00:00Then a missed field goal ended the ball game in essence that game last night was just crazy I'll get into some of the numbers in a second if we get a chance what a good start for the Green Bay Packers at home they beat Detroit Micah Parsons right in the middle of it Aaron Rodgers says hey don't forget about me four touchdown passes later that's right it's the offense bailing out the defense with the Steelers a little change of the script you know that one felt good for him and and what a win for Josh Allen in the Bills
00:30to be able to beat a conference rival week one that's a big win could be a really big win by the offense five-yard pony second down that is the fourth false start against the Chicago Bears here in the first half where do you want to go in that Buffalo Baltimore game Bills trailed by 15 with under four minutes left it's the fourth win in over 2300 NFL games in that situation since 2000
00:59Ravens 25 and 0 all time when scoring 40 plus Josh Allen 394 two touchdowns through the air and two on the ground and Lamar was outstanding too here's Zaccheaus first down Chicago
01:15Olamide who last year was good with the commanders get 16 yards on a dart from Caleb Williams well it just kind of opens up I mean he had his choice as to whatever he wanted to do
01:27you see Olamide Zaccheaus he also had Cole Komet but the parting of the seas take your pick I like Olamide Zaccheaus he comes in and I thought he had nice chemistry what I saw of him with Caleb Williams in training camp and in these preseason games here's Swift
01:50the Andre brought down by Dallas Turner who the Vikings are hoping takes a big step in his second season a first round pick from Alabama last season had three sacks and interception as a rookie but more consistent play they want made the stop second and seven this is a big drive right here for Minnesota defensively to try to keep from giving up any points I mean this is the Bears get a chance to extend the game and the Bears get a chance to get a chance to get a chance to get a chance to get a chance to get a chance to get a chance to get a chance to get a chance to get a chance to get a chance
02:20that's going to get a chance to get a chance to get a chance to get the sons that are in their lead they get the ball to start the second half a little different for this Minnesota Vikings defense not playing with the leads they did a year ago here is swift gets hit by pace and that will take us to the two minute warning did we get the Cκεude Tune in yeah we did we did we
02:41we.
02:41We got it in two minutes left in the half Soldier Field Bears moving the football leading seven three.
02:50Stay tuned for the All-State
03:00Halftime SVP Ryan Clark Jason
03:02Kelsey will have their
03:04takeaways from the first half of
03:05this game Boomer will have his
03:07fastest three minutes fun start
03:10to the season through week one
03:13week one comes to a close here
03:15tonight they're down and five
03:20to the end of the game Caleb
03:29Williams throws he's got
03:31Zaccheaus who was in motion at
03:33the start of that play and ends
03:36up out of the right side catching
03:38throw of seven yards a really
03:42nice route here by Zaccheaus as
03:43he comes in motion and then
03:45pivots back out and he creates
03:46some separation then off the line
03:48of scrimmage and a ball that's
03:49thrown on the money now we saw
03:51from Minnesota four man rush but
03:53they've got a spy in the middle
03:56and so you tie up a rusher just
04:01because he's keeping his eyes on
04:02Caleb because of the fact he's
04:03been able to scramble so you then
04:05remove a defender from coverage
04:07as well.
04:08And off to Swift Caleb Williams all
04:16four of his runs were scrambles in
04:19this game when protection broke
04:21down he's got four scrambles 32
04:23yards two first downs and a
04:26touchdown run the only touchdown
04:28of the game and look at time of
04:30possession just dominated by
04:32Chicago.
04:33Yeah if you're Minnesota you've
04:35just got to be happy with the
04:36fact that right now you're only
04:38down four points and if you can
04:39hold Chicago to a field goal as as
04:43badly as you've been outplayed in
04:44this first half to just be a one
04:46possession game.
04:48Toss to Swift bends it back not
04:50much third down coming up.
04:52Dallas Turner has been involved
04:56Bears have one time out.
04:58The Vikings if they're trying to
05:00conserve time have two and
05:03they're letting the clock run.
05:05Yeah here you are third down you
05:06got two timeouts you got a chance
05:08to possibly get the ball back into
05:10your hands and yet Kevin O'Connell
05:12is elected to let the clock run
05:13the Bears certainly aren't going to
05:15stop the clock they'll let this
05:16thing run down as well and give
05:18themselves an opportunity to
05:20control things going in here at
05:21the first half look at all that
05:30movement defensively on third
05:31down and five to the sideline
05:34catches made by a dunes a Murphy
05:37is there and it's fourth down.
05:42It's fourth down and two after a
05:44completion of three yards gone
05:47forward once on fourth and short
05:49down here will they go again.
05:51For now the offense stays out there.
05:59Yeah I would I would expect that
06:01Ben Johnson's going to go for it
06:03here.
06:04Viking skews one of their two
06:06remaining timeouts.
06:09Chicago gets the ball to start
06:11the second half on top of all
06:13this and with that they're going to
06:15bring their kicker Cairo Santos
06:17on try and make this a seven
06:21point game again and attempt to
06:25forty two yardage it was twenty
06:30one of twenty five last year his
06:34sixth year with the Bears during
06:36his second tenure in Chicago.
06:52Just sneaks it inside the right
06:53upright.
06:56Not an easy place to kick.
06:57And Santos I'm sure will take it
06:59from forty two yards away made
07:04it by he squeezed it in there that
07:09much and it's a seven point game
07:12again I think overall Chicago you
07:17would think that Ben Johnson feels
07:21pretty good with what they've been
07:22able to do this is of course some
07:24of these divisional games that
07:26we've seen here on opening
07:28weekend he's able to come in with
07:31a with a young ballclub and all
07:33the things that he's trying to
07:34get going in the right direction
07:35and get a win against this team
07:38that won 14 games last year.
