02:11 The participation of Ecuadorians on today's election days has been over 82 percent.
02:28 In Guatemala, the presidential runoff continues.
02:30 So far, no more polling stations suggest a modest turnout.
02:34 After casting her ballot, the president of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, Irma Palencia,
02:38 made several statements to the press and affirmed that the day advances without any major incidents.
02:42 For the moment, the influx of people to the voting centers suggests a modest popular participation.
02:47 However, authorities were expecting that during the course of the day more citizens would
02:52 join in and turn out to vote.
02:54 Voters are called to choose between the former first lady, Sandra Torres Casanova, or the
02:59 academic Bernardo Ardebalot de Leon.
03:05 In Guatemala, the president of the Electoral Board of the Department of Guatemala, Alvaro
03:09 Bravo, reported earlier on the electoral turnout.
03:15 The highest turnout has been seen in the municipality of Misco as of noon.
03:20 The last report I have is that over 186,000 voters have come out to vote, which is more
03:27 or less 14.5 percent of the electoral roll under the responsibility of the Electoral
03:32 Board of the Guatemala Department.
03:37 Citizens in Guatemala gave their opinion on the four axes necessary for the presidency,
03:42 while members of the Departmental Electoral Board indicated they hope to reach a turnout
03:46 level of over 80 percent.
03:49 For the presidency, it is education, health, roads, and also security.
03:56 Those are the four axes for a presidency.
04:01 That they offer anything else, that for me, it's corruption, because where the hell are
04:05 they going to get all that money from?
04:11 I think we have a lot of positive things today.
04:14 We have an excellent day, as you can see.
04:17 I think that this is not going to be an obstacle for someone to say, "Look, I didn't get out,"
04:22 or "It's been a bit cold."
04:24 It is going to rain.
04:26 We hope that maybe at the end of the day, the situation will change.
04:30 But as you can hear, another polling station with 25 percent of voters, this is a party.
04:37 In Haiti, more than 2,400 deaths from violence have been recorded from January 1st to August
04:43 15th of this year.
04:45 The death toll from extreme brutality by gangs in Haiti between January and mid-August has
04:49 risen to around 2,439, according to a report released Friday by the United Nations.
04:55 During this period, another 902 people were injured and 951 have been kicked out.
05:00 Amid a rising widespread violence linked to a combination of factors, including the political
05:04 instability and economic crisis the country is experiencing, spokesperson for the United
05:09 Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ramina Chandrasekhar, reiterated the UN's
05:15 calls for urgent security action to send a multinational force to support the Haitian
05:20 police.

05:36 Welcome back from the South.
05:41 In Russia, the Anti-Aircraft Defense managed to neutralize a new Ukrainian Kamikaze drone
05:46 attack on a military unit near the settlement of Novosyakhshtyn.
05:49 The territory's governor, Vasily Golubev, reported that the radio-electronic warfare
05:53 systems worked effectively and managed to shoot down the three unmanned aerial vehicles
05:59 launched from Ukrainian-controlled territory.
06:02 He also noted that two of the drones were shot down in a military unit in the city of
06:06 Kamensk.
06:07 The third was found about a kilometer from the town of Novosyakhshtyn.
06:11 The official added that the incident caused no structural damage and no casualties or
06:16 injuries were reported.
06:22 On Sunday, Russia's space agency said that preliminary data indicates the automatic Luna
06:27 25 spacecraft might have crashed into the moon.
06:31 Earlier, Roscosmos Agency had reported an emergency as the spacecraft tried to enter
06:36 pre-landing orbit ahead of a planned Monday landing.
06:39 Roscosmos lost contact with the unmanned spacecraft and efforts to locate it and establish communications
06:45 with it on August 19 and 20 yielded zero results.
06:49 Moscow was hoping to make history in a race to be the first country to make a soft landing
06:54 on the moon's icy South Pole.
06:56 The agency added that a special interdepartmental commission is already investigating the cause
07:01 of the Russian lunar spacecraft crash.
07:22 Spanish authorities confirmed on Sunday that firefighters made progress in their fight
07:26 against the wildfire raging in Tenerife.
07:29 Local officials added that so far the fire has a perimeter of 70 kilometers, it has devastated
07:34 8,400 hectares, just over 4 percent of the total area of Tenerife, and has forced the
07:39 evacuation of more than 12,000 people.
07:42 The fire started on Tuesday in a mountainous area of northeastern Tenerife and quickly
07:47 became the largest in the history of the Canary Islands.
07:51 Monser Roman, technical head of the operation, said firefighters' nighttime operations
07:56 focused mainly on defending infrastructure and homes on the northern flank of the fire.
08:02 Roman added that there had been no further evacuations or confinement orders.
08:06 "Of course we are scared because we don't know what's happening, right?
08:14 Everyone's saying something but like a real, I don't know, we don't have news, we don't
08:19 have television here so I don't see that.
08:21 But I'm hopeful that everything will be okay.
08:24 Of course that it's scary to see the fire and smoke but I know it's in forest and I
08:30 know that everyone will do everything to keep it down and yes.
08:35 So I hope that more information will come and we will know better."
08:39 "I come here for holiday and has been here for around two weeks but then all of a sudden
08:47 the fire came up and then it seems to spread very quickly in the first 24 hours and it's
08:55 covered a large, large area.
08:59 And we were staying somewhere near Tacaronte so before the fire it was not on our direction
09:07 but last night the wind was very strong and the direction changed and it seems the fire
09:13 starts to spread."
09:16 The U.S. Navy has sent warships to support the safe evacuation of ships in San Diego
09:21 Bay due to Hurricane Hillary.
09:23 In a statement, U.S. Third Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Michael Boyle informed that the
09:27 mission is to guarantee the safety of the sailors and ships in the bay.
09:31 He said all necessary measures have been taken to avoid serious damage to the infrastructure
09:35 and the ships of the Third Fleet.
09:37 The commander explained that one aircraft carrier and two ships are already out of the
09:42 bay.
09:47 Hurricane Hillary brought heavy rains on Saturday to parts of Mexico's Baja California Peninsula
09:52 and the southwestern United States.
09:55 Officials warned that the powerful hurricane could cause catastrophic and potentially deadly
09:58 flooding.
09:59 The storm weakened on Saturday and dropped from Category 4 to Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson
10:05 scale but was still capable of causing major damage.
10:09 Hurricane conditions are expected to continue along the Baja California coast on Sunday.
10:15 The storm is expected to weaken to a tropical storm before reaching southern California
10:20 and southern Nevada, with heavy rain and flooding still possible.
10:27 In Australia, Spain's women's national football team won the 2023 FIFA World Cup after beating
10:33 England.
10:34 In a match played on Sunday, the Spanish women positioned themselves as world champions with
10:39 the only goal of the match scored by Olga Garmona.
10:42 This is the first victory for the women's national team, and they are now on a par with
10:47 the men's team, who also won the world title at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
10:53 England captain Millie Bright said the defeat was "really hard to take".
10:57 Spain's one-nil victory over England is a football miracle.
11:01 It is an unforgettable moment because this Spain has been built in a short time, in less
11:07 than a decade, and in the role it was in, there was nothing before.

