00:00What do you want? Man, I'll come by for that drink you offered, that's all.
00:03I wasn't really serious about that. Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're heading back to San
00:09Andreas and Los Santos to uncover any hidden loot Michael, Franklin, or Trevor might have left
00:14behind that could possibly reveal the secrets of their success in GTA 5. That's one way of looking
00:20at it. Yeah, do you have any other ways of looking at it? Because I am all out. Before we
00:25continue,
00:26be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:33Dev Days.
00:34Alright, everybody pays attention, no one gets hurt. Go! Open the door! It'll get worse than her!
00:40Buried in the original 2013 release files are internal bug logs that reveal the very first
00:46GTA 5 build was created on April 20th, 2009. That is more than four full years before the game
00:53actually launched. The date sits there like a time capsule, proof that the team was already deep
00:59in the weeds while the rest of us were still arguing about whether GTA 4's cover system was
01:03revolutionary, or just annoying, and a full year before John Marston set out in the American frontier.
01:09The bug logs remain silent witnesses to how long it took to make virtual Los Santos feel this
01:15unhinged, and they undercut any romantic notion that the final product arrived fully formed.
01:20Development dragged on long enough for the industry around it to change, yet the finished
01:24game still revels in the same chaotic humor that defined the series from the start.
01:33I know just how you feel.
01:36Half Decade Hand Crafting.
01:42Franklin!
01:43Hey, what's going down, huh?
01:44The Los Santos and Blaine County map was not just some procedural miracle. Roughly 40 environmental
01:50artists spent four to five years hand-placing every building, road, and tree after an initial
01:56nine to twelve month white box phase. Every corner was iterated on for playability, sightlines,
02:02and the specific brand of chaos the game wanted. An almost absurd amount of human hours went into
02:07making sure a virtual gas station felt exactly right to rob, and the map still holds up more than a
02:13decade later because a lot of people obsessed over it instead of trusting a computer to phone
02:18it in. Next time you get stuck on a weirdly specific curb, remember someone probably argued
02:23about that curb in a meeting. That level of manual attention shows in the way the world still feels
02:28deliberate rather than generated, even if other studios have since matched or exceeded the density
02:34with different methods.
02:35Hey bro, what's up?
02:37Oh, hey bro, you're late. Nine years f***ing late. You know, you're so late in fact that you have no
02:41right to call me, bro. Is that clear?
02:43Realistic Research.
02:45I was wondering when you'd show up.
02:46I was dead.
02:48Praise be. I guess you weren't very dead.
02:51In the years since release, Sam Hauser has detailed how the team spent a minimum of 100 days
02:57in Los Angeles on research trips, and the real number was almost certainly higher. They interviewed
03:02FBI agents, former mafia members, street gangsters, and even visited a remote prison.
03:08Hauser described the whole experience as eye-openingly depressing, which, yeah, that tracks.
03:14Most developers researched by watching crime movies and calling it a day, but this group sent people
03:19into the actual ecosystem of bad decisions and then came home to turn it into satire.
03:24Los Santos feels lived in because the people who built it had already seen the less cinematic
03:29version up close. The depressing part is that the real thing apparently needed fewer punchlines.
03:35The research did not invent the satire so much as gave it a sharper edge, grounding the absurdity
03:40in details that feel uncomfortably close to reality.
03:44Ah, you gotta quit that s***, man.
03:46Yeah, I know.
03:46I take speed mostly, and look at me.
03:48Boom! Best shape of my life.
03:50Three Protagonists Twist.
03:51So what we doing here?
03:52We're working, amigo.
03:54Taking a score.
03:56Yeah, I've done most of the planning, and I think we're gonna literally make out like
04:01bandits on this.
04:02Shortly after release, Dan Hauser explained that the three Protagonists' structure began
04:06as a pure narrative idea.
04:08The team liked how GTA 4's episodic content let characters cross over, and they started
04:13wondering what it would feel like to tell one big story from three different angles.
