00:00I don't know that this qualifies as an update on Shador, but it might, given everything that has
00:07gone on. Yesterday, Todd Munkin was asked about Dylan Gabriel potentially getting backup reps
00:13and potentially usurping the backup position. He kind of said he's not there yet, which left open
00:20Pandora's box for everyone. We also talked about the Connor Orr trade idea, his dream trade for
00:26the Browns, which felt like a nightmare when he said Spencer Rattler to the Browns to replace
00:32Shador and be the break glass in case of emergency for Deshaun Watson. Well, Mary Kay Cabot was asked
00:38about Shador as a backup and Connor Orr's trade idea. Here's what she had to say. He's still the
00:44number two quarterback. And even though Dylan has been activated, Shador is still the number two
00:49and is still the next man up. So I know they're hoping that it doesn't get to that point because
00:54they want Deshaun to continue playing well and winning football games. But in the event that
00:59he doesn't, the next guy up would be Shador. So I don't see Spencer Rattler coming here.
01:04And at this point, I also don't see them trading either Shador or Dylan, but we must always remember
01:11that Andrew Barry at this time of year, he likes to wheel and deal and he will listen to offers.
01:16Of course, he's not shopping those guys, but he will listen. And if someone makes him an offer
01:20that he can't refuse, then he will be apt to make a deal. All right. Am I the only person
01:25that thinks if there is an odd man out at the deadline specifically, it's Dylan Gabriel?
01:32Clearly. Okay. I just want to make sure because it feels like people. No, that seems pretty clear,
01:36right? I just don't understand trading the guy that's been the backup this entire time. I also
01:41shouldn't say it seems pretty clear. It seems pretty clear to me and you. I don't think it seems
01:44pretty clear to everybody else. The people suggesting that Dylan Gabriel would all of a sudden be the
01:48backup quarterback. It's clearly not clear to them. Yeah. It's the Dylan Gabriel phenomenon
01:53that has happened since he, since his window opened is very interesting to me. And I, some
01:59of it's trolling out there. I think another part of it, he was a team player in that moment
02:03is the suggestion at least by, uh, by his agents. Uh, if you believe some of the things that like
02:08our buddy, Nick Padone has suggested, well, and I think some of it is, you know, Shador hiring
02:13the agent and all that. And I'd listen, if all four quarterbacks are here this off season,
02:18there might be a different odd man out, but I just, you know, even I, I really just struggled
02:24with a Connor or thing yesterday. Cause it's like nothing has happened so far as anyone can tell
02:29that should change anything. We should door status here. And I understand that teams are usually more
02:35comfortable with a guy that doesn't screw it up when he comes to the game, meaning he's not going to
02:40win you the game, but he'll go ahead and operate the offense a specific way. And he'll do things.
02:45He's a, he's a yes, sir. Kind of guy, right? That's not what I want out of my backup. If,
02:50if, if Deshaun were to get hurt or have to be benched at any point in the game, I want
02:54a guy
02:54that can go win a game because every game counts. You are at the playoffs. You want the Tyson
02:59Badgett experience where he's throwing into team meetings and forgetting that he's a backup.
03:02Well, no, no, here's the thing. I want Tyson Badgett to be Tyson Badgett. I want Dylan Gabriel
03:07to be Dylan Gabriel. He's a check down Charlie. That's fine.
03:09Cause you do get in trouble sometimes. And listen, I want your door to be your door.
03:12So we're lockstep there, but you do get in trouble sometimes with these backups when
03:15they think they're all of a sudden Patrick Mahomes. And that's not really what they're
03:19asked to do now with this defense. And this is maybe where this becomes a convo then.
03:23Cause with this defense, if you're, are you asking the backup quarterback to be anything
03:27more than just the guy that doesn't turn the ball over and puts the ball in playmakers
03:30hands? I think depending on the game. Yes. Because while this defense has been dominant
03:35at points, they've also had moments where they've let Tony Pollard look like Jim
03:39Brown in his prime. Well, so now that makes it seem like you have a little bit
03:42of a, and I do too, by the way, I don't disagree, but it sounds like you have a
03:45fractured relationship with the defense relative to a couple of weeks ago.
