00:10York Yankees, Susan Waldman joins us.
00:13Of course, the Yankees are having a really nice season, much better than last year.
00:17So it's a lot more fun to talk to Susan Waldman about that than it is a team that doesn't
00:21make the postseason, potentially.
00:22Hey, Susan, great to have you here on the show.
00:24Thanks for coming on.
00:25Thank you.
00:26It hasn't been great the last couple of days, but yeah, it's been a fun season.
00:31But you know what happens at the end of June, you know, what's the saying, Bill Parcells
00:35always used to say to me, depth is great until you have to use it.
00:38And we've gotten to that point now with the bullpen and people, depth is terrific till
00:43you have to use it every day.
00:45Yeah, yeah, it is.
00:46And the good thing about the Yankees, they could just go out and get some other players
00:49if they need to.
00:50You know, before we get to the Yankees, I want to ask you about this transition in the
00:53booth.
00:54I mean, I don't know how you feel about change, but this is the first change that you've had
00:58in radio for so long with John Sterling retiring, you know, certainly, you know, a long and
01:03storied career, your partner in the booth for such a long time.
01:06How has the transition been for you?
01:08Well, it's well, because it's so many people and so many different times, you really don't
01:13know.
01:14And there's people wandering in and out.
01:16And I forget and I'm not good with spreadsheets.
01:18So I never know who's sitting there until I walk in the booth.
01:22It's great.
01:23I mean, I have audition time for an awful lot of young broadcasters.
01:27And how do I like change?
01:28I'm an old get off my lawn person.
01:30I hate change.
01:31But, you know, it's inevitable and it's kind of fun.
01:34I mean, it's kind of fun to see because there is a new style and there's a new kind of broadcaster
01:40thing.
01:41And I'm learning from them as they're learning from me.
01:44And by the way, I'm still there.
01:45So I could I could get to say, I'm sorry, you don't do that.
01:49That's what I do.
01:52It's really it's really different.
01:53But you know what, Craig, to be honest, sometimes it's really good when there's change because
01:58it forces you to grow and it forces you to get out of your own little tunnel of how you
02:04look at things, because there's a whole other world out there.
02:07And if one guy sees it this way, maybe I should take a look at it and see what I can glean
02:13out of that, too.
02:14So it's actually been a lot of fun for me.
02:16I really like it a lot.
02:18Yeah, the only thing I have to stop you when they said you should be learning from them,
02:21I don't think so.
02:22Well, no, no, no, no, no.
02:25I'm not going to learn about broadcast.
02:27I'm not going to learn about broadcasting from them.
02:30But I see that a different generation looks at the game.
02:33We don't see the same games all the time.
02:35And I look at it, you know, I love information as well as everybody, but I see people.
02:39I don't see numbers.
02:41And that is something that, you know, if you listen to younger broadcasters, that that
02:46comes up a lot.
02:47And there's a lot of that there.
02:49And this is radio.
02:50So if I can teach a younger broadcaster that this isn't television, they can't see it.
02:56You've got to talk with your heart.
02:58And you've got to they have to listen to you and really respond to you.
03:03You can't information over the radio too much, your head will blow up, it'll explode.
03:10And everybody comes in and everybody is so energetic and they want to prove that they
03:14can do this.
03:15And it's great.
03:16And, you know, after a while, you calm down and you start watching the game and not showing
03:22people what you know.
03:23But it's terrific.
03:24And I do have to remember that they are doing this in the biggest market in the world.
03:30And it's very tough for every single one of them.
03:32So I'm trying to be as helpful as I can.
03:36Yep. Don't drown me in data.
03:37That's what I've heard for radio.
03:39I get that part. All right.
03:40I know we only have a couple of minutes here as we end the show, Susan.
03:44But the Yankees certainly have been a formidable force for the majority of the season.
03:47Soto has been a great acquisition.
03:48Judge has been fantastic and some nice contributors as well.
03:51Heal's done a good job.
03:52Cole is back too.
03:53Yeah.
03:54And I think that they just need some bullpen help.
03:56And these pitchers have to start going a little longer in games so you don't blow out the
04:00next group.
04:01And that you were kidding about that.
04:03But that is something that the Yankees can do is that they can go on out.
04:06They can replace their mistakes.
04:08And that is something that most teams cannot do.
04:11But everybody's looking for bullpen arms and everybody's looking for another starter.
04:15So I'm not quite sure it's going to work out.
04:18But the addition of Juan Soto has been eye-opening for this team in a lot of ways.
04:23You'll see walks have gone up and foul tips have gone up because they are looking at Soto.
04:28And because Soto bats right in front of Aaron Judge, Aaron Judge is having another monster
04:34season.
04:35It has been great.