04:17Only later did the concept harden into the actual gameplay feature of switching between Michael,
04:22Franklin, and Trevor mid-mission.
04:24So, what began as a writing experiment accidentally became one of the game's defining mechanical
04:30tricks.
04:31The story development created a problem that the design development then had to solve,
04:35and somehow both sides won, while most gamers are lucky if the story and gameplay teams even
04:40agree on the protagonist's name.
04:42The switching mechanic ended up serving both the narrative ambition and the fantasy of controlling
04:46multiple criminals at once, even if the idea started with no guarantee it would work in
04:52practice.
04:52I know, it sounded crazy back then, huh?
04:55But hey, you and me, together again, with Lester and Franklin on board, we can do this thing,
05:01T. This ain't no dream no more.
05:05Missing Documentary
05:06Oh, hey, there you are.
05:10It was cracking.
05:12So, we all good?
05:13Hell yeah, we all good.
05:14We did.
05:15Throughout production, a separate documentary-style camera ran alongside the official performance
05:20capture work.
05:21It recorded both the serious sessions and the actors' off-the-clock antics, including whatever
05:26stupid challenges Ned Luke, Sean Fontano, and Steven Ogg got up to between takes.
05:31The footage has never been released, and the company has shown no interest in editing or
05:36sharing any of it.
05:38So, much to fan dismay, somewhere in a vault sits hours of three grown men goofing off while
05:43pretending to be violent criminals, and the studio has decided the world is not ready.
05:49The actors themselves have confirmed the camera was rolling the whole time, but the rest of
05:54us are left to imagine the outtakes and accept that certain treasures stay locked up.
05:58Whether the decision came down to image control, legal caution, or simple disinterest, the unreleased
06:03material remains one of the more tantalizing what-ifs surrounding the game's production.
06:08Oh, we got problems.
06:10Yeah, no shit.
06:13We're in it.

06:25UV Reveal.
06:26The physical map that came with the Collector's Edition is not only a piece of paper to hang
06:30on the wall, but a conspiracy theorist's dream.
06:33Stick it under a blacklight and hidden text, markings, and UFO-related clues suddenly appear
06:38that only furthered internet and fan speculations.
06:42A normal map would have been enough, but instead the collectible became a low-grade conspiracy
06:46prop that requires extra hardware to fully appreciate.
06:50It's the kind of thing fans have come to expect from the developer, where even the merchandise
06:54is gaslighting you.
06:55Most companies would have settled for a pretty poster of the city, but this one added secret
07:00alien nonsense that demands special lighting.
07:03The extra layer turns a standard collector's item into something closer to an ARG prop, rewarding
07:08the kind of player who already suspects the game is hiding more than it lets on.
07:13Censored swears.
07:14Damn!
07:16F, is that your auntie?
07:17Yeah, thank God I missed her crazy ass.
07:20She's spirit-walking this shit now, man.
07:22That's just her attempt to...
07:23Hey, hey, don't be talking shit about your auntie, man.
07:25She got it.
07:26Even in a game drowning in violence, crime, and casual moral collapse, the main actors were
07:32handed a limited number of f***s and told the C-word was essentially off-limits for American
07:36audiences.
07:37And they had to record cleaner alternate takes just in case someone got nervous.
07:42Sean Fontano and Gerald Slink Johnson were so enthusiastically foul-mouthed that around
07:4715,000 instances of the N-word were removed just from their sessions alone.
07:52A studio built on offensive content still had to run a swear word abacus in the recording
07:57booth like strict teachers.
07:59The final game is still spectacularly rude, which only makes the existence of those cleaner
08:04takes even funnier.
08:05And somewhere, there is a version of Franklin that sounds like he is actively trying not to
08:10disappoint his grandmother.
08:12Oh, f*** me.
08:13Ha ha ha!
08:15Ha ha ha!
08:15What's up, fool?
08:16What up, wit?
08:17Mocap Mutt.
08:18Beloved doggo Chop and his movements were motion captured from a real Wattweiler.
