00:00receivers acting like they're blocking down and then the secondary for the Browns just lose track
00:04of who they have to be covering because they're thinking about their run fits. They're seeing
00:08that eye disguise going in the other direction with the jet sweep motion and then completely
00:12leaving Stoops open in the end zone. Joshua Cardi on to connect the PAT and the Rams have
00:19their first points. They're down 10-7. Dylan Gabriel. Good news is you get to run a two-minute
00:27drive in your first home game with a three-point lead. Live action for two minutes. We'll see how
00:36he can operate, see how he handles the pressure. Ball's going to be taken. It's a wobbly one.
00:41Carter's going to pick it up at the five. Doesn't even make it to the 15 before he gets wrapped up.
00:47I'd like to take a moment to welcome our broadcast affiliates today presented by Ken
00:53Ganley Kia. I want to see you in a Ken Ganley Kia. All our great Ohio affiliates, also our friends
00:58watching on NFL Network nationally and our newest affiliate all the way in Honolulu, Hawaii to check
01:03out one of their favorites, Dylan Gabriel. Yeah, the people at KGMB. They got up at 7 a.m. for kickoff
01:10today. Aloha. Hopefully enjoying some banana macadamia nut pancakes as they're enjoying their boy,
01:18Dylan Gabriel out here in the two-minute drive. Browns with a couple of timeouts. Trevion
01:24Williams into the game in the backfield.
01:31Gabriel to throw. Looks, throws, completes. First down. That is Gage Larvidan with the clock running.
01:39Aditi.
01:40Chris, two not ideal updates. Tight end Blake Whitehart is out with a knee and Pierre
01:45Strong is being evaluated for a concussion right now. All right. Thank you so much. Browns have had
01:51to deal with their share of injuries all preseason long. Another connection that to Deontay Johnson for
01:57the first time. The veteran trying to make it at the back end of the roster. Today's player to watch,
02:05though, presented by Tostitos. Tostitos team bags are backscanned. The QR code to win an epic Browns
02:10game day experience. It's the undrafted rookie free agent out of South Carolina, Gage Larvidan,
02:15who's been great this camp. Gage has had a great camp trying to find a spot on the roster for him,
02:20but with potentially keeping four quarterbacks, it'd be tough to keep six receivers, but he's one of those
02:25guys. He's done such a great job. You almost have to find a spot for him. Gabriel throws. Ooh,
02:30another dangerous pass. Incomplete. He was looking for Larvidan. Gabriel going
02:39back to that sideline with the quick out being run by Gage Larvidan. You gotta be careful going
02:44back to the well two times in a row because those cornerbacks, they're on defense, so they're not as
02:49smart as this offensive guys, but even those guys every now and then they can figure things out and
02:54have an opportunity to maybe jump the play and make a game-changing play for the Rams in two minutes.
02:59Whistles. And a timeout by the Rams.
03:06Charge timeout. Los Angeles. Their second will be 30 seconds.
03:12So we expect to see Dylan Gabriel play into the second half and then Shadur Sanders will make his
03:18home debut and that is going to be very interesting because Shadur Sanders, boy he has had a ton of
03:25fans a groundswell of support ever since really his days at Jackson State. It followed him to Colorado
03:32and then through the draft process which was a wild roller coaster of emotions. I gotta say this
03:38kid has handled himself extremely well since he has come to Cleveland. He has handled himself really well.
03:43What a tough situation thinking that you're going to be one of the top picks in the draft and then
03:48sliding all the way to the fifth round. I think even people that didn't love him coming out didn't
03:52expect that to happen, but he's handled it with grace. He's done a great job handling the competition
03:57with Dylan Gabriel, doing it and saying all the right things and then playing great in his first
04:01opportunity a couple weeks ago. Gabriel across the middle, connects, gets the ball in the Rams territory
04:06and there is Larbadan with a nice connection. Gets it down to the Rams, 47 clock running. Cleveland still with two timeouts.
04:19Gabriel throws, thrash, first down again.
04:26Dylan Gabriel doing a great job with quick decisions, throwing the ball accurately, but he's got to be
04:30careful. He's throwing a lot of out-breaking routes right now and you got to watch for a trap corner
04:35where it looks like the guy you're looking at might be playing man coverage where he can fit it in,
04:39but then they fall off with the outside corner and make a jump on those routes.
04:44Gabriel first and 10, dumps it down. Trevion Williams gets it to the 30 and the Browns utilize their
04:50second timeout. Dylan Gabriel listening to our broadcast, understanding he can't keep picking
04:55apart with the quick outs and throwing it to his running back there, which puts him in field goal range
05:00gives him the opportunity. Charles timeout. Cleveland their second. Well everybody's smarter when they
05:05listen to you. Well I don't know about that, but certainly in that moment he was using his
05:08his big brain. So when they go over that in film, is that something where they say, hey you can get
05:15away with that on one o'clock on a Saturday against the bunch of guys at the back end of the roster,
05:20but that will not work on Sunday? Thank you. Whether it's practice field in Berea or Philadelphia or
05:25out here on game day, like every rep you take is a learning experience, even if it's a great rep,
05:29because in that situation they're like, hey, great throw, we love the decision making, but
05:33now here's the next level, the graduate level of thinking you need to be ready for. It's like,
05:37hey, they're going to adjust on defense. They're not just going to sit in the same coverage. They're
05:41going to look and see what your tendencies are throughout that drive, and then all of a sudden
05:44the guys up in the box are going to say, hey, let's run this coverage, because that can take
05:48advantage of what the quarterback is doing, what he's looking for with his first read. And so just being
05:54nimble at that quarterback position is something you're learning as a rookie.