07:41That'd be a great start to his
07:42year.
07:42When you think Ben Johnson you
07:44think of the three previous years
07:46as offensive coordinator in
07:47Detroit you think about not just
07:49prolific offense but gadget
07:51plays offensive linemen throwing
07:55passes catching passes we saw
07:57golf catch a touchdown last year.
08:00They're not really there.
08:02No.
08:02Yeah.
08:03They just want to they want to put
08:04one foot in front of the other
08:05right now.
08:06Yeah.
08:06And I and none of Dan Campbell's
08:09run run rubbed off on him coming
08:12over.
08:12I think Dan Campbell would have
08:14been going for it there.
08:18Here's a return by Miles Price.
08:23Just able to get across the 30.
08:25But here you go just to remind
08:27you of some of the Ben Johnson
08:28trick plays last year week three
08:30against Arizona hook and ladder
08:31Almond Ross St. Brown Jameer
08:32Gibbs helped him to a win.
08:35Here's the one we saw against the
08:36Seahawks with Jared Goff catching
08:38a touchdown pass week six against
08:41the Dallas Cowboys the reverse
08:43flea flicker resulted in a 52
08:45yard touchdown pass to Sam La
08:47Porta in a forty seven to nine
08:50victory.
08:51I would imagine that it would be
08:54fun to play offense knowing that
08:56that man is your coordinator as
08:58they had over the last three
08:59years in Detroit.
09:00Yeah.
09:00And I think right now his mind
09:02said hey let's get good at the
09:03easy things first and then we'll
09:05go from there well they're gonna
09:08push it and why not Naylor and
09:12there's action they've got one
09:15timeout left and this officiating
09:23crews had a tough time spotting
09:24the football in this game they
09:26finally blow it dead because
09:28Naylor got out of bounds.
09:29Final timeout Minnesota thirty
09:31second timeout.
09:36Well I don't we we are in
09:37disagreement with where they're
09:38putting the football right now
09:39but either way the knee is down
09:41so he did not get out of bounds
09:44he's contacted and that's why
09:48Minnesota Russell Yurk had to
09:49use their final timeout.
09:51Absolutely correctly ruled that
09:52he was down by contact inbound
09:53so Minnesota had to call a time
09:55up to stop the clock.
09:56Remember they use the timeout
09:57on the last defensive
09:59possession just before the
10:00field goal so you know they're
10:02not able to then try to run
10:04anything else.
10:05Well now with eleven seconds
10:07left and no timeouts they're
10:10going to move the ball which is
10:11what we expected here they they
10:13had a bad spot on the front
10:15and they're going to move the
10:17ball which is what we expected
10:18here they they had a bad spot
10:20on the front end and they're
10:22going to move the ball which is
10:23a good game to the football so
10:24they're moving it back.
10:26Kevin O'Connell has already made
10:28the decision for the moment that
10:30he was going to send Will
10:30Reichard out.
10:33But now the ball sitting at the
10:35forty one which is a fifty nine
10:40yard try by Reichard instead of
10:43with no timeouts having the young
10:45quarterback try and get a
10:46little more yardage his career
10:48best is fifty eight so it's
10:50right in that range.
10:51fifty nine yard try by Reichard with
10:56eleven seconds to go high snap
10:58Reichard he's got it and it's a new
11:06career high for Will Reichard and
11:09that completion to Jalen Naylor got
11:12the Vikings into the edge of field
11:17goal range and Reichard did the
11:18rest.
11:18Yeah he sure did.
11:19I mean he had to drive this ball
11:21pretty hard to get it across.
11:23He got all of it.
11:25That's an outstanding job.
11:27What was lost in that is the route
11:29by Jalen Naylor to get themselves in
11:31a position to even give Reichard an
11:33opportunity for this play.
11:36Justin Jefferson loving it.
11:38The completion was twenty eight
11:40yards for JJ McCarthy who's
11:43watching that sail through the
11:45uprights that ties the fifty nine
11:48yarder a soldier field record which
11:51belongs to of all people Matt
11:53Prater from twenty fifteen who was
11:55the hero and made the game winning
11:58kick last night as he had spent
12:01according to Mike to Rico like a
12:03hundred hours in Western New York
12:06with his new team the Buffalo
12:08Bills.
12:10Well that's big time by him coming
12:12through there with a career best
12:14fifty nine yarder that might be
12:17the spark and boost that this team
12:23needed going in at half and McCarthy
12:30basically doubled his passing
12:32yards on that completion to
12:34Naylor.
