00:00The thing that I enjoy most about this team, the thing I'm looking most forward to, is
00:05all the young talent.
00:06So if you're competitive, even if that just means seven wins, but you have a chance to
00:11win a couple more games after that, and you just don't because you're young and because
00:15you still have a problem at quarterback there, that's like the best of both worlds.
00:20Young players balling out, competitive football, and still staying in the range to trade up
00:25to get your quarterback.
00:26That, to me, is the best case scenario for this season.
00:29So tomorrow, the fact that it's going to be a lot of young players, I'm thumbs up.
00:33But a lot of the young talent we're trying to keep an eye on and are hoping for the either
00:36rookie, hey, this is awesome, or second-year jump aren't going to be playing in this game.
00:40Yep, that is true.
00:41I would imagine no Concepcion.
00:43I would imagine no Boston.
00:44I would imagine Judkins is still not going to play because he missed all the joint practice
00:48stuff.
00:48I would imagine Fannin's not going to play.
00:50Schwestinger, we know, is not going to play.
00:52You keep going up and down the list here.
00:54Dylan Sampson, Austin Barber, I'd like to see them play.
00:57So the depth piece is defensively.
00:59I want to see what Sampson can do, for sure.
01:01But you can understand why the intrigue has been zapped for me relative to when it was
01:05a quarterback competition last week, and it felt like we were actually playing for something.
01:08And you did get to see the ones out there.
01:10I am still excited to see Shador, even if I think it's going to take him pulling a rabbit
01:15out of a hat to change anything.
01:17And even then, I don't think he can change the quarterback position.
01:20I think you know me well enough to know I would watch Shador Sanders play Canadian Football
01:23League, okay?
01:24I just enjoy watching him, and I will at some point in life.
01:28I'm sure I will.
01:29But I just enjoy watching him play football.
01:30So I'll have fun doing that exercise of it all.
01:33I also, that might turn around, and this is also how I work, I might just get pissed while
01:37watching the game being like, oh, great.
01:39He just gets to only throw to Gage Larvinan again.
01:42His entire existence is around these offensive linemen that are backups and these wide receivers
01:46that are third and fourth string.
01:48And he just tries to make something out of basically nothing.
01:51That actually is the only part that I'm going to be a little eye-rolly about tomorrow,
01:56is if Shador has a good game.
01:59We should look at that as in spite of who he's playing with, not who he's playing against.
02:06And I think the latter is how people have just decided, I mean, so much so that they'll
02:12support Deshaun again.
02:13That they're just not in the Shador Sanders business because of, I don't know, Boog on
02:18Twitter being an absolute jackass.
02:20Boog's been, he's been, basically, he just kind of sucks now.
02:24Oh, yeah, we're out on that guy.

02:27But, you know, only the worst to him.
02:30That being said, but like, I look at this and I go, if Shador plays well tomorrow, we
02:36should look at that and go, oh, that backup offensive line isn't great.
02:40Oh, you aren't throwing to Denzel and KC.
02:43Instead of how I think people are going to say it on Monday, which is, well, of course
02:46he looked good.
02:46He was playing up against second and third teamers.
02:49I want to know, and I think we'll be able to tell this pretty early on.
02:52Last year, the Carolina preseason game, Shador Sanders balled out and he was awesome.
02:57And you could tell at that point, even though he didn't think he was really going for the
02:59starting job, I think he really believed he was playing for either to be the backup or
03:03some sort of, I got to show everyone what's going on.
03:06And then he got deflated once he realized that he was probably thrown to ball boys and didn't
03:10have as many opportunities and Stefanski had blocked him and it was what it was.
03:14And you saw the Rams preseason game and he was just, he was just bad in that preseason
03:18game.
03:18There's no other way to put it.
03:19I want to know if mentally, once he, and he knows, he knows where this race has gone.
03:23It's gone to Deshaun Watson.
03:25I want to see if last week, I feel like he felt like he was still in it and he
03:29tried his
03:29best.
03:29He tried to make plays.
03:30I want to know what his mentality is like in now understanding that he is, everything he does
03:35right now is going to be built towards week seven, week eight, week nine, week 10, not
03:39necessarily trying to impress Todd Munkin as much as he possibly can.