05:58Gabriel, a ton of experience, an FBS record, 63 starts across three different schools.
06:05Gabriel throws wide open, Sal Cannella for the first time inside the 25.
06:14Cannella, a first-year man out of Auburn. He's done some nice things in the preseason games.
06:19Yeah, Cannella's done a really nice job there. We got Gage Larvedan as the wide receiver out wide
06:26there, of course. That's what they call him, the wide receiver. And just throwing a nice little
06:29pick for Sal Cannella, being able to run towards the sideline. Did you really just say that, by the way?
06:33Well, when I said it, I realized how silly it sounds, but that's why they call it the wide receiver.
06:38But it's a twins, a two-by-two formation, and Dylan Gabriel picking a side, going to it quickly,
06:43being really decisive in the two-minute drill. First to 10, Gabriel over Larvedan.
06:49And that is one of those balls that is dangerous for the receiver. Tanner Engel got a shot on the
06:55undrafted rookie. We've seen a few of those sail on Gabriel. Yeah, that was one that he's going to
07:01want back. He starts to his right, comes back, and I couldn't tell if the ball got tipped at the line
07:06of scrimmage a little bit. That's why it floated kind of high, because that's a dangerous throw. I
07:10think from an offensive standpoint, I like kind of taking a little bit deeper of a shot towards
07:14that middle hash mark part of the field, but when it gets tipped, it leaves your receiver in a
07:20vulnerable position. Second and 10. Brown still with one more timeout to go. They're going to set up a
07:30screen. He's got blockers in front of him. It gets down to the 20, and the Browns will have to use
07:35their last timeout as Trevion Williams was stopped.
07:40Actually, nice job. It looked like the waters were going to part for him and then
07:44quickly swallowed up by the Rams' defense. Yeah, Zach Zinter's out there leading the parade, and
07:50it looked like he didn't really know if he should block the corner and block out or turn back inside
07:54and block the safety, but what they tell the first man out in a screen like that is pick somebody and be
08:00decisive and go block them, because if you're kind of pitter-pattering between two guys and you're not
08:04decisive, the running back doesn't know who the guy is that he owns in that situation, so he's waiting
08:09to play off of your block. You don't make a decisive decision and take somebody, and then all of a
08:13sudden the guy you weren't really paying attention to because you were thinking you're going to get
08:16outside takes out your legs. You should teach a screen class in Madison. Screen blocking 101.
08:23Screen you. The Browns are in the red zone presented by Milkbone. Milkbone bringing
08:28more dog to the dog pound, and the Rams will burn their final timeout.
08:34Los Angeles, their third and final. I got scared, I could tell. All right, I know it's only preseason,
08:40but I'll let you throw in your offensive coordinator cap here in terms of what you're trying to do. Why not?
08:45Let's have a little fun with it. Well, what I'm trying to do here is thinking that I want to see
08:49Bill and Gabriel play out this drive, and so you've got an opportunity where the Rams are thinking
08:55we've got to protect the sticks. It's third down. If we can stop them here, we're going to force a field
09:00goal. We're going to find the Browns. I'm going, hey, we've got the whole field available. We can
09:04throw it for two or three yards, try to gain a yard or two yards after catch, and then be ready for
09:09that quick situation where before you let the Rams substitute or get into a different defense, you get on the line
09:13of scrimmage, and you run a quick quarterback sneaker, you run another play before they have
09:17a chance to get ready. All right, third and seven. No timeouts for either side. Gabriel's seven of nine
09:24for 67 yards on this drive. Gabriel looks left, throws, Thrash connects for the first down inside the five.
09:37Beautiful ball placement and a great job by Thrash to hang on, even after Camp Lampton
09:43lit him up. Great job here by Dylan Gabriel, just layering that throw over that first level of the
09:49defense, but getting it down before the receiver gets hit right at the goal line there. Thrash doing
09:56a great job bringing it in, getting those feet inbounds and giving the Browns an opportunity here
10:01inside the five-yard line.
10:05Browns have first and goal at the three. Williams remains in the backfield. Gage Larvedan back in the game.
10:13Gabriel looks, throws, wide open, Larvedan, touchdown!
10:17Gage Larvedan all by himself in the end zone. Dylan Gabriel going through his progression,
10:31finds his man wide open and makes the easy look easy and routine. Great job by Dylan Gabriel. A couple
10:39misfires during that drive, but he stuck with it. He continued to read the defense and trusted his
10:45arm and trusted what his eyes are showing him and finds Gage Larvedan in the corner of the end zone
10:49for a big touchdown there for the Browns and for Dylan Gabriel to finish that drive the right way.
10:56Dustin Hopkins
11:00and he pulls the PAT
11:02and so the Browns will have to settle for six instead of seven on that drive and a nine-point lead.
