00:00:15From the seminar "Money, My Family and God", Father Ernesto María Caro presents the topic "Money and the Economy",
00:00:23where it shows us how Jesus in his teachings praises the faithful steward who fulfills his mission

00:00:33Furthermore, it tells us that we must earn money honestly, use it generously, spend it wisely, and invest it carefully.

00:00:59I want to touch on a topic that I think is also, as I mentioned before we began our discussion,
00:01:13Another issue that I find very sensitive is the issue of the economy.
00:01:16And I believe that, in a very special way, in the times we are living in,
00:01:22This issue involves insecurity, economic insecurity, and great volatility in the markets.
00:01:31where, well, one day we have a job and then economic situations change and everything gets modified,
00:01:37Well, I think it is very sensitive, very important that we can review it from the perspective of Sacred Scripture,
00:01:46Listen to what the Holy Spirit has said about this topic, which is the economy.
00:01:52Money, therefore, is a broad and very important topic in the Bible.
00:01:59Just to give you an idea of how important this is in human life and for God,
00:02:05in the gospels we call synoptic, that is, Saint Matthew, Saint Mark, and Saint Luke,
00:02:12One in six verses speaks either about money or possessions.
00:02:19You can see that it's no small matter.
00:02:24One out of every six verses has to do with possessions or has to do directly with money.
00:02:33Moreover, twelve of the thirty-eight parables that Jesus told us in the gospels
00:02:40They also play one of these two songs.
00:02:43So, if we take this as a basis, from this perspective, it's incredible that Jesus talked more about money.
00:02:53than heaven, hell, and eternal life.
00:02:59Jesus spoke more about possessions and money than about the kingdom, heaven, or hell.
00:03:09This gives us an idea that it truly is a sensitive issue and an important theme in the New Testament.
00:03:19It's a topic we don't usually delve into.
00:03:22Generally speaking, the Christian life, especially as we have been living it,
00:03:27because he is constantly working on the conversion part.
00:03:33We are looking for a spiritual life, as when we looked at, for example, the topic of holiness.
00:03:37These are fundamental topics, but strictly religious, strictly spiritual.
00:03:45Even the topic we discussed last year, married life, has strong connotations
00:03:51from a spiritual point of view.
00:03:54And so, this topic, ordinarily, when there is no long and systematic training,
00:04:00It is usually left out.
00:04:02Why? Well, we never got to that topic.
00:04:05We sometimes dwell on the topic of conversion.
00:04:09In many Christian movements and organizations, particularly in the Catholic Church,
00:04:16We experience what I've mentioned before, what happened to me and, well, my classmates at school,
00:04:23Since the first year of high school, we've been using English This Way, number one.
00:04:31And, well, we didn't finish watching it, because, well, the teacher was absent, it was a filler class, right?, English in high school.
00:04:38And then, the second year, well, again, I still remember the cover perfectly,
00:04:43And I remember the book, it was a green book.
00:04:45English This Way 2 was blue.
00:04:48We never saw it.
00:04:50The second year we looked at the same book, and we didn't finish it again.
00:04:54We saw him again the third year, and we didn't finish him.
00:04:58I went on to high school, and we went back to taking English This Way, number one.
00:05:02And so that you don't get too confused, we didn't even finish the verb "to do," right? I mean, how to use it.
00:05:09It's incredible that, having spent five years learning English,
00:05:14Well, anyone who wanted to learn English must have done it one way or another.
00:05:18because the school didn't give us the opportunity.
00:05:22And sometimes this happens to us in our church.
00:05:24There we go and review the catechism, and then we go back to another movement,
00:05:28And then the catechism again, and then the catechism again,
00:05:31And so, we only see the fundamental aspects of the conversion,
00:05:36and all other topics that are involved with the Christian life,
00:05:41with the Christian life lived in the family, which has to do with children,
00:05:46the Christian life that has to do with my wife,
00:05:50the Christian life that has to do with the marital relationship,
00:05:53The Christian life, which, as we see, has paramount importance in the Bible,
00:05:57What is economics? Well, those topics, we never see them, right?
00:06:01In other words, they're left a little bit unsaid.
00:06:05Given this importance, Sacred Scripture provides us with a series of elements for judgment,
00:06:10It offers us principles and truths,
00:06:12that when implemented as policies, programs, and individual conduct,
00:06:17They shape both the behavior and the economic condition of men and society.
00:06:22Depending on how man interprets, understands, and accepts what God has placed in Sacred Scripture,
00:06:31That will tremendously, I would like to use the word, seriously, determine our societies.
00:06:38I'm currently reading a book that I don't even want to continue reading.
00:06:44It is a book that tells us how the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit were founded.
00:06:50And so they are born in the midst of the revolution, in the pre-revolution, and then they develop during the revolution.
00:06:57And well, this man, the one writing this, a priest of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit,
00:07:02It's clear he really likes the topic of the history of the revolution
00:07:05and provides a series of very well-documented facts and details
00:07:09because the book has a lot of critical apparatus,
00:07:11In other words, everything is documented
00:07:12And it really is incredible
00:07:16how those whom we today consider the heroes of our revolution,
00:07:21Well, they really have very little of that, right?
00:07:24They didn't really fight for the Mexico that we all want.
00:07:29but by themselves, right?
00:07:32They were fighting each other, Villa against Carranza, Carranza against Zapata,
00:07:36They were all against each other, just trying to gain power.
00:07:40I read a passage yesterday that impressed me greatly, about how in one of the battles,