03:42So while we talk about the quarterback kerfuffle and a Shudor's chances tomorrow to do something,
03:48Nathan Zagura was on with the modern boys earlier today and talked about the state of the Browns
03:55quarterback battle.
03:56I certainly do not think it's over.
03:58And I spent a lot of time with Todd Munkin on Tuesday, you know, talking, doing our interview
04:02for the Todd Munkin show.
04:04You know, I got to spend time with him, not in terms of the interview as well.
04:07And no, this, this quarterback race is open.
04:09I think that he likes both of them.
04:11Now people would say, and I'm kind of of the opinion, if it's close, you know, go with
04:15Shudor.
04:16He's a fifth rounder.
04:17He's under contract.
04:18He's a young guy.
04:18You can see it, but I think that it is still up in the air.
04:21But at the same time, I think that there are certain things that Deshaun Watson is doing
04:26better than Shudor Sanders.
04:27And I think that that gives Todd Munkin some comfort.
04:30If that is the direction they go.
04:32And I alluded to some of it, the pre-snap checks, making sure you're getting into the right play.
04:36Those are things that we don't see.
04:38Those are things that a quarterback tracker doesn't tell you.
04:41I think Shudor Sanders has made huge strides.
04:43And I think that the Browns would be very comfortable rolling him out there week one against the
04:47Jacksonville Jaguars.
04:48I think that that certainly is still in play.
04:50And we'll just have to see how it plays out with these two.
04:53So I think, obviously, Nathan is an extension of the Browns.
04:56He does have his own thoughts.
04:57He's allowed to voice his own thoughts and has previously.
05:00I do think it's really interesting that while I can't find any media member that isn't employed
05:06by the Browns to say the quarterback competition is still going, anyone actually affiliated
05:12with the Browns, including their head coach, continues to insist that the quarterback battle
05:17is still going on.
05:18Yeah.
05:18I mean, we played the clip from Andrew just yesterday on Baskin and Phelps.
05:21Same thing.
05:21You know, Siciliano says this is still going on.
05:23Nathan says this is still going on.
05:25Are they trying to sell a fight?
05:27Are they just trying to?
05:29And again, if these guys are, they're actually talking to Todd Munkin daily.
05:32Nathan said that in the clip, like he, or not daily, but at least before the coaches
05:36show, is Todd Munkin trying to make sure that they know that this is still a quarterback
05:41competition.
05:42You can sell it whatever way you want.
05:43I'm of the belief that it's over.
05:45And there's not much that is going to change my mind off of that.
05:48I think the why the Browns continue to insist that the, that Shadorkin still win the
05:53job.
05:53I find that really interesting.
05:55And I think there's a few different reasons it could be.
05:58So this might also spark, maybe you having something on this too.
06:01Okay.
06:02I mean, I think, I think the simplest idea is you've got to keep this thing going up
06:08because Deshaun is still proving to you that he can stay healthy.
06:11And that if something happens in preseason game number three and he gets dinged up, that
06:17might be the thing that says, you know what?
06:19We actually are going to start Shadork because we can't trust this guy to stay healthy.
06:22I think that is one potential explanation for why they just haven't closed this thing
06:28when it felt like the thing was over on Monday.
06:30I mean, that makes sense.
06:31That makes a lot of sense.
06:32I'm of the belief that it's still going on because if you called it after week one and
06:36one preseason game where Deshaun Watson didn't really even look that good, I think a lot of
06:39people would just scream fraudulent.
06:40And I think they're trying to protect the idea that people want to scream fraudulent.
06:43Now, if I was going to argue against that, Nick, what I would say is, well, they continue
06:48to split reps.
06:49Isn't it really important that you make sure that your number one quarterback, if it is
06:54called and decided, gets as many reps as possible?
06:57It is.
06:57Yeah.
06:58No, it is.
06:59But the reps that Shadork is getting right now still benefit the team if they believe
07:02that Shadork will play at some point in the season.
07:03I think that's another potential opportunity here of you might be taking 10% effectiveness
07:10away from Deshaun for the first couple of weeks of the season.
07:12But if you think you've got a pretty short leash on Deshaun, well, Shadork's not going
07:19to be getting a lot of reps once you get into September.
