00:00to talk about the bill side of things we head out to the wise heart right we make it right
00:03call
00:03kyle wright hotline you know him as a all pro wide receiver and special teamer there for the
00:09buffalo bills once upon a time now uh he's the co-host of one bills live on wgr 550 in
00:15buffalo
00:15steve tasker joins us now steve welcome to the show thanks for having me on guys appreciate it
00:20well it's great to have you here i guess we're just going to start what i think is uh
00:25the obvious point here what's it like to have a josh allen on your team because i really want
00:30one of those we were laughing the other day i mean we lived in you know quarterback purgatory for a
00:36long long time right and you know if you don't have that guy your whole organization your fan
00:42base is obsessed with finding him as you guys well know right so uh we're standing around talking the
00:48other day we're watching practice and josh makes you know a throw you know it's 45 yards
00:54uh it never gets above eight feet off the ground it's spinning like it's like it's mechanic
01:02mechanized and it goes right into guy in stride and nobody bats an eye um you know that's how fast
01:10you get spoiled um the guy's an all-timer he's um he's a hall of fame caliber player he's in
01:17the running
01:17for the hall for the mvp every single year he is the biggest baddest dude maybe to
01:24ever lace it up at that position certainly he's as fast as anybody who's did that who's been that
01:30big to lace it up at that position he's smart he is beloved by his teammates he's that kind of
01:39guy
01:39just a sweetheart of a guy um he's an all-timer an absolute all-timer and yeah you do you
01:49get to the
01:49point where it's you can't believe how good he is and you can't believe he's on your team
01:53and then the next thing you do is you go to the calendar you think how many years do we
01:58actually
01:58have him you know and that's where the bills fans are now he turned 30 this off season um and
02:06you just you just lap up every time you see him play you just can't get enough of him
02:11yeah and i like josh i need to i need to put this in the front of it but uh
02:15well i mean at some point
02:16his playoff history has to come back to bite him in some way right steve i mean you just you
02:20put a
02:20lot on that and i i agree with you i think he's great as well but he'll be the first
02:24one to tell
02:24you that denver game last year that was five turnovers uh that that one falls on him the idea
02:29that he hasn't made it to a super bowl yet like i he doesn't and he doesn't nearly he doesn't
02:33take
02:33nearly the criticism i feel like for that that maybe let's say lamar jackson does yeah he the that
02:38denver game was even with the denver game and the four or five turnovers um you take his career
02:46playoff numbers and they're elite especially in playoffs um even with that game he had in denver
02:53and i think one of the reasons that game in denver happens is because he knew in his heart and
02:58i think
02:58a lot of bills fans knew it too he's going to have to do it himself he was getting zero
03:02help from a
03:02defense that was 21st in sacks 29th and run defense 24th in a third down defense i mean he's just
03:11got no
03:12hell and they just they couldn't get off the field um he knew he was going to have to do
03:17something
03:17special and he turned it over four times still scored 31 points and couldn't win the game um
03:23there have been four franchises in nfl history who have gone to the playoffs at least six years in a
03:30row and won a playoff game in all six of those years only four teams have done that the other
03:36three
03:36teams had three world championships in that stretch the bills didn't even make a super bowl in that
03:42stretch that's why they needed to make a head coaching change um you go back over the course
03:48of all of those games and while each loss in the playoffs was a little bit different they were also
03:55all very eerily similar and not too many of them you could hang on josh you couldn't hang too many
04:03of
04:03them on or if any of them on the talent level of the entire team something was wrong inside that
04:10stadium because they were inside that team because they kept banging their head on that same ceiling
04:14um so they decided to make the head coaching change and we will see if they changed enough
04:20if they changed too much or if they changed the right amount and it's a very high expectation floor
04:28this season for this team if you don't get let's think let's think about if you don't get the
04:31afc championship game this year what are you doing you know and that's an incredibly high
04:37expectation steve what's the biggest difference so far that you can tell from sean mcdermott going to
04:44joe brady well um mostly it at this point it's about the players they sign and the type of type
04:52of team
04:52they're putting together um they seem committed to putting young guys on the field sean mcdermott
04:59didn't do that at least not willingly he would bring a guy a veteran player in off the street
05:04and plug them in uh and keep the young guys off the field almost to a fault well maybe to
05:12a fault
05:13um joe brady and jim leonard his defensive coordinator don't seem hesitant at all to give
05:20rookies and draft picks reps with the ones um it looks like this defense in particular is going to be
05:26riddled with younger players in the bills who fielded in years past that's really the one thing
05:31that is different they also uh seem to be willing to sign guys with a little bit of grit that
05:39they
05:39didn't sign before certainly the culture was important under sean mcdermott he trained he was
05:44transformative for the franchise no question about it but they had reached their ceiling and part of the
05:49reasons the ceiling was there was that they seemed a little soft at times and joe brady has signed
05:56some guys and and his messaging to the team and with jim leonard in the building it seems it's going
06:01to be something a message is going to be a little bit more aggressive than it has been in the
06:05past
06:06those at this point that's about all you can glean from the differences between the two head coaches
06:11and as the season progresses we'll see if there are more yeah um all right before we get to uh
06:16your
06:16thoughts on some of the brown stuff with quarterbacks and everything i do i do want to ask
06:19you uh what you think about our wide receivers in particular concepcion and boston two new rookies
06:24that we're all really high on and what we've seen so far in camp well we i was talking to
06:28my co-host
06:29chris brown who's the voice of the bills on radio on game day we're you know we nobody talks about