08:23And then, later, from a more cooperative dog when the first one apparently decided the job
08:27was beneath him.
08:28Look closely in certain cutscenes and you can still spot residual treat-eating animations
08:33even though the treat itself is no longer present in the scene.
08:37The dog was good enough at its job that the ghosts of snacks remain in the final animation
08:41data like digital crumbs.
08:43Most games would have keyframed a cartoon Mutt and moved on, but this production brought
08:47in actual dogs, negotiated their performance, and still ended up with leftover biscuit-eating
08:53residue.
08:53Chop is forever a good boy, even if the animation data is slightly haunted by the memory of Kibble.
08:59Cutting Room Content
09:01Easy.
09:02I'm not stressed out at all.
09:03Now go f*** yourself.
09:05Are you okay?
09:06Yes, I'm okay.
09:07Just f*** you.
09:08All of you.
09:09I'm on a run.
09:12Former producer John Riccio has said that many minigames that were completely finished except
09:16for final animation polish as well as entire iterated levels were simply thrown out because
09:21the animation team was already overloaded and could not bring everything up to the required
09:26quality bar.
09:27An unused script named Gadget Jetpack also existed at one point, which of course fueled
09:32years of fan speculation about a hidden jetpack that was never actually coming.
09:36Finished work still got cut if it could not be perfected, which is both impressive and
09:41mildly infuriating for anyone who likes extra content.
09:44Somewhere on a hard drive sits a bunch of perfectly functional distractions that were deemed
09:49not quite good enough for a game that lets you murder people with a fire extinguisher.
09:54You have come a long way today, Mikael.
09:58Yes, later you will cry like a baby.
10:00Right.
10:01Moving on up.
10:02Shoo, boy!
10:03I'm back from the desert and I don't want you around here.
10:05But it's half my house!
10:07Lots of change, boy.
10:09Shit!
10:09When Franklin first moves into the Vinewood Hills house, the place is mostly empty and full
10:14of cardboard boxes.
10:15However, stick around long enough and the boxes gradually disappear while more furniture
10:20slowly appears over time.
10:22The house literally settles in around him, just like a real world move.
10:26It's a tiny, almost domestic detail in a game famous for cartoon chaos, and it works because
10:31it feels strangely true to life.
10:33Even virtual criminals have to unpack eventually.
10:36Most players will never notice the change because they're too busy stealing cars or starting
10:40freeway riots.
10:41The ones who do notice get a small reward for treating the safe house like an actual home
10:46instead of a convenient weapon locker with a bed.
10:48The slow transition adds a layer of lived-in progression that most players will overlook
10:52in favor of louder systems.
10:56Another turd chop?
10:58I gotta school your ass.
11:00Authentic Armor.
11:01You wrote me into your crazy world of bullshit.
11:04If it was lies, new age shit, and arguments about how good life used to be, I could've stayed
11:09my ass in Los Santos.
11:11Hello, Franklin.
11:12What's up?
11:13Alright.
11:15Here's the shot.
11:16For the heavily armored Paleto Bay score sequence, the actors wore 25-pound sandbags
11:22on their ankles so their movement would actually reflect the real-world weight of the body armor.
11:27The team could've told them to act heavier and called it method enough, but instead they
11:31strapped actual weights to the performers and made them feel every step.
11:35The commitment is both admirable and slightly unhinged.
11:39Most motion capture sessions involve people in spandex waving sticks around a warehouse,
11:43but this one involved ankle sandbags and the acceptance that authenticity can require
11:48mild suffering.
11:49The final scene looks properly cumbersome because the actors were genuinely getting tired of carrying
11:54the extra weight.
11:55Method acting, GTA style, at least for a few exhausting takes.
11:59Here we go!
12:00Right here!
12:01Get on!
12:01Ah!
12:05Ah!
12:05Woo-ha-ha-ha!
12:07Jesco.
12:08GTA 5 is filled with random events, but only one features a tap-dancing hillbilly complete
12:14with original music and full voice acting.