07:22So you've got to try and make hay while you possibly can right now.
07:26And extending this thing in name only allows you to justify continuing to give Shadork every
07:32opportunity to continue to be as ready as possible for when they finally do go for him, whether
07:37that's in September, October, or November.
07:39It's a way of basically watering both plants, making sure that both players get some development,
07:45both players get a real opportunity and a real chance.
07:47And it does.
07:48It keeps both players invested.
07:49It keeps both players feeling like the team is buying in in a certain way.
07:53And it just kind of makes the most sense to me.
07:55So we've given you two takes there.
07:58And I don't think it's just one reason, by the way.
08:02So it could be both things.
08:03And I think there's something tied with the last thing that you said that is like the
08:08third thing, but it's kind of like of a 2B.
08:10I think there's also a chance that they don't want to hurt Shadork's confidence.
08:14They do want him to feel like he has made tremendous strides.
08:18Nathan himself said the tremendous stride Shadork has made.
08:23And they don't want to stall his confidence.
08:26And ergo, they don't want to stall his development.
08:28And if they feel like they're still kind of digging back ground from how Kevin Stefanski,
08:34I do really think hurt Shadork's confidence, whether he'll admit it or not, with the way
08:38he was handled last year.
08:40I can understand, continue to draw this out to the last possible second and giving him
08:44those reps, is in service of keeping this young man as confident as possible.
08:50Because once again, you do know you're going to have to play him at some point this year.
08:52Yeah, they know.
08:53They're not stupid.
08:53They know they're going to have to play him at some point.
08:55And so you want to make sure that he feels good and is ready to go when given that opportunity.
08:59It just makes a lot of sense to me.
09:00And this is all, I'm not blaming the Browns in any bit of this.
09:04I think they've handled this a fine way if this is the route that they wanted to go.
09:07But I do think the race has been over for a while now.
09:10We've had this ebb and flow where, you know, if you believed one thing at the beginning
09:16of the camp, people who agreed with you or disagreed with you made sure to let you know
09:22it when the opposite happened.
09:23Like, it's been so interesting that, again, like, I don't think Shadork should be the
09:29backup.
09:29I don't think Deshaun should ever see the light of day with the Cleveland Browns again.
09:32I think this is laughable.
09:34And quite frankly, it's insulting.
09:36I know that would not be Todd Munkin's thought process on this.
09:41I think it'd be so fascinating for the people who've said, Deshaun's starting because that's
09:45the best thing you can do to win.
09:48I wonder if they'll say the same things if all of a sudden a different quarterback than
09:52expected is named the starting quarterback.
09:54If, in fact, Nathan's correct and this thing really is coming down to the wire.
09:57Can Saturday's game change at all?
09:59Here's what I'm thinking.
10:00If Nathan says it's still coming down to the wire and it's still up in the air and then
10:04Andrew Siciliano yesterday says the same exact thing, how bad does it look for the Browns
10:09if on Saturday Shadork plays awesome, Deshaun enters the third quarter and stinks, and then
10:14on Monday or Sunday they name Deshaun Watson the starting quarterback?
10:19You did lose me at some point.
10:21I thought you were going Shadork there.
10:22Can you run your hypothetical by me one more time?
10:24Sure.
10:25All right.
10:26If in the past couple days we've had all these people that work for the Browns tell
10:29us this competition is still open, okay, and they're trying to give us the idea that it's
10:32still open and it's under that assumption, right?
10:34How bad does it look for the Browns if they're preaching this idea that the competition is
10:38still going and then on Saturday, tomorrow in the preseason game, Shadork looks awesome
10:42and then Deshaun comes in the third quarter, stinks up the joint, and then on either Sunday
10:47or Monday they come out and say, congratulations Deshaun Watson, you've won the starting job.
10:51I don't know, I mean, so for some people I think it's going to be an atrocious look for
10:56the Browns.
10:57The problem is, I think there's a lot of people on the Brown side that Deshaun Watson makes
11:02sense week one.
11:03The Browns, and I will give them credit for this, this is not a cynical response to it,
11:07it's not a Randy Quaid in Major League Two.
11:10But the decision would have already been made up is the point.