12:35Now here's a nice return by Luther
12:38Burton the rookie from Missouri and
12:41that's the end of the half as
12:42Burton was trying to break one he
12:45got it to midfield and that was
12:47it forty three yard return but the
12:50half comes to a close in a ten six
12:52game Caleb Williams the hot start
12:55Bears defense forcing four three
12:57and outs Justin Jefferson just one
13:00catch in the first half it's a ten
13:03six game the All-State halftime is
13:06coming your way next tonight's
13:13first half highlights are
13:14presented by Target what a fun
13:18night in a great way to cap week
13:20one McCarthy is down they force the
13:24three and out what a throw really
13:26was Williams looking for the end
13:29zone he is in touchdown get
13:35everything you need to win game
13:37day at Target as we welcome you
13:41back you're watching NFL kickoff
13:43presented by YouTube TV great scene
13:49here in Chicago welcome inside the
13:51broadcast booth Joe Buck along
13:53with Troy Aikman I coaching makes
13:56a difference and to me Caleb
13:58Williams looks poised settled and a
14:00lot different than he did last
14:02year there's no question that Ben
14:04Johnson has been able to settle
14:05him down get him knowing where he
14:08wants him going with the football
14:10and remember in this first half I
14:11mean neither quarterback got much
14:13help from the running game so
14:14Caleb for the Chicago Bears he was
14:16having to do it himself with his
14:18legs and then also with his arm
14:21and they get an opportunity here
14:22to start this second half for the
14:23football again here is Duvernay on
14:28the return moments ago Laura
14:30Rutledge caught up with Ben
14:32Johnson then you get the ball to
14:34start this second half what's most
14:36important for Caleb Williams right
14:38now he just needs to keep getting
14:40completions he's doing a great job
14:41taking what's there and he's
14:42extending some plays and so keep on
14:44doing what he's doing what can you
14:46say about your defense and the way
14:47they've handled J they're
14:48outstanding right now we gave up a
14:49little little pass interference
14:51there that hurt us and we gave up
14:52that big one at the back end but
14:54other than that they're playing a
14:55great game all right thanks man
14:56thank you Joe all right Laura
14:58thanks he's anxious to get back out
14:59there he didn't even hear the end of
15:01the end of the game Caleb Williams
15:12surveys and then throws out of the
15:15reach of DeAndre Swift Ben
15:20Johnson was a walk on quarterback
15:22at North Carolina 0 4 to 0 6 late
15:27high school football in Asheville
15:29North Carolina won a state
15:31championship there idolized Joe
15:32Montana his father was a high
15:35school football coach he is I
15:38guess it would be a negative to
15:39say somebody's wound tight this
15:40isn't meant to be at all I think
15:42he is kind of a no actually you
15:45know there's no nothing extra in
15:47there if he doesn't like the way
15:48you're playing or if he wants to
15:50not hear the end of your question
15:51he's gonna let you know second down
15:54and ten swift a good job to pick
15:59up a pass rusher in the past for
16:01commit is out of his reach third
16:03down yeah I think Joe the well
16:07this is doesn't matter if it's
16:09football or any other sport or
16:11any other business I think the
16:13leaders have to bring the
16:15urgency and there's no question
16:17that Ben Johnson has brought
16:19urgency to Chicago in the way
16:21that he has handled this football
16:23team and the expectations that
16:25he has brought and it's one of
16:27the reasons why I really believe
16:29and see his frustration there I
16:31think he's frustrated because
16:32Caleb Williams had an
16:33opportunity to get the ball to
16:34the rookie Colston Loveland in
16:35the middle of the field and he
16:36didn't do it but he's an
16:38impatient guy for sure and now a
16:41throw behind Zacchaeus pressure on
16:43Caleb Williams who ends up on the
16:46ground and in a blink it's fourth
16:49down and a punt upcoming from
16:50Torrey Taylor now this is the
16:52pressure on this last play is you
16:54see Grenard he he pushes the left
16:56tackle right back into his lap and
16:59he's feeling the pressure and
17:01then not getting the ball out
17:02accurately the way that he would
17:03like but I still think even
17:06though I think when when Caleb
17:08goes back and watches this film
17:09he's going to see some things
17:10that he wishes him to be
17:12thrown but overall I think he's
17:15handled everything really well
17:17against an unpredictable
17:18defense Miles Price will field
17:24it nice move right up the gut
17:30and the Vikings will start
17:31inside Chicago territory after
17:33twenty one yard return by the
17:36rookie Miles Price and with JJ
17:39McCarthy settling in one of the
17:41if not the best receiver in the game
17:45is going to have to show a little
17:47patience because I'm sure Justin
17:50Jefferson could get frustrated here
17:52tonight yeah there's no question
17:54that when you're an all-pro receiver
17:56like he is and he's a great
17:58teammate and I do believe he's an
18:00unselfish player he knows what he's
18:03capable of doing and he just hasn't
18:05especially with two of the top corners
18:08out of this ballgame for Chicago for
18:10them not take advantage of it play
18:12action and again this ball and a flag
18:16comes in after McCarthy got hit a
18:21ball and the arm of McCarthy was hit as
18:26he let it go and then a flag came in
18:28when McCarthy got knocked to the ground
18:31by Odenbo personal foul rough in the
18:35past number fifty five defense 15
18:37yard penalty automatic first hour
18:43they run a game and they got Odenbo
18:45coming right up the middle and you
18:46see there's the launch and it's
18:48just to the the head and neck area
18:50with the shoulder he's trying to
18:52take the head out of it but when
18:54you come in and you see the end
18:55of this with the shoulder to the
18:57head it was a pretty pretty good
18:58hit I think it was the right call
19:03Montez Sweat was involved as
19:05well Bears fans don't agree with
19:08the call that 15 yarder gets the
19:12ball down inside the thirty five
19:16here's Jones pressure off the edge
19:20Bayard came in to make the stop
19:25we're talking about Justin Jefferson
19:27he has been targeted twice he has
19:29one catch and we'll see who's been
19:33playing across from him the Sean
19:35Wright Tyreek Stevenson and Nick
19:38McLeod well they try to make up for
19:42the absence of Jalen Johnson their
19:44best corner you hold Justin
19:46Jefferson to one catch in four
19:47yards here's a toss to Aaron
19:51Jones tries to cut it back third
19:55long coming up as Brisker makes a
19:57stop the other guy we talked
19:59touched on at the beginning of
20:00the game it's not here one of the
20:02best nickel corners in the game
20:04and Tyler Gordon so they're thin
20:05back there but they're holding up
20:07pretty well they're holding up
20:08exceptionally well part of it is
20:11because of the way these guys who
20:13have had to step in have played
20:14the Sean Wright Nick McLeod but
20:16the other part of this is this
20:18defensive front and that was a
20:20big question mark coming into
20:22this game how would they fare and
20:25they've gotten the JJ McCarthy so
20:27this revamped offensive line for
20:29Minnesota has not been as strong
20:32as they'd like play clock is at one
20:35they just got it away on third
20:37long watch out picked off there's
20:41right down the sideline gets a block
20:44and now a touchdown the former
20:47Vikings pick six
20:51open the base
20:54and then you can do it they can do the
20:55running last
20:56and then you can do it right down the
20:57court and then you can do it
20:58have theissen you can do it
20:59have a lot of cables
21:00and then the other players are
21:01in there
21:02in there
21:03to get the same way
21:04it's the same way
21:07yes
21:08yes
21:09yes
21:10yes
21:11yes
21:14yes
21:16yes
21:17yes
21:18yes
21:20yes
21:21fourth year in the league
21:24on the Vikings practice squad
21:27last year and that pass was
21:28telegraphed and Wright took care
21:30of the rest they brought the
21:31pressure Dennis Allen called it
21:33up at the perfect time this John
21:36Wright sitting on the route
21:37gets his first career pick six
21:41and then went 74 yards for the
21:44touchdown
21:45what a moment
21:51for the fourth year pro from
21:53Oregon State former Viking playing
21:57in place of Jalen Johnson who's
22:00loving every second of it bears by
22:0311.