12:16The character is inspired by real-life performer Jesco White, dancing outlaw made famous by documentaries.
12:23The map could've been filled with generic NPCs and still felt immersive enough, but still
12:28managed to feature a fully realized little musical moment starring a fictionalized version
12:32of a very specific real person.
12:34Deep-cut weirdness that only a few people would appreciate, let alone understand, and
12:39it makes the map feel denser and stranger than it has any right to be.
12:42Most games give you side content to pad the runtime, whereas this one gives you a tap-dancing
12:47folk character and trusts you to handle the tonal whiplash without explanation.
12:51Life Invader
12:53If you check in on Jimmy's activity at just the right moment, you can catch him browsing
12:57Nico Bellic's Life Invader profile, complete with Roman still sitting on the friends list.
13:03A nearly throwaway crossover reference to GTA 4 that the vast majority of players will
13:08never see.
13:09The detail does nothing important for the story or gameplay, it exists purely to reward
13:14the terminally nosy and the franchise loyalists.
13:17Little bridges between games have always been part of the series, but this one is especially
13:21dry in execution.
13:23Jimmy is scrolling social media like any other useless teenager, and the profile he happens
13:27to be looking at belongs to the previous game's protagonist.
13:30The continuity is subtle enough to feel accidental, even though it clearly is not, and only the
13:36most dedicated completionists are likely to catch it in the wild.
13:40Western Connections
13:41On Franklin's bookshelf in the Vinewood Hills house sits a book simply titled Red Dead.
13:46That's it.
13:47That is the entire joke.
13:49No further explanation, no glowing highlight, no pop-up, only a straightforward nod to Red
13:53Dead Redemption sitting in a GTA safehouse.
13:56The company has never been subtle about loving its own catalog, but this one is particularly
14:01blunt even by their own standards.
14:03Franklin, the young hustler trying to move up in the world, owns a copy of the cowboy game
14:08made by the same studio, and the writer is even credited as Jay Marston.
14:12The corporate equivalent of a director leaving a copy of their previous movie on a character's
14:17nightstand for the camera to catch.
14:19Most players will never look at the bookshelf long enough to notice, but the ones who do feel
14:23briefly clever for spotting the reference.
14:26Edinburgh Dog
14:34In one of the cemeteries, a dog will deliberately walk to a specific grave, sit down, and wag its
14:40tail.
14:41Plenty of players have interpreted the moment as a nod to Rockstar North's Edinburgh Roots.
14:46But whether or not that was the official intention, the detail has the right kind of melancholy
14:51weirdness for the series.
14:52A dog mourning at a grave in a game full of cartoon violence is already strange enough,
14:57but the possibility that it is also a hometown reference only makes the whole thing stranger.
15:02Little emotional landmines have always been scattered through otherwise ridiculous worlds
15:06in the series. This one just happens to have four legs, a sense of loyalty, and excellent timing.
15:19Cops and Crooks
15:20An early version of GTA Online was planned as a three-faction Cops and Crooks mode where players
15:26would pick the lost MC, the Vagos, or the police, complete with bosses and more structured roles.
15:32However, the final free-roam structure won out instead, and Rockstar has never looked back,
15:37and the abandoned concept feels like a completely different game that almost happened.
15:41Instead of the open-world chaos we eventually got, Online could have been a more rigid team-based
15:46experience with clearer sides and hierarchy. Sadly, however, the team looked at that idea,
15:51decided pure player-driven anarchy was more profitable and more fun, and moved on.
15:56The rest is microtransaction history. This one decision turned out to be the one that lets
16:01everyone be terrible in their own unique way, for better or worse. Funny heist.
16:07Now, we've looked very, very carefully at the plans. We considered something more complicated,
16:13but given the location, the weakness of staffing, and the exit points, we believe that a more simple
16:19plan will work best.
16:20A clown-themed heist made it far enough into development that clown outfits for Michael and
16:25Trevor still exist in the files, along with extensive dialogue. The plan involved dressing
16:29as clowns, performing party tricks, kidnapping Patricia Madrazo, and somehow incorporating a
16:35racehorse into the proceedings. Sadly, it was never finished, which remains a minor tragedy.