11:16All right, that is our Howard Hanna scoring drive. Win big with Howard Hanna, the official real estate
11:22provider of the Cleveland Browns. An impressive 11-play 86-yard drive in a minute 38. Gabriel,
11:29nine of 11 for all 86 yards and it wraps up with a three-yard touchdown toss to a wide open Larvedan.
11:36Yeah, great decision making, great patience back there. That's one of the things that rookies do have
11:41to learn is you've got plenty of time, right? The clock stops when the ball goes out of bounds. You've got
11:47plenty of timeouts. You don't have to be in a rush. You don't have to be panicked. You can take what the
11:50defense gives you because you've got plenty of time to get down the field and give yourself an opportunity
11:56to score a touchdown just like they did right there and so taking a lot of nice easy throws.
12:01The guys that were open distributing the football to multiple players,
12:04finding little windows as the coverage is getting changed from one play to the next.
12:08Really nice drive there by Tony Gabriel.
12:10The ball sails into the end zone and you've got to imagine the Rams will probably take a knee with
12:20no more timeouts. So Gage Larvedan, you know, he was just excited to be on the same field with Joe
12:26Flacco in practice. Earlier this year he tweeted out he caught a tee tee from Mr. Joe Flacco so life is complete.
12:32Not quite. You get to score a touchdown like that in the preseason whether it's from Joe Flacco
12:39or a fellow rookie and Gabriel it doesn't matter man. You love seeing those rookies showing the
12:45vets respect and showing excitement right because I mean everybody that's watching at home these guys
12:50are living our dream. I mean even though I did get to play I still get jealous of what these guys
12:55get to do out here playing in front of a huge crowd. Maybe not huge today but on a normal situation but
13:01it's just such an honor to be able to go wear the orange and brown and the NFL shield and go out and
13:07play a kid's game for a king's ransom. That's what we always said and it's fun to see that joy from these
13:12guys. So Joe Flacco and the first stringers they got on the board early on. Dylan Gabriel in the
13:17backups a couple of scoring drives of their own and so Cleveland will have a 16-7 halftime lead.
13:25Pretty impressive work out of the offenses that just drove up and down the field.
13:29After that first drive first team defense outstanding work albeit against the Rams backups but
13:38Jim Schwartz's defensive side of the football has been absolutely outstanding. Aditi Kinkabuala
13:45standing by with Browns quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave. I am indeed with Coach Musgrave and Coach
13:49Musgrave Joe Flacco. What do fans not necessarily know? What flew under the radar and what you just saw?
13:55Well he's a cool operator that's for sure awfully accurate took a sack which we don't like to do
14:00that especially on second and nine four down territory so there's some corrections to make
14:05even with 40 year old guys. Okay and what about the young guy Dylan Gabriel what's the biggest step
14:10you've seen in him from last week out to today? The young guy avoided the disasters today especially on
14:15that last drive throwing it away when it's not there not taking a sack definitely not throwing it to the
14:20other team. Very important thank you we appreciate the time. All right Aditi thank you we expect
14:26to see more of Gabriel and Shador Sanders at the helm in the second half. Browns lead at 16 to 7. Coming
14:33up next John Doss with the halftime report.
14:39First half stats presented by University Hospitals official health care partner of the Cleveland Browns
14:44and the Browns seem to say this a lot this preseason dominated the first half look at that almost 250
14:50yards of total offense. 17 first downs. Rams had one really good drive to their credit with their kind
14:55of third and fourth stringers but that's one. That's the hall of famer Joe Thomas. I am Chris Rose.
15:00You want to look at a special play I've got for you? Yeah let's do it that sounds fun. Yeah it's
15:03the first half highlight that would be singular if you don't mind. Present by Pet Supplies Plus. Pet Supplies Plus
15:09your home turf for happy pets. All your pets were barking at the TV when Gage Larvedan was this wide
15:15open. Dylan Gabriel did a great job that entire two minute drive. Looking off the coverage in that
15:21situation he looks off the safety gives Gage Larvedan an easy opportunity to make an easy routine catch in
15:27the end zone because the man covering him was following Dylan's eyes. So we expect him to start the
15:33second half and then turn it over to Shador Sanders. Joe Flacco completed his last nine passes had a
15:39touchdown toss to the rookie third rounder Harold Fannin who I think is going to be an awesome weapon.
15:45It was the first time we saw him do something here and it was fun to watch him right just his ability
15:49to separate right he's just such a great athlete he's got those great hands he caught the ball on a
15:54little skinny post into the end zone knowing that he was going to receive some contact pulls it in
15:59holds on to it all the way to the ground just hopefully giving Browns fans a little preview of what
16:05we've got in store for us this season with a couple dynamic pass catchers at tight end.
16:10Well Shador Sanders does have his helmet on Dylan Gabriel does not
16:16I'm no detective oh but I think that means that perhaps Shador is about to enter the game
16:21I thought you were going to say but I play one on tv. No I definitely don't play a lot of roles
16:26that's not one of them that's not one of them. That's a bad kick that's shy of the 20 yard line and so it's
16:32it's it's going to be a problem for the rams.