22:12Well the first year starter JJ
22:14McCarthy who sat out all of last
22:16year with a torn meniscus in his
22:18right knee just watched the Sean
22:22Wright go the other way 74 yards
22:24basically a 10 point swing as the
22:27Vikings were in field goal range.
22:28It was a seven man rush first time
22:30Dennis Allen's called the blitz all
22:32night long the Sean Wright who was on
22:34the practice squad for Minnesota last
22:36year working against Justin Jefferson.
22:38He's expecting the ball out no one
22:40they can't protect he sits on it and
22:43he makes a house call.
22:44It's the guy last year who did not
22:47play a defensive snap for Minnesota
22:50just making his fourth career start
22:53in the NFL.
22:54But remind yourself the play clock
22:58again was going down to one second.
23:00And so the rushers were able to tee
23:03off and you've got a quarterback who
23:05was rushed as he has been all night.
23:07Chad Chad Chandler up near the twenty
23:11nine knocked down by Jonathan Owens.
23:14Return of twenty four yards and now
23:17McCarthy after the pick six has to
23:19go right back to work and it's time
23:21to get going.
23:22Well we saw to start this game that
23:24you know a lot of these plays are
23:26scripted Kevin O'Connell scripts
23:28plays the first twenty first twenty
23:30five plays and yet they were having
23:32issues with the play clock and he's
23:35trying to check protection trying to
23:36get to the right play whatever it
23:37might be.
23:38But it's been a reoccurring problem
23:40throughout this game and it was on
23:42the last play when it got flipped
23:45then the Sean Wright took to the
23:46house.
23:49Here's a toss to Mason nice cut back
23:52Jordan Mason last year made six
23:55starts.
23:56Well Christian McCaffrey was injured
23:59an average ninety five rush yards
24:01a game over the first seven you
24:03talked about them adding him then
24:04they added a two year contract
24:06next to his name and he's been the
24:09better of the two backs tonight.
24:10Well he has.
24:11They they haven't gotten quite
24:13enough yet.
24:14But you know talking with Kevin
24:17O'Connell the biggest point of
24:20emphasis for J.J. McCarthy was how
24:23he handled the pre snap mechanics
24:27of this offense play action steps
24:32up down he goes that is Toronto
24:37passing yo who just came up from the
24:40practice squad for this game and a
24:42loss of seven.
24:46Passing yo he's getting in the
24:47action now.
24:49And some time with Kansas City
24:51coming right up the top here and
24:53you've got school again who's
24:55making the start because of all
24:57world Christian dare saw unable to
24:59go and he gives up the sack on
25:02McCarthy now third and thirteen
25:06things are going to be moving
25:08awfully fast for J.J. McCarthy
25:09right now.
25:10Normally they slow down they're
25:11getting faster now that'll be
25:13a delay again there's a lot on a
25:31quarterback within this offense
25:32really both of these offenses and
25:34just trying to get to the line of
25:36scrimmage.
25:37Sometimes you've always got your
25:39eyes on the play clock he
25:40certainly understands and he
25:41hasn't been fooled by that.
25:43But they just and when you're
25:46rust you're already rust as a
25:48young quarterback making his
25:49first NFL start.
25:50But when you're under the gun of
25:52the play clock you know then
25:55you're not you're just not even
25:56able to even see the defense
25:58you're just so worried about the
25:59snap and obviously he's having
26:01even a hard time hearing the
26:02calls coming in and play a
26:04conservative hand to Mason and
26:06he is jumped by Dexter a loss of
26:16two and things are snowballing
26:18here for the Vikings.
26:19You know we've talked a lot about
26:20Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson
26:22and what they've done on the
26:23offensive side of the ball and
26:24again we all know that McCarthy
26:26is making his first NFL start
26:28but this defense and what Dennis
26:29Allen has brought.
26:32The game has brought up here
26:34tonight in the way that they
26:36have really excelled against an
26:38excellent group.
26:39Been pretty impressive.
26:41The punt by right.
26:44Duvernay from the 30 juggled and
26:48then stepped out of bounds.
26:49Dennis Allen has done some job
26:53with this defense flag is down on
26:55that punt 24th season and as an
26:57NFL coach.
26:59He's been a head coach with the
27:00Raiders and of course most
27:03recently with the Saints and his
27:05group is flying around tonight.
27:06They really are and and he's
27:09played it pretty close to the
27:11best holding number 43 the
27:13receiving team senior penalty
27:15from the end of the kick first
27:17down Chicago timeout.