16:41The idea of Trevor in full clown makeup committing serious crimes is pure comic chaos the series was
16:46built for from the beginning. Plenty of ridiculous missions have shipped over the years, but the clown
16:51heist somehow remains one of the series' biggest what-if scenarios. Somewhere in the cutting room,
16:57a version of the game exists where the biggest score involves squeaky shoes, bad makeup, and a very
17:02confused horse. The discarded concept feels almost too on-brand to have been left behind.
17:07We are good. All right? Wow. You are one serious f***ing buzzkill.
17:19Real-time recollection. How have you been?
17:22Not good. Things been good. No, actually things ain't been good. Things been a far f***ing way from good.
17:30Who doesn't need a bit of therapy now and then, right? During Michael's psychiatric sessions,
17:34he will occasionally confess to random events the player just caused in the world. Run people over
17:39on the way to the appointment, and he may even bring it up unprompted. Sleep with a prostitute,
17:44and there's a decent chance he will add it to the growing list of things bothering him.
17:48The sessions are not fully scripted in the traditional sense. They react to your recent
17:52behavior like a very expensive, very judgmental mirror held up to your worst instincts. While most
17:58games would have given Michael a fixed set of therapy lines and called it character development,
18:02here the therapist's office was made aware of your latest crimes, and remains one of the funnier
18:07ways the game reminds you that someone is always watching, even in a supposedly private conversation.
18:13And remember, brother, we're all rowing together. Now, cross that ocean. Oh, by the way,
18:22your insurance ran out.
18:23Camera control.
18:24I'm just gonna, you know, try to play both sides, you know, until I can find a way out of
18:30this shit.
18:31All right, man, look, man, you help me. The way I see it, man, the least I can do is
18:36help you.
18:36Along with their obvious differences and archetypes, each protagonist in GTA V gets a distinct
18:42cutscene camera language that reinforces who they are. Michaels is more traditional and controlled,
18:48the visual equivalent of a man who still thinks he's the star of his own fading movie. Franklin and
18:53Trevor's lean into handheld cameraman movement, with Trevor's shots adding extra zoom effects for
18:58maximum visual instability. The difference is subtle until you start noticing it, and then it
19:04becomes impossible to ignore. Rockstar used the camera itself as a character tool. Michael wants
19:10composure and classic framing. Trevor wants the frame to feel like it is having a nervous breakdown
19:15in real time, while Franklin mostly just wants to get through the scene without anyone screaming.
19:19The technique stays invisible to most players and effective for anyone paying attention to how
19:24the image is framed.
19:26Then he kind of got a little angry, so I admit, I kind of got a little angry.
19:31Did you kill him?
19:33What kind of f***ing animal do you take me for? No, I didn't kill him.
19:37Fuck.
19:38But I did kidnap his wife!
19:40Oh, no!
19:41Swan Station
19:42Off the coast near Sandy Shores sits a mysterious underwater hatch that looks suspiciously like the
19:47one from the TV series Lost. Swim above it and you will hear coded tapping that translates
19:53into a bowling invitation of all things. Even across the country and at the bottom of the ocean,
19:58there is no escaping Roman's bowling invites. The whole setup is peak early 2010's alternate
20:04reality nonsense, and it is still sitting there on the ocean floor more than a decade later.
20:09Referencing a then-popular mystery show in the most literal way possible was not required,
20:14but the team did it anyway and committed to the bit.
20:17The hatch does not lead anywhere important or unlock a secret mission. It exists purely to make
20:22curious players feel briefly like they have uncovered a real conspiracy, when in reality,
20:27they have only stumbled onto a mystery from a long-forgotten TV series.