16:46Randon's on infraction kicking team the ball replaced at the 40 yard line first down and here
16:53comes Shador Sanders for the first time in Cleveland.
17:09Loved by many it has been a national story throughout training camp.
17:14Did not play last week in the win over the Eagles because of an oblique injury but lit up the Carolina
17:23skyline his NFL debut.
17:28And Sanders to throw flushed out of the pocket looking dumps it down and connects with Sal Cannella
17:36for a gain of about five and a half.
17:38So Shador Sanders your quarterback profile presented to you by Huntington Bank in that
17:46season opening win over the Panthers 14-23 almost 140 yards a couple of touchdowns most importantly
17:52did not turn it over that day. And to me that was really the big difference between the two rookie
17:56quarterbacks Dylan Gabriel with the two turnovers credited to him and his start Shador Sanders was
18:01clean with zero in his start. Amani Marshall in the backfield and gets it on second down and gets
18:08nowhere maybe loses a half yard.
18:13So Shador as we mentioned in the first half has done and said all the right things there's been a
18:19lot of people a lot of national shows that have an opinion on where he should be on the depth chart
18:24how many reps he should be getting with certain players and he has just kind of played football.
18:29He's done a great job blocking out the noise you know he's been a superstar since probably high school
18:34and national fans all over the place. It can become a distraction if you allow it but he's just done
18:40a great job showing maturity keeping it about hey i'm just trying to get better i'm just trying to help
18:44the team and he's really been everything the Browns have wanted when they drafted him.
18:49Third and five Sanders is going to run and he will not get to the first down.
18:53picks up maybe a yard and
18:57it'll be three and out for the Browns on their opening drive of the second half.
19:03Protection just not there but good decision by Shador like every drive's not going to end in a
19:08touchdown so you don't have to force it sometimes. The first play of the drive he does a nice job
19:12picking up some yards instead of throwing it away he throws it to Cannella and then the run kind of got
19:18blown up not really great block by the offensive line up front and then a good decision there just
19:24take a look a couple yards try to scramble but let him punt.
19:29End over end Stoops calls for the fair catch right next to a flag.
19:36By the way the refs have made a lineup change as well Brad Allen head referee is going to sit this
19:41half out Chad Hill has taken over. Player out of bounds on a kick number 26 of the kicking team
19:48five yard penalty first down.
20:04And so the Browns they go three and out
20:07on their first drive and now we'll try and tighten it up on D.
20:11This preseason football on News 5 is brought to you by Toyota. For all Toyota offers go to
20:19toyota.com. Toyota let's go places. We welcome in the architect of the Cleveland Browns Andrew
20:26Berry. It's our yearly visit. That's right Chris. How you doing man? I'm doing great. Thank you for
20:31having me. Absolutely. Boy do we have a lot of stuff to talk about. You want to start with quarterbacks?
20:35We can start with quarterbacks. That's no problem. Let's do it. Joe Flacco obviously
20:40named the starter this past week and a lot of people are wondering what's the plan for the
20:45rookies moving forward. How do you balance getting a team ready for a game and developing two rookies
20:51that you drafted on the clock? Well one of the really the two primary responsibilities for our coaching
20:57staff are to prepare the team for the upcoming opponent and simultaneously bring our younger
21:03players along. I know that that has gotten more attention this year just because of the two rookie
21:07quarterbacks but it's something that Kevin and his staff have done a fantastic job of over the past five
21:13years. For our particular situation at the quarterback position I got to give Kevin, Tommy Brees, Bill Musgrave a
21:21lot of credit in terms of how they designed and redesigned practices to make sure that these these young
21:26players behind the scenes can get the reps necessary to improve. What sort of things have they done in
21:31practice to redesign that practice schedule to make sure that those guys are getting the quality reps
21:36that they need to continue their development? That's a great question Joe. I think probably the
21:40the easiest example for anyone who has come out to the training camp practices is our approach with
21:46what we call two spotting. So essentially during seven on seven and some team periods we'll run two
21:52concurrent offensive offensive groups. So essentially you have like almost like a split squad where you
21:59have the two young kids on on one field you have the veterans on the other and you run the same period
22:04concurrently which allows all the players to get the necessary. It's almost a little bit like how
22:07college is running their practice because they've got you know 100 plus guys they've got to have
22:11two practices basically going on at the same time to get the reps that they need. How do you determine
22:16whether or not you're comfortable with one of those guys or both of them being one snap away?