00:07:49And he shot all the survivors.
00:07:52I mean, they're Mexican, right?
00:07:54So, that's why there's so much talk about how revolutions are truly fratricidal wars, right?
00:07:59And so, we see there how the constitution of people who, well, were supposed to be Catholic,
00:08:07Well, it has nothing to do with politics and what Christian economics is really about, right?
00:08:14So, well, we see then how this thought,
00:08:19Economic thought also has a strong connotation,
00:08:24It has deep roots in our beliefs, in our faith,
00:08:29Depending on what we believe, then, it will be largely
00:08:32how we will manage our economy.
00:08:35It is vitally important that we take three considerations into account.
00:08:42First, the word economy is derived from the word oiconomos,
00:08:47In other words, the house rules.
00:08:50It has to do with order, it has to do with discipline.
00:08:55especially from our homes.
00:08:57The economy, the economos, therefore, has a direct connection to our own home.
00:09:06And from there it spreads to society.
00:09:09A poor domestic economy will ultimately lead to a poor social economy.
00:09:16A second element that we need to consider when dealing with this topic
00:09:20The fall of man laid the foundation for the misuse of talents.
00:09:26and the abandonment of responsibilities that resulted from the perversion of man's stewardship.
00:09:32That is, the man who had been entrusted with ruling over all of creation,
00:09:37as we read in both the first and second chapters of Genesis,
00:09:42Man is responsible, whether in the first chapter of all creation
00:09:48or in the second chapter, then, represented in these images presented to us in chapter two
00:09:56with the garden.
00:09:57He had to respect the rules, the regulations that God had established.
00:10:01for the order and proper functioning of paradise.
00:10:06Sin, therefore, makes all of this meaningless.
00:10:10And so, from there, we can say that sin is the origin of bad economies.
00:10:16because it has to do precisely with selfishness.
00:10:20Man stops thinking about the laws established by the Creator
00:10:25to begin establishing their own laws in all areas,
00:10:29especially in the field of administration, in the field of economics.
00:10:36This shows us, then, the importance of spiritual life in our own lives
00:10:41if we truly want to have healthy economies
00:10:44and above all according to the principles that God has dictated
00:10:48for the use and handling of goods according to what He created them.
00:10:53Biblical economics, the third element to consider,
00:10:57The biblical economy provides a Magna Carta of responsibilities.
00:11:02divinely assigned, tempered by periodic warnings against sin
00:11:08and calls men to honor God in economic activities.
00:11:13So, as we've said about all the topics,
00:11:19Well, this cannot be left out.
00:11:21Holy Scripture remains the Magna Carta for our economy.
00:11:27People who don't know God will say,
00:11:30God, what does He have to say to us about the things that refer to
00:11:33directly and exclusively to the management of man?
00:11:36Well, he has a lot to say, because God put us in charge.
00:11:40And sin destroyed this conception that we would naturally have for order
00:11:47And so now we have to abide by the principles
00:11:51that the Lord has been giving us throughout history
00:11:55so that we can govern properly
00:11:58all this world that He has placed in our hands.
00:12:03Let's begin then with our topic
00:12:06And we ask ourselves, are money and wealth bad?
00:12:12It's something that sometimes resonates with us a little.
00:12:16And we think of the poor Jesus, of the poor Saint Francis of Assisi,