27:19He's played it pretty close to
27:20the best until the one blitz when
27:22he got the intersection to turn
27:23for a touchdown but those guys
27:25up front are playing some good
27:26football.
27:27Came in talking about the two
27:28quarterbacks.
27:29We may go out of this game
27:30talking about this Bears defense.
27:40Here in Chicago at halftime they
27:41honored the Super Bowl 20 champions
27:441985.
27:47Jim McMahon got a huge roar here
27:50tonight.
27:51Mike Singletary.
27:55I mean you go on down the list
27:57and a team that.
28:00Richard dent.
28:03Hampton about to get the Lombardi
28:05trophy.
28:14Here's a toss to Swift over the
28:17right side and no game.
28:20I mean that that defense in
28:22baseball when a team's really
28:24good and they can pound the
28:25ball you say well they're not
28:26they're not the twenty seven
28:27Yankees in the NFL.
28:30Everybody goes well they're not
28:31the eighty five bears out but
28:32this defense tonight would make
28:35some of those guys including
28:36guys that are in Canton proud
28:38with the way they've played
28:40against the Vikings
28:41defensively.
28:42They definitely made a good
28:43showing for sure on a night
28:45we're honoring the eighty five
28:46bears.
28:47And what a group that was.
28:49I was fortunate not to be
28:51drafted until 1989.
28:52Caleb Williams lets it fly.
28:55He has got more and more on a
29:00perfect throw from Caleb Williams
29:02has got twenty two yards.
29:05Well this is exactly what Ben
29:06Johnson wants to see the play
29:08action and then the pass to the
29:10outside to DJ more.
29:12this route is exceptional and the
29:16confidence in which Caleb Williams
29:18hits his back foot comes up lets
29:21it go is terrific.
29:24This is what Ben Johnson watched
29:26for the last three years in
29:27Detroit with Jared Goff when he
29:28was calling the plays just able
29:29to get it away with pressure in
29:31his face and delivered a strike.
29:33play action.
29:35That's the rookie Luther Burton the
29:36third and he is dropped
29:37immediately by Andrew Van Ginkle.
29:38So now if you're the Vikings
29:40and you're seeing what your young
29:41quarterback is doing
29:42offensively this defense which
29:43is one of the best was a year
29:45ago in the NFL has got to try
29:48to take matters into their own
29:49hands.
29:50Yeah and it's it's not foreign as
29:52far as the style you know if you
29:53say well now we've got to be
29:54more aggressive.
29:55They're already aggressive.
29:56Brian Flores he has no issue
29:57with that but it's just a little
29:59different that call she looks
30:00a little different when you're
30:01trailing by eleven points as
30:02opposed to playing with a lead
30:03like they were so many times a
30:04year ago.
30:06This pass was affected as
30:08Zaccheaus watched it bounce in
30:09there.
30:10I mean it's just a little
30:11different that call she looks
30:12a little different when you're
30:13trailing by eleven points as
30:14opposed to playing with a lead
30:15like they were so many times a
30:16year ago.
30:18This pass was affected as
30:19they did bounce in there.
30:22Andrew Van Ginkle was right
30:23there again.
30:25He's been all over the place.
30:27Five man rushed by this
30:28Minnesota defense and Andrew
30:30Van Ginkle.
30:31I mean this guy you talk about
30:33versatile athletes that can do
30:35just about anything.
30:36He was such a key guy.
30:38Last year having played for
30:40Brian Flores in Miami and
30:42knowing how to use him.
30:43I mean he lines up everywhere.
30:44He'll line up at slot.
30:46He'll be edge rusher off the
30:47ball linebacker.
30:48He does it all.
30:50Vikings need to stop on third
30:51down and thirteen.
30:54Good protection.
30:56Loveland the rookie.
30:58And Metellus wraps him up.
31:01That is good work by this
31:02Vikings defense.
31:03And if they want to hang in
31:04there in this ball game it's
31:06the defense that's got to get
31:07it done.
31:08And they just did.
31:09Yeah.
31:10Though they needed to come up
31:11with a stop and you know
31:12Colston Loveland who just
31:14caught that ball.
31:15He's got two catches on the
31:16night.
31:18He's he was their first round
31:19draft pick and Ben Johnson
31:22likes the two tight end
31:23personnel.
31:25And Colston Loveland he's going
31:27to get plenty of
31:28opportunities had a nice career
31:29in Michigan.
31:30And he's going to be a good
31:31player.
31:39Taylor the point just got it
31:40away.
31:42No flag.
31:43Taylor ended up on the ground.
31:45Here is price.
31:47He's had a nice evening tonight.
31:50In his NFL debut 18 yard return
31:53after a 51 yard punt.
31:56As we check in with Timothy O
31:58Tools.
32:00A pub here in Chicago.
32:03Thanks for letting us peek in
32:05and wetting our appetite.
32:06downtown Chicago all lit up.
32:18And this fan base is starved
32:21for a winner.
32:23And they're seeing some good
32:24things tonight not just from
32:25their young quarterback Caleb
32:26Williams.
32:28The head coaching debut of Ben
32:29Johnson for the defense eight
32:31possessions for the Vikings
32:33only five first downs for
32:35Minnesota.
32:36And seventy seven total yards.
32:39But.
32:40It's only an eleven point game.
32:46From the twenty three play
32:47action.
32:49Hawkinson asked to make a
32:50sliding catch in a short game.
32:53Ball was.
32:55Came out but he was down.
32:57That's the call right now.
32:58The field's a catch and
32:59receivers down by contact.
33:01Second down.
33:03As McLeod and Sewell.
33:04Sewell.
33:06Came together.
33:07I think it's worth talking
33:08about how.
33:10Kevin.