22:21Yeah so first of all we have a lot of belief in both Dylan and both of those guys have had
22:27an excellent preseason today. And a big part of it is like we measure and track everything in
22:33practice you know every throw every decision footwork you name it and we talk about the tangible
22:38progress that we're seeing on a weekly basis. Now nothing is a substitute for competitive game
22:43situations you know whether it's in the preseason and then certainly the regular season so with any
22:48rookie player not just quarterbacks there is a little bit of a leap of faith but we've been able to see
22:53their progress in real time which gives us the confidence for both guys. You always want to see
22:56your great players that are making plays in practice carry that over to game day and as a rookie
23:01that's always a question right are they the same guy in practice that's right as we're going to see
23:05on game day so for those two quarterbacks specifically after tracking and watching them practice
23:10how have you seen that carry over to how they play on game day? Yeah you know Joe you hit the nail on the
23:15head I call it sometimes um sometimes players get stage fright you know not you know maybe not
23:20you know realistically but just how they how they actually perform and it's been great to see
23:25Dylan and Chador perform under the lights um those guys they prepare their tails off and I think the
23:31cooler part is in these uncontrolled settings in games you see the playmaking come out you know Joe you
23:36know there's always a quick whistle in practice for the you know for the quarterbacks they can't get hit
23:40and in these settings it's real football and to see them be able to produce out of structure that's
23:44probably been the most encouraging thing. Browns make a nice play on Schrader
23:50who's trying just to get back to the line of scrimmage good job by Cam Thomas and also Aiden
23:56Huntington who's been a really nice pickup by you uh done some great things on special teams and defense
24:01as well uh let's continue a little bit more with the quarterback situation everybody's saying well the
24:07Browns can't keep four quarterbacks so how do you wrestle with that over the next 72 hours? You know
24:13honestly it's not much of a uh a decision for us um all four guys have done what we've asked
24:19obviously um three of them have dealt with injuries uh throughout their time here but you know the
24:25reality of it is uh 53-man roster yeah great player yeah there you go you can get a little excited
24:31great player that's right Cameron Thomas do your thing you know you have 53 roster spots five are
24:37really developmental or inactive spots um plus post-covid the roster roles are just so much more
24:45flexible that you can build your 48 game day roster um unless you're wiped out from injury like pretty
24:52creatively quarterback it's the most important position in sports um we have a room that that we
24:57like all the guys in there so we don't we don't really see that as a problem we really more see
25:01it as an opportunity so it typically means that if you're keeping four quarterbacks you got to make
25:06some harder decisions in some of those other position rooms is there another position room that
25:12you're looking at and saying hey you got a guy that maybe can play a couple positions so you almost
25:16get a two for one if we keep that player and so we can go maybe a little bit lighter than we normally
25:21would in this position group because we are keeping those four quarterbacks yeah i really it's probably
25:25in our linebacker and safety rooms because in in our defense um call it the strong safety or quarter
25:33position really has a bit of a blend you know with our with our second level defenders and so um some
25:39of the players in each of those rooms they uh can live in both worlds so to speak and that does give us
25:45some uh some roster flexibility as we build out the 53. gage larvedan taking it from his eight
25:50takes a big hit with a five yard return and that means that shador sanders will return to the field
25:59what has impressed you most about shador maybe something that we the fans have not seen on social
26:04media since that's the end all be all i'll give you two things um so i think the first thing is it can
26:11never be you know underestimated how big of a transition it is for a quarterback to go from college to the nfl
26:18i think particularly in in shador's case like he's going from a college offensive system where
26:24i kind of give the example it's like okay imagine you are fluent in english and now you have to learn
26:29mandarin you know it's not even a germanic language and his growth really since the spring on you know
26:34the mental side of things having commanded the offense um has been real impressive and then the second
26:38part is just like his physical mental toughness um you know for him to be out here so soon after
26:44his oblique injury is is is really no um like no easy thing especially for a thrower and um you know
26:53he just he just loves playing he loves being on the lights he loves being there for his teammates
26:56um and that's exactly what you want out of out of your quarterback let's uh talk a little bit about
27:02some other positions on offense people are curious about quinchon judkins and how we're doing with that
27:07yeah so there's there's there's not much that um you know that that i have an update on in terms of in
27:14terms of q um you know we'll take that day to day um and uh i mean it's a situation appropriately
27:20uh second and ten after marshall had the drop he'll get it put in his belly and get maybe a yard or two
27:29uh you just signed isaiah bond this week as well we saw him on the field for a handful of plays in
27:35the first half what made you comfortable with that sign yeah a big part of it is you know we have uh
27:41gotten to know isaiah's player person in the past calendar year and then obviously done
27:46uh an enormous amount of work um you know on his legal situation um you know that's something
27:53that you know we never take lightly when the players in you know uh involved in the situation
27:57or allegedly involved in a in a situation like that um and really we got really comfortable doing our
28:04due diligence and our investigative work um felt comfortable with the you know with the player just
28:11based on his time with tommy reese uh at alabama um and after his criminal uh case was resolved um you
28:20know we felt really good about bringing it to the organization
28:24sanders had gotten out of the pocket overshot travion williams down the right side there are
28:28multiple flags down perhaps ineligible man downfield
28:34joe will always say that for offensive linemen that's a tough go it's a tough one yeah sometimes
28:46you're out there trying to get a block for your quarterback and you don't realize exactly where