03:49I don't know that it's fractured, but I don't think there, there was something
03:53about last year's defense and it wasn't true by the way, but we just had such
03:57supreme confidence that they could do no wrong. This is a different defense and
04:02specific to the run game. They've allowed, they've allowed Braylon Allen to look
04:05like a hero and they've looked like Tony Pollard to look like a hero as well right
04:10now. And I don't want to trade Shador either. If I had to move on from one of the
04:14quarterbacks, I, I understand the potential upside of tail and green, but I think
04:19Cleveland fans are higher on tail and green than anyone else's, which is not by the
04:24way, uncommon. Oh, the Cleveland fans and Jeff Phelps guys, he was a six round
04:28pick. And the one caller that said he's Randall Cunningham. Yeah. By the way,
04:31Randall Cunningham. I'm talking to that guy. Randall was a second round pick and
04:36he was a second round pick because of the era of football. If Randall Cunningham
04:39came out of UNLV today, he'd be the number one pick in the NFL draft. So he
04:43was held back by the time and the era of it. Tail and green. If tail and green was
04:47as good as everybody thought he could be guys, he's six foot six. He runs a, what
04:52is a four or five 40 and it has an okay-ish arm. Those guys don't fall to the
04:59sixth round unless they're, they suck. Like I don't know how to say it. There's
05:04a football defect there somewhere, obviously, which is passing. Yeah. Kind
05:08of important in the quarterback spot, but like if I'm moving on from one of the
05:12four quarterbacks or if I'm risking losing one of the four quarterbacks, it
05:16is tail and green right now, because I think you're going to need Shador and
05:20Dylan Gabriel. But if, if for some reason, Dylan somehow leapfrog Shador, I
05:25would not be happy with that development either. Cause I don't need to see him in
05:28games. I, I need a quarterback that can maybe show up with respect to Dylan in a
05:34big way. If you need a backup quarterback to play this year, not going to shock
05:37people. I'd rather see Shador Sanders. Uh, if we're debating between Shador and
05:41Dylan and really talking about a backup quarterback here, I'd rather see him than
05:44Spencer Rettler or anybody else you're going to name. But if you got a text to your
05:49phone right now and it came through and said, Shador Sanders has been traded.
05:52Don't ask me for a team. Cause I don't have a team and don't ask me the
05:54compensation. Cause I don't have the compensation, but if you got that, if you
05:58got that to your phone right now, are you gobsmacked? Are you like, Oh my gosh, I
06:03don't believe it. I could, I could, I no world. Did I see this coming? Yes. And
06:07I would be, I'm not right now. I'm not right now. If I, if I see that trade
06:10come through in my notification, I'm sitting there saying, Oh wow. Okay.
06:15Didn't see it coming. Not expecting that to happen, but okay. Clearly Andrew Barry
06:18thought something was coming. I would be genuinely annoyed and pissed if it
06:22happened. I do not, seven games. It's been a fine seven games from, for Deshaun.
06:28I think you have a chance to, to obviously push that if he can stay healthy, to
06:33extend this conversation, I'm far greater than I thought you would. I thought he
06:37was going to be done after two games. I think he can, if he can stay healthy,
06:40there's no reason to believe he can't start the rest of the season right now.
06:45But given the uncertainty of the 2027 quarterback class, given the fact that I
06:49don't know the trade value that Shador or Dylan has that to me is worth it right
06:54now today, I have, there's no reason to move off of any of these quarterbacks
06:58until you have a clear path at a better long-term development option.
