00:00I'm anxious because I just don't know.
00:04I've never had a good haircut any day ever of my life.
00:09Hi, I'm Janae, and today I'm getting a curly cut.
00:12But before you see my transformation, subscribe below.
00:17My mom is black and my dad is Italian,
00:19and they have two very different types of hair,
00:22and mine falls right in the middle of that.
00:25I've never really had just a good routine.
00:28As I got older, I was like in sports,
00:30so it was just like a ponytail all the time.
00:33In my 20s, I just wanted to look like a cartoon character,
00:35so it was like purple hair, pink hair, blonde, like all this.
00:39My current hair makes me feel a little incomplete.
00:42I recently got married and I have a new job,
00:44and I am like, I love this person that I'm becoming,
00:48but then I get to my hair and I'm like,
00:50oh, we need some work.
00:51So I just wanted to fit in with like the rest of this
00:54awesome, beautiful Janae that is coming to life right now.
01:02Hi, how are you?
01:03My name is Sabrina, and I specialize in curly haircuts
01:07at Allen & Salon in Los Angeles, California.
01:09I'm known for curly hair transformations.
01:12Curls love haircuts, so once you cut them,
01:15they will always bounce up.
01:16Basically, what we're gonna try to do today
01:18is enhance your curls.
01:19Okay, great.
01:20All right, let's just get started.
01:23First, I cut the perimeter of the hair,
01:26which is basically the length,
01:27and then I go in and create layers in the hair,
01:30and that will just give it the shape.
01:32We're going to be cutting a few inches off.
01:34That's really gonna help bounce up that curl,
01:37so I'm glad that she's willing to lose a few inches.
01:39It's taken a really long time for me
01:42to embrace my natural curls,
01:43because I've always wanted to have a different look,
01:47so now, I'm like, I want the hair that God gave me.
01:53We're gonna do a clarifying shampoo today
01:55just to get rid of any buildup
01:57and give her hair a nice, clean slate.
02:02The most important thing about curly hair
02:04is doing your research and finding someone
02:06that you can trust with your hair.
02:08I have extremely curly hair,
02:11and I just had a really hard time
02:12finding someone could do it,
02:15and so I learned how to do it myself.
02:17Once I started embracing my curly hair,
02:20I started helping others embrace their curly hair,
02:22and now, I love all my curly girls.
02:28After shampoo, I do a treatment
02:29for at least 15 to 20 minutes.
02:31I like to detangle all the hair
02:33and clip it up and put it under a cap.
02:38So after I rinse out all the treatment,
02:41I don't towel dry her hair.
02:42I like putting product in on soaking wet hair.
02:45I apply the volumizing product on the roots,
02:47and I kinda just let it work throughout the ends,
02:50but once I get to the crown of the head,
02:52I like to brush everything up
02:54just to give it as much volume as possible.
02:59After the volumizing product,
03:01I use a little bit of a curl cream.
03:03What that does, it just helps out with any of the frizz,
03:06and after the curl cream, I use gel,
03:09and the gel will just give the curls a little bit of hold
03:12so they last longer.
03:14When I diffuse, I like to keep Janae's head upside down,
03:19have the blow dryer on low heat,
03:21just so it doesn't really cause as much frizz,
03:24and just like we scrunched all the hair,
03:27we're gonna have her move her head forward,
03:29to the left, to the right, until it's fully dry.
03:32With curly hair, it's relatively a new thing
03:36that's being embraced.
03:37A lot of more women, and men,
03:39are feeling comfortable rocking their natural hair,
03:42and so I feel like, in a way,
03:44I'm kind of like helping them through the journey.
03:46Hair is the accessory that you never take off.
03:50You should take care of it,
03:51you should be happy with your hair,
03:53and you should treat it like a Chanel bag.
03:58After her hair is fully dry,
04:00I take a little bit of oil on my hands,
04:02and you'll notice that her hair is looking a little crunchy,
04:07which is okay,
04:08because what that is, it's the gel,
04:10and the gel has a cast on the hair,
04:12so what that oil does,
04:14is it's gonna break that cast,
04:15and make sure the curls are nice and fluffy.
04:19Are you ready to see your hair?
04:20I am.
04:21Oh my gosh, let's do it.
04:24Oh my god!
04:26Wow.
04:27This is amazing.
04:28Did you even know you had curls like this?
04:30I had no idea,
04:31this looks so...
04:31Your hair is really curly.
04:33...different.
04:41So once you're ready to go to sleep at night,
04:44what you're gonna do is put your hair into a pineapple.
04:46Wrap all your hair into a very loose ponytail.
04:50I actually think, like, your hair could get curlier.
04:53Honest to god,
04:54you're like two different people.
04:55I know.
04:56And it's only gonna get better from here.
04:58I always tell people that, and it's very true.
05:01This haircut has boosted my confidence a bunch.
05:05It was exactly what I wanted to fit into this new person that I am turning into, and I love
05:11it.
05:11I feel like it's me.
05:13It's full, and it's bouncy, and it's curly.
05:15Sabrina told me that every three or four months, I should be cutting my ends to keep it healthy,
05:20so that's what I'm gonna do.
05:21Working with Janae today was really wonderful.
05:23I was just kind of curious to what her hair could do, because you just never know sometimes.
05:28Once you have the right shape, the curls just kind of sit, and they will always bounce up.
05:32I'm not gonna put my hair in a bun for an entire week.
05:36Maybe one day, if I'm feeling lazy, it might go up, but that's it. Just one.
05:41Thank you for watching Refinery29.