28:51you are because you think maybe the quarterback has broken contain and is going to try to take off
28:55and run with it um but those are the breaks sometimes the alignment we're pretty low on the pecking order
29:00if anybody really cares about what we have to say about something or what we think yeah joe i always
29:04think about is like i think o-line's the only position in any sport where you play with your
29:08back to the ball and these guys who extend the play or play out of structure it can it can make life
29:13difficult um you know not when they don't play on time joe used to play with his back to the basket
29:19too when he was an animal he was kind of nice full of hoops you don't want to see this drop step
29:23dunk baby so andrew the bad news is we went three and out again on offense the good news is you get to
29:29stick around as we're going to talk a little defense all right all right more with andrew
29:33berry in cleveland grounds lead the ramp 16 7. preseason football on news 5 is presented by
29:42university hospitals official healthcare partner of the cleveland browns as we continue on with
29:49andrew berry and here's some key dates coming up tuesday four o'clock cleveland time you got to reduce
29:54that roster to 53 players the work doesn't stop there what are the next several days like for you and
30:00your staff yeah there's a fair amount of uh turnover at the bottom of the roster um after the cut down
30:06date and just as we're getting down to 53 players all 31 other teams are as well and so you know our
30:14focus at that point is really scouring uh the rest of the players who release and players that could really
30:21help upgrade um at the back end of some of these position groups so uh it's usually a uh a pretty
30:27busy and a pretty long night um you know after uh you know after the cut down um when we're looking
30:33either to to claim sign trade for players that we think can help us in the front in the in the short
30:38term and then on top of that we're also signing our 16 uh member practice squad which will be comprised
30:44of some players that are currently in our 90 and others that will be external
30:49how different is it for you guys having this long layoff versus when we played you know you play
30:54thursday and then all of a sudden labor day we can cut down and you go right back into uh prepping for
30:59that first game of the season but you guys have this real long layoff and you mentioned how cut
31:03down day works but what's the mentality as you're going through this big break here before you actually
31:08get into that game week i'd say number one it's a lot better from my perspective because it gives
31:14you a better chance to really get healthy as you go into week one uh in terms of the day-to-day of the
31:19team we have uh next week we call it sharp week uh where we want to make sure we're still high temple
31:25we're still meeting a level of of sharpness for the team going browns versus browns and then after labor
31:32day weekend that's when we really transition into the preparation for the opening browns drafted
31:37mason graham top of the first round dominant defensive tackle from michigan and the first
31:43thing i thought is oh i can't wait to see him next to miles garrett what have you seen and
31:46how have the vision for mason graham looked thus far in training camp lining him up with miles
31:51garrett we've been very pleased with mason's progress so far um you know particularly as an interior rusher
31:57uh you know our our vision was hey it's very difficult if you have a guy who can really affect the
32:02passer on the edge and a guy who can do it on the inside miles is always going to get the
32:06slide and that gives a one-on-one opportunity for your interior rusher or if they're going to you
32:12know double mason or double interior rusher then you've got the best player on best defensive player
32:15on the planet uh one-on-one against a tackle so it really puts the offense in a bit of a bind if
32:21if you can have two guys that that that are able to do that a lot has been made about mason graham's
32:26role in his michigan defense where he was more of a two-gapper and now where he's penetrating in jim
32:32schwartz's defense how's that transition been for him and what kind of play did you expect out of him
32:38as a penetrating guy as a guy that's more of a disruptor now here with the brands so physically
32:43and his playing personality we felt like it was going to be a really nice fit he um he's got quickness
32:49he's got power he's a really high motor player he has range um that wasn't necessarily always maximizing
32:55what he was asked to do with you know at michigan typically players that are in a system like that and
33:00then go to what we call an attack front it takes a little bit of time for them to to make the
33:04adjustment they revert back to to maybe old habits because in mason's case he will play in the same
33:09system for for three years and what we've been pleasantly surprised is is that mason has really
33:14taken to the technique quite quickly um and that's not to say that he's that he's perfect but uh he's
33:20probably learned a little bit more quickly than we would have anticipated rams with a long pass play
33:24to true edwards and the bad news for the browns is that julian okwara is back down behind the play
33:31andrew we're going to take a quick break and then we will continue on rams with the ball down nine in
33:37the third
33:43you do not want to miss a single play so get your seats to your favorite matchups today
33:47visit clevelandbrowns.com slash tickets today i know these good fans are waiting for number 12
33:53used to be number two out in boulder get back on the field andrew barry would love that as well
33:58because it means our defense would get the rams off the field that's right that's right chris let's
34:02get a stop here even even better let's get a turnover oh i like that i like where your head's at there
34:07that's a former db that's right i mean that's that's that mentality i see
34:11dresser wind remains in the game it's first and ten for the rams with this play and then start
34:19talking about the browns secondary stoops dropped down at the 34. eastern mascarinas arnold on the stop
34:28so the secondary obviously suffered a really really tough blow early in camp with mj emerson going down
34:35with the achilles denzel ward greg newson both nursing shoulder injuries they're okay expected good to go
34:41before we've won the whole bit it's the depth after that that obviously would be a concern for you
34:45where are you yeah it's uh you know losing mj that's a that's a big blow um and quite frankly
34:51we're never going to be able to fully replace that in season but it does give great opportunity for
34:58you know younger players like miles harden and ken mitchell to step up um i'll touch on miles