11:39 Welcome back from the south.
11:41 Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel arrived on Sunday in Angola to complete an official
11:46 visit to the African country.
11:48 At the Equador de Febrero International Airport, the President was welcomed by the Angolan
11:53 Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dete Antonio, on the island's ambassador to this African
11:58 nation, Esther Armenteros.
12:01 Local media have echoed the visit of the Cuban head of state, which the press has described
12:05 as a further step in strengthening bilateral cooperation.
12:09 According to the Angolan Press Agency, during his stay in Rwanda, the President will hold
12:14 talks with his counterpart, Joao Lorenzo, and will address the National Assembly, and
12:19 is expected to sign several agreements.

12:30 The military chief of the Nigerian National Homeland Defense Council, General Abdurahmane
12:35 Chiani, warned the economic community of West African states of his country's military
12:40 response capabilities.
12:41 The junta's leader addressed the country after holding a meeting with ECOWAS Commissioner
12:46 for Political Affairs and Peace, Abdel Fattah Moussa.
12:50 Although there, he ratified that the intention is not to seize power and that there will
12:55 be a transition that will not last more than three years.
12:58 He assured that attacking Niger militarily would not be a walk in the park.
13:03 In his televised speech, he accused the community organization of serving as a platform to attack
13:08 his country in collaboration with a foreign army.
13:16 Several thousand people rallied in Niamayu, Niger, in support of the military junta, which
13:21 announced it is considering a transition of no more than three years as the threat of
13:25 a West African military intervention still looms over Niger.
13:29 Niger's new military ruler said on Saturday that a transition of power would not go beyond
13:34 three years, and warned that any attack on the country would not be easy for those involved.
13:39 Chiani's warning came after an ECOWAS delegation arrived in the country for a final diplomatic
13:45 push before deciding whether to take military action against the country's new rulers.
13:50 In his 12-minute speech, Chiani denounced what he called the illegal and inhuman sanctions
13:55 imposed by ECOWAS against Niger.
13:58 He also announced three days of national dialogue to draw up concrete proposals to lay the foundations
14:03 of a new constitutional life.
14:10 On Saturday, a team from the European Union that is observing the upcoming elections in
14:14 Zimbabwe denied a report published by a state-run newspaper accusing them of being involved
14:19 in a bribery scandal.
14:21 Waters in the South African country ruled since independence in 1980 by the ruling
14:26 ZANU-PF party, who voted on August 23 to elect a president.
14:31 Legislators and local government councillors citing anonymous sources, the Herald newspaper
14:36 reported on Friday that an EU media team had met with 18 journalists and handed out whiskey
14:42 and shopping vouchers to influence the journalists to make outlandish claims, intended to tarnish
14:48 the entire electoral process.
14:50 The EU election observation mission stated that these accusations were based on fabricated
14:55 rumours.
14:56 It also described previous attempts to discredit its mission and concluded that such stories
15:01 were blatantly misinformation of the Zimbabwean population.
15:09 Dozens of mass graves have been discovered in Darfur, western Sudan.
15:14 Humanitarian organisations claim they contain more than a thousand corpses.
15:17 The announcement was made by Marceline Rijka, regional emergency director of the International
15:22 Rescue Committee.
15:24 She affirms that this is one of the bloodiest episodes of violence in the history of the
15:29 region.
15:30 Darfur has been, for decades, the scene of heavy ethnic clashes, now aggravated by the
15:34 conflict that broke out in April between the army and parliamentary groups.
15:39 Last July, the same organisation and other agencies, allied with the United Nations,
15:43 confirmed the discovery of 87 corpses in the same area.
15:51 In Ethiopia, over 1,400 people have died as a result of the interruption of humanitarian
15:57 aid agreed by the US International Development Agency.
16:01 An alleged case of corruption in the distribution of food for the Tigray region led to the decision
16:06 of the Washington office, which was supporting the World Food Programme.
16:10 According to an investigation coordinated by the Acting Commission of Tigray Government
16:14 that was evidence of food diversion, local agency officials are implicated in the corruption
16:19 scandal and could have affected the lives of over 300,000 people.
16:24 However, USAID's punitive measures have cost the lives of some 1,400 people who died of
16:30 starvation.