07:03Well, yeah. So that's where we, I mean, we agree in the idea that I don't know
07:05that there's a trade compensation you can come up with. That makes sense for the
07:08Browns to go ahead and get off of Shador that way. Now, maybe they think they
07:11have, and I, I'd be surprised by this. Maybe they think it's some sort of
07:15quarterback redundancy. If they start to believe that with this defense, with
07:19the play, with the skill position players, they have that Dylan would offer
07:23up the same exact thing that Shador does. Then maybe they look at it as a
07:25fourth or fifth round pick as a bonus, but I don't think they look at it that
07:28way. Yeah. And, and I think the other part of this is like, it would be, it
07:33would be basically anointing that we trust to Sean to stay healthy the rest of
07:37the way. And I just don't think it can do that as an organization. It's the same
07:40reason why anyone that brings up Mac Jones and trade discussions, I
07:44think is just wasting time and wasting energy. Brock Purdy shown he can be
07:47healthier and he can be more stable in the past couple, you know, we
07:52saw this little stretch, but he's still an injured quarterback and he's still
07:55you need insurance off that. And listen, I don't know for certain that if
07:58Shador came in, that he would deliver the way that I hoped he would. I don't
08:02know, but I would like to find out here because there is an element of if
08:07Shador or Dylan goes anywhere this season and plays and looks good. I'm going to
08:12be asking you, why did you give that guy away for a fifth round pick in the
08:15middle of the season? I think Andrew Barry's response would be something
08:18along the lines of, well, Deshaun Watson is our quarterback and he's the one
08:20playing football right now. And that's all I care about. And my rebuttal would
08:23be that, okay, that's maybe a one or two year thing. And even then, even if
08:27Deshaun stays healthy this year, I need options in case he doesn't stay
08:30healthy next year. And it's interesting because there is wiggle room here from
08:34the Shador camp where I think they would look at this and go, oh, Shador must have
08:38wanted out. I've given that wiggle room to Jerry Judy. If Jerry Judy goes to the
08:41team and this has been, cause his name's constantly in the, the, the hopper,
08:45right? Being Steelers week, we want volunteers, not hostages, Mike Tomlin.
08:49And I, I would understand, I would be mad if they traded Jerry. You, he has a real
08:54value to you. He is one injury away from being your one or two wide receiver. I
08:59wouldn't do it. Cause I don't think you can get value for him. That would move
09:02the needle, but I would at least understand it. If Jerry Judy and his camp had a
09:07conversation with Andrew Barry, and this was six months in the making, I would
09:10at least understand that if, if Shador's camp was pushing for a trade, my rebuttal
09:16to Andrew, my rebuttal, if I'm Andrew Barry is, uh, you're still in the prove
09:22yourself side of your NFL career. I'm not in the business of doing you favors at
09:26the expense of my team. Uh, Shador has not earned that right or sorry. Shador's
09:31camp has not earned that right in the way Jerry Judy has being a seven year
09:35veteran, being a guy who has had a thousand yard receiver, uh, experience in his
09:38career before. Yeah. I mean, it's just interesting. Historically, Andrew Barry
09:41has granted the wishes of people that don't want to be here anymore though.
09:44Would he do it for Shador? I'm not necessarily, I agree with the, the
09:47sentiment that Shador hasn't been in the league long enough. Doesn't have the
09:50pelts on the wall, so to speak, in order to get the same Joe Flacco
09:54treatment that he gave, uh, that Andrew Barry gave Joe, uh, what a couple of
09:57years ago. So, uh, Mary Kay says Shador's still the backup. Have the odds increased
10:01that Shador will be traded by the deadline? It doesn't help the idea that
10:05every NFL analyst keeps trying to trade him. Like Cam Newton's tried to trade
10:09him. I'm just at a spot, Nick, where I'm not shocked if it happens. I'm just, I'm
10:12not. If I get that notification on my phone, my reaction would be, Oh, Oh wow.
10:16He did it. Okay. But it wouldn't, it wouldn't be like, Oh my, I can't believe I
10:20never saw it coming. Blindsided by that's not going to be my reaction. I would
10:23accuse the Browns of not keeping the main thing, the main thing. And you know
10:28how I feel. You love to keep the main thing, the main thing. Keeping the main
10:31thing, the main thing.