11:11No, it is, but I think people are so prepared for Deshaun to be the starter, going all the way
11:16back to JW appearing on countless programs this offseason and saying nice things about Deshaun
11:21and how he's looked and the fact he's healthy.
11:25There's just been so much that has been normalized with this that I think the only truly disruptive
11:30thing is if actually Shadork is the starter.
11:33No matter what the end result is, if the end result, sorry, no matter what the process is,
11:39if the end result is Deshaun is the starter week one, I think you're going to have a lot
11:43of people who've been eating that up out of the palm of the Browns' hands that will just
11:48accept it and they won't call out the process at all.
11:51I don't think the process matters to anyone because they just, they bought into Shadork
11:55or they bought into Deshaun six months ago and they've just never come off it.
11:59I just think, I think it's a disaster situation for them.

12:02I think it's one, I think it's a really awful situation.

12:07More people than not will just say it is what it is.
12:09Deshaun's the quarterback.
12:10Okay, fine.
12:11There'll be enough people though that say, well, hold on.
12:14And so Saturday didn't matter at all.
12:15If Shadork was awesome and then Deshaun stunk up the joint, Saturday didn't matter one lick.
12:20Why, why do, why do we drag this out?
12:21What was supposed to impact it?
12:23What was supposed to change it?
12:24And then on Sunday and Monday, you're saying Deshaun Watson's the starting quarterback.
12:27Why didn't you just do that last week?
12:29I think the only part of criticism that will, that could actually touch them this year is
12:35if Deshaun is the starter as expected, goes out, plays four to six weeks, looks unplayable
12:42and not, I'm not just talking about interceptions and losses.
12:44I'm talking about operational issues.
12:47And then at some point early in the season, you pivot to Shadork, you start winning.
12:52Shadork can, you know, grows each week the way he's, uh, you know, reportedly grown all
12:57off season.
12:58And then you end up like a seven win team because of the four to six games that Deshaun started.
13:03I think that's going to be one of every person who's normalized this on behalf of the Browns
13:07who've said, of course, it's going to be Deshaun.
13:09He's the most talented quarterback.
13:11Those people will conveniently forget their entire seven, eight month arc.
13:17They had about Deshaun the second that all of a sudden the results on the field look
13:23different.
13:23Oh, by the way, I heard, I heard a young guy, uh, John Calavito mentioned that, uh, same
13:28thing this morning, I get credit for mentioning that same thing this morning to Ken, uh, Ken
13:32and Anthony.
13:32And you know what was funny?
13:33Ken goes, Oh, John's been trying to get us this whole topic and been trying to do all
13:36this.
13:38I don't know.
13:38I thought I've heard you say it all week there, Nick.
13:40Um, are you saying is that young Calavito is Calavito, is he ripping off topics from
13:45you?
13:45Cruditing himself?
13:46Is he taking takes?
13:47I think he might be.
13:48I don't know, but it certainly sounds like at least Ken is of the belief that, uh, that

13:54Well, in fairness, I think that is something you could just do on the station.

14:06a take, they like it.
14:07And then they just claim like, Whoa, I really been thinking about it.
14:10Really been putting my brain power in.
14:12And no, I'm not talking about any of Dan Orlovsky's non-football takes.
14:16Those are, those are truly organic, pure American trash that he created organically.
14:21Maybe just two fleeting thoughts.
14:22I don't know.

16:07So there's what realistically, what can he do?
16:10And that is an unanswerable question, but I do think if you have, let's say it together,
16:17a clean operation and you make a couple of plays, I do think there will be a fair amount
16:23of people, especially if Deshaun struggles, as you have kind of pointed to, they will have
16:27a different feeling on Monday, no matter if the Browns are part of that group or not.
16:31I think the Browns are ready to announce it.
16:32I think they will announce it either Sunday or Monday.
16:34I think there's nothing Shador can do to win this job.
16:36I've made peace with that.
16:38I've settled with that.
16:39If he has a clean operation game and, uh, I guess the win on Monday is us coming in
16:44here and saying, well, it'll be nice when we see him play week five or week six, that'll
16:48be, it'll be nice when we see him play week seven, week eight, and we'll get to look forward
16:51to that.