06:34bills more than he and i uh we're on the radio every day talking about them and both of us
06:38we're sitting
06:38there looking at each other and casey concepcion and denzel boston along with jerry judy i mean come
06:46on those guys can go uh we love what we saw from those guys yesterday they were really really
06:53playing well against the bills defense and the bills have got some good corners max max harrison
06:58first round draft pick um christian benford who is a really good player big tall rangy corner um
07:06davison igbenosen's first round draft pick this year uh all three of those guys in all the corners
07:12that you know those guys concepcion and boston were having a day against them as well as judy so
07:18uh tylon wallace was good or like isaiah bond all of those guys were playing really well i'll
07:24brownie and i both thought you're chris brown that is chris brown and i both thought your wide
07:30receiver room was really going to help your quarterback who whichever guy it may be
07:35i think he's going to have some options when he drops back all right steve i guess that brings us
07:41to
07:41the quarterbacks what'd you think about deshaun and chador i think there's a question as to whether
07:48deshaun can get back to where he was you know four years ago i mean that's the question right no
07:52and
07:52i don't think there's any doubt that he's got some rust he's got to shake off 22 months between games
07:57is a long time um and carrying around the baggies that he carries around has got to add some problems
08:04to
08:04it being on being with cleveland in the building for as long as he has helps him and you would
08:12think
08:12that he's going to start to feel like him all his old self the more reps he gets the problem
08:18is
08:19is shadour he's not going away um i think when he came in todd mung and said listen just deshaun
08:27watson's done this he's a he's a veteran he's been around the block more than you can count i mean
08:32you're you know deshaun's in his 10th year um he he's he's got some laps on him he's going to
08:40be
08:40able to get back to this but the minute you put it into a competition uh and give shadour some
08:46reps
08:47shadour exceeds expectations um certainly getting him in the fifth round says some things about those
08:54expectations but man oh man the guy won't go away right he's not laying down in this competition
09:00so now you keep pushing the deadline of the decision back further and further and whichever
09:06guy it is has lost half the reps up to the point where you push the decision back you know
09:11i i think
09:12after this preseason game i think todd munka will make a call say he's going to be the guy and
09:17start
09:18giving him the bulk of the reps because i i think the more reps either one of them gets you're
09:23going
09:23to see a marked difference in their performance because you know just because the practice makes
09:29perfect so i think the quicker todd munka makes his decision the better but i i gotta say
09:37i see why he had there's doubt both those guys make some throws deshaun made a throw
09:42on yesterday in practice down the middle that was money it was really good and and shadour and i know
09:50that cj gardner johnson the the safety the bill sign he wasn't even practicing he was chirping
09:55at shadour about being a check down guy hey man completions are completions and i i am all about
10:04a guy who can keep his team on the field so yeah i think the browns have a problem um
10:10should do is
10:12not going away he's never going to fall down and unless deshaun gets back to being the way he was
10:18four years ago that asked that question is not going to get answered um i don't think either one
10:25of the guys i mean deshaun certainly hasn't just like gone out and just flexed and said yeah this
10:30is my shot you know it was this should it could have been over a week ago or two weeks
10:34ago but it's
10:35not uh and i think it's mostly on deshaun rather than shadour all right let me ask what would you
10:42make
10:42of uh todd munkin and he's obviously in his first season and these practices they're looking a little
10:47different than what we're used to with kevin stefanski most old school football guys and you're
10:51an old school football guy i hope you don't mind me saying that they seem to love munkin do you
10:54love
10:54munkin uh yeah i mean here's the thing i i i don't know todd very well at all i don't
11:01know if i've
11:01ever even actually met him but i was observing his team and i was observing the bills as well and
11:06and i know this sounds a little bit you know i'm in the weeds when i'm talking about this but
11:11let
11:12me tell you something what it takes to get a joint practice together two first year head coaches and
11:18i'll say this i watched that practice from start to finish yesterday and those two teams they had it
11:25going on man that whistle would blow man it was snap too they had that thing that thing was wired
11:31if those got those two teams practiced yesterday after not having seen each other they practiced like
11:37they'd been practicing against each other for like six weeks it was money i mean they were crisp
11:43the the changeovers were great they the fields were delineated man they were on it uh they didn't waste
11:50any time at all on that field and i gotta tell you the organizations both the browns and the bills
11:56to
11:56pull it off the way they did in preparation for this game tomorrow i gotta say i was impressed with
12:02the logistics and the way that browns handled themselves the way the bills came in handled themselves
12:07both those teams look crisp as a potato chip i gotta tell you i was really impressed with both squads
12:14um i think the bills had a little more energy yesterday but i think that was because
12:21todd had his guys practice yesterday the bills didn't or i mean the day before two days ago the bills
12:28didn't practice they had a day off the browns had a full practice on wednesday and it showed on thursday
12:36but the bills showed up a little fresher and that was basically the only difference those two teams
12:41were on it yesterday so i think munkin has his guys sharp they're efficient he's got some good players
12:50he can lean on jared verse is going to be of i think a pleasant surprise for browns fans
12:55um and this wide receiving core man i i can't wait to watch them i think they're going to be
13:00a lot of fun too
13:01so yeah todd monk and i think in the way they're handling their roster and the way he handles
13:05practice and his team putting together the way they are i think you got to be optimistic about
13:12where this thing's headed steve uh we really appreciate your time today uh obviously if you're
13:18still in town we hope you're enjoying the fruits of cleveland and we appreciate your time sir