33:11O'Connell.
33:13Here's the catch.
33:17And his knee is down.
33:19Ball comes out.
33:21And a challenge flag first.
33:24Thrown by Ben Johnson.
33:26I don't see much there.
33:30Do you Russell York.
33:31No I don't see anything.
33:32He controlled the ball.
33:33He completed the process of
33:34the catch.
33:35The knee was down.
33:36And he was contacted by a
33:37defender.
33:38So he's down by contact before
33:39he gets up and the ball comes
33:40out.
33:42I think this challenge would be
33:43unsuccessful.
33:44Chicago's challenging the
33:45rolling on the field receiver
33:46being down by contact.
33:48Punched out by Noah Sewell.
33:51The knee's clearly down.
33:56But the challenge.
33:58By Ben Johnson will get the
33:59call.
34:00When we come back.
34:01When we come back.
34:11In replay the call.
34:13Stands and Russell York our
34:14rules analyst.
34:16Russell it doesn't matter that
34:17Sewell came in and just
34:18punched the ball.
34:20Correct.
34:22The punching of the ball is a
34:23football play and that's
34:24entirely legal.
34:26Even if he incidentally
34:27contacts the body that's not a
34:28foul.
34:29So the knee was down.
34:30Bad possession.
34:32Bears lose a timeout.
34:34And on second down and eight
34:35they set up a screen for Aaron
34:37Jones gets a block out there.
34:40And Jones with one of his
34:41bigger plays of the game is
34:43Donovan Jackson the rookie.
34:46Was out there and Noah Sewell
34:47with a good piece of work to
34:48make the tackle gain a six.
34:51Noah Sewell who's made the
34:52start for the injured TJ Edwards
34:54comes up and makes a nice
34:55play and right now Kevin O'Connell
34:57that call sheet for him isn't
34:59looking too big and trying to
35:01figure out.
35:02You know they want to get this
35:03defense off of them and get the
35:05ball down the field but they
35:07haven't been able to protect
35:08when they've tried that and
35:09you'd like to help the young
35:10quarterback out running the
35:11football but they've had no
35:12success on the ground there
35:14either.
35:16It's third down and two.
35:17Play clock inside of five.
35:21McCarthy slings his feeling.
35:23And the ball came out when
35:25Phelan hit the ground it's
35:26incomplete.
35:28And no argument from Phelan it's
35:29fourth down and the punt team
35:30will come on for the Vikings.
35:33It was there and Phelan
35:34couldn't secure it.
35:35Yeah it sure was and this is
35:38not typical of Adam Phelan but
35:41a big moment in the game but a
35:43you know good play in turn it
35:47loose with Tyreek Stevenson.
35:51So he's able to rip it out in
35:53what would have been their first
35:54third down conversion of the
35:55night.
35:56So they just had a hard time
35:57sustaining any type of drives
35:59and should have there.
36:01Line drive punt.
36:03Duvernay with a fair catch.
36:05Bears ball again as they lead by
36:07eleven.
36:09Saturday we have.
36:11SEC on ABC college football
36:14triple header at noon.
36:16Wisconsin against number 19
36:18Alabama at three thirty number
36:20six Georgia takes on number
36:21fifteen Tennessee.
36:23And at seven thirty Florida
36:24against number three LSU each
36:26game is also available on the
36:28all new ESPN app.
36:35Adam Phelan who is number three
36:37on the all time list for the
36:38Vikings in catches.
36:40And receiving touchdowns
36:42Matt at himself on the
36:43sidelines he could not hang on
36:45to the ball after the initial
36:46catch.
36:48Nice run here by Swift as he
36:50plows ahead and gets nine.
36:53Yeah that was a lot of DeAndre
36:55Swift there.
36:57And this offensive front.
37:00Getting a little movement.
37:01I mean contact right there but
37:06he just keeps on moving his
37:07legs and.
37:10DeAndre Swifts in a little bit of
37:12a proven year this year after.
37:15Having somewhat of a
37:16disappointing season last year
37:18when he's had good offensive
37:19lines he's been good.
37:21And last year he didn't and he
37:22wasn't so good.
37:24And this is a group that is
37:25expected to be a lot better
37:26and they have been tonight.
37:28DJ Moore was in the backfield
37:29he gets it now.
37:31Trying to make moves and with
37:33that last effort he's knocked
37:35down right at the marker.
37:39Under five to go in this third
37:41quarter and it is a first down
37:43for Chicago.
37:47These two head coaches
37:48approached preseason football
37:50differently.
37:52Ben Johnson played his starters
37:54played Caleb Williams.
37:56Kevin O'Connell did not really
37:58play J.J. McCarthy much at all
38:00and.
38:02I.
38:04I think that's showing up here in
38:05this game.
38:06Just twelve snaps for that first
38:07unit.
38:08In the first preseason game.
38:14Here's Swift on a toss.
38:16And I asked Kevin O'Connell
38:17about that.
38:18Here's a look at Caleb Williams
38:19and what he's been able to do as
38:21far as getting the ball out
38:22which has been preached to him
38:24ever since Ben Johnson became
38:25the head coach that they were
38:26not going to sit back there and
38:27take.
38:2968 sacks.
38:30Third most in NFL history again
38:31this year.
38:33And help out the offensive line
38:34and.
38:36He's done a good job of it.
38:37And as we've moved into this
38:38second half he's gotten more
38:39and more comfortable and you can
38:40see by the way he's carrying
38:42himself and the way he's throwing
38:43the ball.
38:45Ball's coming out quicker.
38:47As he is chased by Cashman.
38:50He wins that and out of bounds
38:51inside Vikings territory.
38:54Showing his speed in a carry of
38:55thirteen yards.
38:57Yeah.