35:03specifically just because you know he missed most of his rookie year he was a seventh round pick out of
35:08south dakota state for us and um he's done a really nice job uh acclimating to our to our nickel position
35:15and we've been pleased with his progress um but we are looking for more guys to to step up um and uh this
35:21is an important game for a number of guys uh for spots four and five
35:24that is well done by you by the way that was excellent third and seven for win completes spin
35:37and not quite getting the first down is presley good fight so that's going to bring up fourth and short
35:46nice defensive ball by jim schwartz running that trap corner i said that dylan gabriel has to be worried
35:52about where you got your outside cornerback able to fall off and make a big hit almost disrupts the
35:58football there when the ball goes to the inside receiver on an outbreak route all right are we
36:02getting one of these uh one of the measurements here it is yeah this is it it's the hawkeye virtual
36:07measurement system now just so that you know measures the ball location relative to the line
36:13of game it does not stop the ball that's still human got a half dozen cameras on one side of the
36:18stadium doing this doesn't utilize lasers or chips in the ball here we go now they say it should take
36:25about 30 seconds to do this whole thing you don't have this system in your backyard or anything no no
36:29i don't but i'm a huge fan of the the hawkeye tech now 30 seconds for the games i've watched i i will
36:35take the over in terms of how long it's taken we're still figuring it out but i just say we use we use
36:41you know lasers track there here we go i love here we go lasers tracking technology for track and field
36:46all these major sports and you know for decades we spilled in using just chains like this this
36:51makes so much more sense you know you weren't working on this at harvard i mean you couldn't
36:55have figured out how to get i i should have man i i you know what about yeah that's exactly right
37:00i want to make a lot of money but you still would have been in this job because you love it in your past
37:06all right by the way that was nine inches short i remember the first time i called it in carolina i
37:10think i called it wrong it's like hey that was uh 1.2 inches everybody on twitter of course was
37:16wonderfully receptive for that yeah they're like hey you idiot yeah i'm sure they gave you a lot
37:22of grace chris all right let's see what the brown short yardage defense has let's go
37:33pushing forward wait well that's first we don't need the hawkeye for that
37:40all right so linebacker wise carson swestinger first pick of the second round some people are like wait
37:45off ball linebacker and obviously you needed him jok not playing this year jordan hicks retires at the
37:51beginning of training camp what has carson swestinger shown you that maybe even you didn't expect when
37:57you turned the name in i mean carson it's it's like we added a five-year vet to the room it's very rare for
38:04rookie linebackers to be able to come in and wear the green dot right away and it's really been seamless
38:09with him um he's long he can run really nice play kamari james you know carson he's got great instincts
38:22and he has um just a sensational desire to be great his work ethic is is absolutely outstanding and we
38:30compare that with physical talent and intelligence um it's it's obviously a winning combination
38:35the rest of that room took a little bit of a hit this past week nathaniel watson was having a great
38:40camp done for the year with the biceps winston reed is dinged up as well he had to sign a couple of
38:45guys i believe uh wednesday or thursday just to fill out for this game good job by easton mascarinas
38:53arnold he's been great as an undrafted rookie free agent out of usc is that a guy that is
38:59being discussed in that room chris you could not have picked a better segue
39:02um we're very pleased very very pleased this guy's a pro here very pleased with easton this preseason
39:10it's funny him parson and mason they they might as we might as well call them the triplets because
39:16they're always together in the facility since since spring he can run he's physical um he can play in
39:22coverage even though he's a little undersized that's not as big of a deal in our system and
39:26um yeah he's he's made a lot of plays this office for us brown's blitzing win rolls out right throws
39:33incomplete good job by kj henry getting into the backfield of course had a pick six last week in
39:39philly and the rams will come out and it looks like they're going to try a long field goal josh carty
39:46boy you've uh your time of possession this quarter has been immense i just want to say
39:56that's good i was gonna say yeah i mean can you use that in contract negotiations you know i wish i
40:02wish joe will gladly volunteer to give back some of the cash he's been taking oh yeah i mean i was
40:08doing this for free they're paying you to do this chris i that other stuff that i got when i was playing
40:13i already spent it on cattle and waggy beef and farm so it's gone all right we have a quick time
40:21out you want to say goodbye you can you can go or do you want to hang through the the kick i will
40:26give you let's let's hang through the kick okay look i only get to do this once a year with you guys
40:30that's true i'm not trying to kick you out you can stay the rest of the game you gotta stretch this
40:33out here chris chris is trying to get rid of you that's not what i'm doing i mean it was it was soft
40:38it was professional don't make me come over there do not make me come over save me ad i know you're a
40:43lot stronger than the three of us you're the only guy were you ever uh the guy in the wing trying to
40:47block the kick you know what i i was but fun fact i was actually the holder in college really i was yeah
40:54you can't come up and then go back down on the knee you're down yeah i was i was always did you ever have
40:58to throw a pass like i did i did i did i did we completed it but we did not convert for minus two yards
41:07so what is your career stat line at cornerback then one for one for minus two hundred rating 45
41:13yard attempt by cardi and he nails it andrew barry it was a pleasure man no my pleasure is my oh my
41:22thank you good seeing you good luck can't wait to see the final 53 on tuesday and then beyond
41:26jador sanders in the on deck circle we'll see him right after this
41:30this 45-yard field goal has gotten the ramps back within six as jador sanders about to take the field
41:38yet again heard some interesting stuff from andrew barry going to be busy for the next week trying to
41:46put the finishing touches on the 2025 version of the browns who will start this next drive at the 35.