00:12:21in which the Lord says that we must leave absolutely everything behind
00:12:24to follow Him.
00:12:26Well, I don't think we should talk much about this.
00:12:29because I believe we have had the experience in the Jordan
00:12:33when we made our voucher there
00:12:36where we put, or had to put, everything
00:12:40And we saw how it churns inside us, right?
00:12:43In other words, it's not something where we can just say, well,
00:12:46Everything's done and it's gone, right?
00:12:47It's not an easy thing.
00:12:49And then we can start to think
00:12:51that riches or money are bad things.
00:12:55We must begin then
00:12:57with an experience we all shared.
00:13:01First, money has a mysterious power over man.
00:13:06It attracts us, it fascinates us,
00:13:09It drives us to almost every vice that exists in the world.
00:13:14It makes us vain, proud, and selfish.
00:13:18Then the apostle Paul writes to the apostle Timothy
00:13:22in his first letter, chapter 6, verse 10,
00:13:28saying the following.
00:13:29Because the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
00:13:38Love of money, not money itself, mind you.
00:13:41The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
00:13:46Through coveting it, some have strayed from the faith
00:13:49and many unpleasant experiences have been caused.
00:13:52There's something about money that, you say, is bad.
00:13:58No, if we didn't have money,
00:14:00We wouldn't have a home, we wouldn't have food,
00:14:02we wouldn't be able to transport ourselves,
00:14:03we wouldn't be able to do absolutely anything in our lives.
00:14:06And yet,
00:14:08has a root there
00:14:09that attracts us,
00:14:12that makes us look for it.
00:14:13To seek it, to love it, to have it,
00:14:19Well, it's the root at the bottom of everything we experience today.
00:14:24all this insecurity
00:14:25and all the ills that we suffer in our society today.
00:14:29If you look closely,
00:14:31Its origin is wool,
00:14:34wanting to have more money.
00:14:36However, on the other hand,
00:14:39God is pleased when man progresses,
00:14:42that using properly
00:14:44from what he himself has given him,
00:14:46can progress economically.
00:14:50Jesus told a parable about this subject,
00:14:53the parable of the talents.
00:14:55In this parable that we find
00:14:57in Matthew 25, 19, 20
00:15:00and its parallels,
00:15:02In this parable Jesus congratulates
00:15:06to the one who used the money properly
00:15:09and that multiplied it,
00:15:12He likes it.
00:15:14And to those who didn't,
00:15:15on the contrary,
00:15:17He disliked it.
00:15:20Verse 19 says,
00:15:23After a long time, the Lord returned to those servants.
00:15:26and settled accounts with them.
00:15:29The one who had received the five thousand coins
00:15:31She arrived with the other five thousand.
00:15:34Lord said,
00:15:35Did you order five thousand coins from me?
00:15:37Look,
00:15:38I've earned another five thousand.
00:15:41His Lord answered him,
00:15:43Did you do the right thing?
00:15:45good and faithful servant?
00:15:47You have been faithful in little things,
00:15:48I'll put you in charge
00:15:49much more.
00:15:52Come and share
00:15:53the happiness of your Lord.

00:16:56good servants
00:16:57and faithful
00:16:58and it will give us much more

00:17:06that's right,
00:17:07that when the Lord
00:17:08find a good manager
00:17:10that he doesn't use the money
00:17:12simply to enrich themselves
00:17:14and treasure it,
00:17:15The Lord multiplies him
00:17:17immensely his fortune
00:17:19because he knows that this multiplication
00:17:21It will bring many benefits.
00:17:23for all his people.
00:17:25Therefore,
00:17:26highlight a couple of ideas
00:17:28You entrusted me with this task.
00:17:30First,