38:58You know when you when you get the
38:59first part of it going with the
39:00timing and seeing the field and
39:03getting it to the right guys
39:04then when it's not there and you
39:05get pressure.
39:07You know there's just not a lot
39:08of.
39:10Players that can throw the ball
39:11from the pocket and still
39:13present that element like Caleb
39:16Williams.
39:18Cashman who was the one chasing
39:19him is down on a knee.
39:23Don't know if he's injured or
39:24tired.
39:26Well you hope he's just tired
39:27because.
39:29That's a guy who's.
39:32A key cog in this defense and
39:34missed some time last year along
39:35with Ivan Pace and.
39:36When Cashman's not on the field
39:39this is a different defense.
39:43And got Van Ginkle pace.
39:45Cashman and Grenard.
39:47It's about as good as it gets
39:49along that linebacker level.
39:51Here's Cashman chasing him to
39:52the sideline and still down on a
39:54knee.
39:55And as Troy said you have to hope
39:56he's OK.
39:59He pulled up a little bit.
40:01And.
40:02Trying to catch.
40:04Caleb Williams and you see it in
40:05training camp and in the
40:06especially in the early part of
40:07the year if you haven't been
40:08playing much in training camp
40:09and.
40:11Blake Cashman didn't take any
40:12snaps in preseason.
40:14Going back to your point Joe
40:15that.
40:17You do see a lot of these soft
40:18tissue injuries early on.
40:20Eric Wilson takes.
40:21Cashman's spot.
40:23Hand off to Swift.
40:24Stood up.
40:26Still fighting for maybe an extra
40:27yard he gets to.
40:28Cashman was trying to go into the
40:45tent but their center Ryan Kelly
40:48is already in there.
40:50So.
40:52This team last year Joe they they
40:54were one of the healthiest teams
40:56in the NFL.
40:58And.
40:59Obviously that goes a long way in
41:00the success then of your season.
41:03But they were banged up Harrison
41:05Smith the safety.
41:07He did not play tonight.
41:09And then you've got Kelly and now
41:11along with Blake Cashman in
41:12this one.
41:14Nice cut back by Swift.
41:16First down with a ball inside
41:18the thirty five.
41:23And a gain of twelve.
41:24That's a nice run by DeAndre
41:27Swift.
41:29You can see him start to the
41:30front side and then the cut back.
41:32Once it clogs up that's what
41:33you're looking for is that lane
41:34right through there.
41:36And he hits it.
41:37It's his longest run of the
41:38night.
41:43The back obviously that Ben
41:44Johnson's very familiar with.
41:46He got him with got the defense
41:55with snap count it looks like.
41:57That's Javon Hargrave.
42:00It was added with Jonathan Allen
42:02to beef up the defensive line.
42:05Neutral zone infraction number
42:0697 defense.
42:07Five year old penalty.
42:10We've seen him use his cadence a
42:15few times a night effectively.
42:18To draw off the defense.
42:22Meanwhile they had that extra
42:23offensive lineman Theo
42:24Benedett who's come in all night.
42:27In motion.
42:29Yeah.
42:30Big part of what they did in
42:31Detroit.
42:33They ran six offensive linemen
42:34more than any other team and
42:35it's carried over to Chicago.
42:37Here's Swift.
42:39Just runs right through Isaiah
42:41Rogers.
42:43That's that's.
42:44To me that's his best run of the
42:45night because he's been labeled
42:46as often the case.
42:48When you have the ability that
42:49Swift has then you're no longer
42:51a power runner.
42:52You can't be.
42:54And he's been hearing that long
42:55enough.
42:56And that's his.
42:57That's as good finishing a run
42:58as you can look at.
43:08They've been asking Swift to be a
43:10little more straight ahead
43:12running north on plays and he's
43:14shown some power in this game.
43:22Play action.
43:23Good protection.
43:25Flag on the play as Swift makes
43:27the catch.
43:34Flag is in the area where you
43:35expect to hold.
43:39Holding number 58 offense.
43:41Ten yard penalty.
43:42Free play.
43:43First out.
43:45Starting right tackle Darnell
43:46Wright.
43:48Talked about the interior of the
43:49offensive line for the Bears.
43:50Braxton Jones making his 41st
43:53career start at left tackle.
43:58But.
43:59There is a hold.
44:04On right.
44:05Yeah.
44:06Didn't look like much quite
44:07honestly to me.
44:08You got.
44:09Troy I agree with you.
44:10I don't see anything there that
44:11would justify a hold.
44:12Yeah.
44:13Redmond he just he kind of went
44:14to the ground just slipped more
44:15than anything.
44:16Manon guy in the backfield the
44:18rookie Williams over the middle
44:19and is.
44:23Out of the range of Cole commit.
44:25That was a fastball from Caleb
44:26Williams and it was high and a
44:27bit wide second and 20.
44:28Yeah.
44:29And he's missed a couple of these.
44:30You can see commit right here.
44:31He's going to come in.
44:32He wants to kind of settle it down
44:33because they're in zone and ball
44:34just gets away from Caleb Williams
44:35enough.
44:36You see how much.
44:37Area there was to complete that
44:38pass.
44:39Those are those are tough.
44:40You saw the expression on Caleb
44:41Williams his face.
44:42After the miss.
44:43Those are those are hard when you
44:44don't take some of the the layups
44:45that are gimme's.
44:48Sangin in the backfield.
44:50He's going to come in here.
44:51He's going to come in.
44:52He wants to kind of settle it
44:53down because they're in zone.
44:54And ball just gets away from
44:55Caleb Williams enough.
44:56You see how much.
44:57Area there was to complete that
44:58pass.
44:59And.
45:00Those are tough.
45:01You saw the expression on Caleb
45:02Williams his face.
