00:03How did you make that first million then?
00:05Was it stocks, all tied in in stocks, ownership of the company?
00:09When I started at Right Media, I was just a programmer and I didn't have any equity.
00:13But after, I don't know, six months or something, they were like, wow, you know what you're doing.
00:19We're going to promote you to a CTO and we're going to give you some equity.
00:23And in 2007, we got bought by Yahoo for $850 million.
00:28One of the biggest exits in New York history.
00:31But I very wisely walked into the boardroom before they took the offer and said, you all would be freaking crazy to take this deal.
00:41And so they fired me.

00:45I did make my first million, which was great.
00:47But I was so angry about getting fired that I started AppNexus the second my non-compete was over.
00:54And spent the next four years taking every single customer back from Right Media.
00:59That first million came with a lot of scars and a lot of pain.
01:02Even when you win, it can still be really, really rough.
01:06And so I had a few percent of the company.
01:09And so when it sold, I invested some of that.
01:11Even when they fired me, I still kept a little.