41:53so we haven't seen much from the offense under the leadership this time of shador sanders
42:02that's going to happen uh what do you want to see now i'd like to see a long drive with some
42:07opportunity for him to show off his stuff right he's done a great job being poised back there making
42:13great decisions on when to stay in the pocket when to leave in his last start but just not a lot of
42:18opportunities not great blocking and then just drives that are stalling because they're not
42:23successful in the run game so keeping them in long situations receivers not giving them windows to throw to
42:32marshall in the backfield behind sanders he'll get the rock and go nowhere courtesy of that rams defense
42:42by the way under the tutelage of chris shula grandson of the legendary coach don shula and a
42:49former collegiate teammate of sean mcveigh at miami university cradle of coaches my man ohio is just
42:58unbelievably loaded with great coaches that have littered the college football landscape the nfl landscape
43:04i mean there's really good football here all the way to high school friday night lights is
43:09something i'm very jealous of as a guy who's living in wisconsin now sanders dumps it down to marshall for
43:16a short game we saw shadora a couple of weeks ago in his nfl opener at carolina actually went against
43:25the first string defense his first couple of drives really lit it up after that poised ball placement was
43:32really for the most part outstanding and let's remember he is an uber accurate passer yeah we've seen
43:38that accuracy today not a lot of places to go with the football that last throw probably could have
43:43thrown the intermediate route would have gained a couple more yards but everything has been quick
43:47with his decision making and accurate with the throw rams blitz it sanders that's the ball script
43:55bouncing around and the browns it appears they fall on it
44:01it was muhammad that came in off the edge to jar the ball loose from sanders and it'll be another
44:10three and out ivy the browns left tackle there does not do a great job around the edge shadora sanders
44:18one thing he needs to learn is in those situations you've got those third and longs you're taking a
44:22deep drop because you've got routes that are going deep down the field you want to be able to step up
44:26because those tackles got problems with those speed rushers coming around the edge so he hung a
44:31little bit deep in the pocket there not saying it still wouldn't have been a sack but that's
44:35something that he's got to learn on those third long plays to be able to step up and climb in the pocket
44:42loses the ball inside the five yard line and gets stopped in his tracks another booming punt
44:49by cory bahorquez who has averaged more than 50 yards per punt we will pause now for a word from
44:55huntington bank you ever feel like your money is just lying around welcome to huntington a bank that
45:04believes we should all get more from money like a path to turn all those late nights into beach days
45:10sunscreen noel and a nudge when you've got enough for the goat without wiping out the groceries
45:17in anything to make life easier for all you small business owners we see you dad banking isn't just
45:24checking and saving it's about getting more for money huntington bank brown's offense stalled here
45:31in the second half but another great punt by cory bahorquez as the rams starting this next drive
45:39inside their own five at about the three yard line second time for for jork has pinning him back with
45:47a booming punt inside the five yard line what a weapon this guy is for the browns yeah he has been
45:54fantastic now in his fourth season here in cleveland he has five punts over 70 yards in the last three
46:00seasons nobody else in the league has more than two as a former punter myself i uh feel like a kindred
46:08spirit to my punters with him in college underappreciated but you're with a hunter oh yeah
46:14penny the bush the great penny the bush the leg we call him the first i get a good kicker it's called
46:19kenny the leg kenny the leg who else was your third roommate jimmy the nose oh to the backup car
46:25paul standard uh so i really got along very well with the special teams guys this is uh this is breaking
46:31news with joe thomas that he ruined with i'm not laughing at the back and a snapper so a snapper
46:36and two punters the good news is we have an entire fourth quarter to break down who else was on your
46:41dormitory hallway in madison pounds up 16.
46:50third quarter stats brought to you by bridgestone bridgestone the official tire of the cleveland browns
46:55not much to write home about for the rounds in the uh third quarter two total yards
47:01not running the ball not protecting your quarterback and for shaddor sanders the guy that a lot of people
47:07most people are out here to watch here today not really getting an opportunity to show his stuff
47:12like he did when he was playing against carolina a couple weeks ago i think the best thing about
47:17the third quarter outside of the interview with andrew barry was in fact we found out that she
47:21roomed with long snappers punters punters
47:31that's a little false startage false start offense number 57 half the distance to the goal
47:39you know overall i think it's been an outstanding camp you've mentioned the physicality and that
47:44that has been an emotional mindset change for this organization there was hitting there was tackling
47:50in camp and people said well of course there is it's football but not that has not been the
47:54stefanski camp wave for much of the first five years of his tenure and you can see the physicality
47:59has shown up on game day i think i think so too i think you saw it in those joint practices where the
48:04browns were just out physically the carolina panthers and the philadelphia eagles they were
48:09opposing their will on them and it started on both sides of the offensive and the defensive line there
48:15in the trenches and really just continued all the way through the linebacker core and the safeties
48:20you've seen some big hits today so what i really like about a training camp or a pre-season is those
48:25opportunities to get your mind into football speed right which not just talking about how fast you
48:31need to react and play but how you need to run through tackles and run through blocks to make that
48:36physical portion of the game second nature which that's something i think you almost have to
48:40relearn every time you put the pads back on and start a new season grounds force of three and out
48:46as wins has sailed high over