45:03After the miss.
45:04Those are those are hard when
45:05you don't take some of the
45:06layups that are gimme's.
45:08Second and 20 big pressure.
45:13And the ball just comes out.
45:16And goes.
45:18Out of bounds.
45:19Let's see what the call is here.
45:20Pressure by Eric Wilson who
45:22took over for Blake Cashman.
45:23I think they ruled it
45:24incomplete at least that's what
45:25the umpire did or excuse me
45:27the referee and I think that's
45:28the right call.
45:29He was just trying to get it
45:30out and avoid the sack as he
45:31was losing his footing.
45:33Flag is down here is.
45:37He was not touched.
45:42It's essentially number 18
45:45offense.
45:46The quarterback was outside the
45:47pocket.
45:48However the pass did not cross
45:49the line of scrimmage and there
45:50were no receivers near the
45:51pass.
45:52Lost it down.
45:53Ten yard penalty.
45:54Third down.
45:55Well that's a big play with
45:56five seconds left.
45:57As that backs up Chicago 10 more.
46:01On what goes down as
46:02intentional grounding because
46:03the ball didn't get back to
46:04the line of scrimmage.
46:06Yeah.
46:07They've gotten in position to.
46:10Add to their lead and they've
46:11been going the wrong direction
46:12ever since.
46:13That knocked Chicago for the
46:14moment out of field goal range.
46:18They don't need all 30 yards but
46:20they need a chunk.
46:25Zaccheaus gets it.
46:28And gets that chunk of yardage as
46:30the third quarter comes to a
46:31close.
46:32It's a 12 yard game bears back in
46:35field goal range having fun
46:37tonight matched up against their
46:39divisional rival and leading at
46:4117 to six.
46:42You're watching NFL kickoff
46:44presented by YouTube TV.
46:54Well that was a big 12 yard
46:55completion before the end of the
46:56third quarter.
46:57Caleb Williams still frustrated
46:59but that gets Cairo Santos back
47:02into field goal range.
47:03He'll attempt a 50 yarder.
47:05And while this feels like a four
47:08plus score game even if they
47:10make this field goal it's a two
47:13score game if you want to put it
47:14in that category.
47:15Good call by Ben Johnson no one
47:17you're not going to likely pick
47:18up the first down.
47:19Let's get ourselves in field goal
47:20range and it was a design play
47:22to put them in a position here
47:24for this opportunity.
47:27Santos.
47:30Missed it.
47:32Has that just drifted wide to the
47:35right.
47:36And this remains an 11 point game.
47:39Those are tough.
47:40You get down here and an
47:41opportunity to come away with
47:42some points and extend the lead
47:43and then just not to take
47:44advantage of it.
47:46Continue to keep Minnesota in
47:47this ballgame.
47:48And now they're set up with
47:49really good field position.
47:51That's the end of the field
47:52where record hit from 59 yards
47:54in the first half to tie a soldier
47:57field record.
48:01J.J. McCarthy rubbing his hands
48:02together saying let's go to work.
48:03He's got to run for just 56
48:04yards.
48:14Mason.
48:15Right up the gut broke a tackle.
48:17He got through Noah Sewell and a nice
48:30strong run by Jordan Mason a game
48:32of seven.
48:33As we check in with Lisa.
48:35Yeah.
48:36Joe you can see center Ryan Kelly is
48:38back in the game.
48:39He had been in the medical tent.
48:41They were working on his right leg.
48:42They say he is good to go but
48:44linebacker Blake Cashman has been
48:46rolled out with a hamstring injury.
48:48So another hamstring.
48:53That has hit the Bears hard and now it
48:55hits Minnesota with Blake Cashman.
49:01Again with Mason able to break it.
49:04And rumbling down near the 35.
49:06That's the longest run of the night
49:08for the Vikings.
49:10Bayard brings him down but just like
49:12that the Vikings are moving the
49:15football again of 18.
49:17Josh Oliver gets just enough of the
49:19linebacker in order to give Mason a
49:21place to run with the football.
49:22He breaks that tackle then he's able
49:24to get past the safety fired and a
49:26really nice job with the field
49:28position that they had to start this
49:30drive.
49:31They have got to capitalize.
49:33Obviously they're already in field
49:35goal range but they've got to come
49:37away with a touchdown.
49:38They fake it to Mason McCarthy
49:41protected to the sideline.
49:43There's Jefferson able to get both
49:46feet down and he's got a first down.
49:48They finally connect for a nice
49:51shot downfield for 17 yards.
49:54Now good job on the outside by
49:56Justin Jefferson as they put him in
49:58motion.
50:00Tyreek Stevenson trying to keep up
50:02with them and just lay it out
50:05there which is what he's able to
50:06do for the easy completion.
50:13Second catch of the game for
50:14Jefferson.
50:15It didn't take long for them to
50:16get down here.
50:18Mason.
50:28Nice lane.
50:30And Jordan Mason with Adam feeling
50:34out in front of him blocking gets
50:35five.
50:36Well they they've kind of started
50:38leaning more on Jordan Mason and
50:40rightfully so against this defense
50:42of the Bears spent pretty tough
50:44sledding and get a bigger back
50:45back there and see if he can't
50:48move the pile and make something
50:49happen and Jordan Mason's been
50:50able to do that on this drive.
50:52fake toss looking for Naylor balls
51:06knocked down Dexter he's had a
51:09night sweat was there and Montez
51:13sweat is the one who got up and
51:16knocked it away as we say his
51:18name for the first time all
51:19evening and Montez sweat likely
51:21saved the touchdown because he's
51:23got an opportunity to the corner
51:24right here you're gonna see a
51:26receiver coming into the picture
51:27and.