20:31Medical Malpractice
20:43If you accidentally, or completely on purpose, we don't judge, run over Michael's wife Amanda,
20:49the game notices and responds. Unique dialogue plays in the moment, and later an angry letter
20:55arrives that helpfully includes a hospital bill for the trouble. Most games would treat the hit-and-run
21:00as generic pedestrian carnage and move on, but this one turns it into a domestic incident
21:05complete with paperwork and lingering consequences. Amanda does not only despise Michael for the usual
21:11list of marital failures, she now has medical expenses and a legitimate grievance involving a
21:16car. The latter is a beautiful little middle finger from the game's many systems. You can ruin
21:21lives in this world without abandon, but someone is still going to invoice you for the damages,
21:26complete with itemized charges.
21:34Climactic Ending
21:35At a specific overlook at around 7 or 8 in the evening, players can trigger a recreation of the
21:41final scene from the film Thelma and Louise. Simply drive off the cliff at the right time of day and
21:46the
21:46game will play along with the cinematic reference. Completely optional, easy to miss, and deeply
21:51committed to the bit once you find it. Most players will never see it because they are too busy doing
21:56literally anything else the game offers, but the ones who do get to live out a classic movie ending
22:01inside a game that usually prefers punchlines to sincere poetry. A normal dramatic vista with a
22:06nice sunset would have been enough, but instead players are given a film studies easter egg on a
22:11mountainside for anyone reckless enough to go looking.
22:14Concrete Callback
22:22Far off the shores of Fort Zancudo and Paleto Bay, players can find a woman's body weighted down with
22:28concrete shoes in the water. Already intriguing, this discovery continues a dark running gag that
22:33has floated through earlier GTA games like a very grim inside joke the writers refuse to let die. Certain
22:40flavors of crime scene humor have always been recycled in the series and concrete shoes remains
22:45one of the favorites. The body is not tied to any major mission or side quest, it's simply there,
22:51waiting for someone to notice the franchise's ongoing commitment to old school mobster cliches.
22:57In a game full of loud and obvious satire, the running gag proves the ocean keeps the receipts
23:02even when the rest of the world moves on, and the joke lands harder if you've played the earlier games.
23:11Cultish Code
23:12What do you got? What do you got?
23:14Just a couple more lonely hitchhikers for you to...
23:19rehabilitate or whatever. You know, just give me the money, alright? I really don't give a shit.
23:23If you visit the in-game altruist cult website through the phone browser, you can find Morse
23:28Code hidden in the page that decodes into anti-industrial and cannibalistic messaging. The messages line up
23:35perfectly with the cult's existing lore and general vibe, but most players will never dig into the
23:39website at all beyond a quick glance. The ones who do will get confirmation that the mountain weirdos are exactly
23:45as unhinged as their behavior suggests.
23:48The cult was already unsettling as surface level scary hill people with bad manners,
23:53but this detail gives them a functional website with secret Morse code about eating people and rejecting modern society.
23:59Even the optional browser content in this game is fully committed to the bit, rewarding anyone patient enough to dig
24:05past the surface.
24:07You're the worst cult I've ever seen!
24:11The boomers are finished!
24:13James Bond Trevor
24:15I'm gonna scan this place for cameras when you're gone, peeper.
24:18Hey, when this thing is done, the girls are gonna be videoing me.
24:21Nah, ain't gonna happen.
24:23A single-player expansion was originally planned and would have starred Trevor as an undercover secret agent,
24:28sometimes referred to internally as James Bond Trevor.
24:31The project was roughly 50% complete, including actual motion capture work with Stephen Ogg before it was abandoned.
24:38Resources were shifted to Red Dead Redemption 2, and GTA Online's unexpected status as a massive cash printer
24:45made further single-player expansions much harder to justify.
24:48The idea of Trevor trying to do proper espionage is almost too perfect on paper.
24:54The same man who solves most problems by screaming, improvising, and making everything worse
24:59would have been handed gadgets and a thin cover story.
25:01The expansion never happened, which remains a shame,
25:04because the world deserved to see Trevor attempt subtlety and fail in the most spectacular ways imaginable.
25:10This carded concept still lingers as one of the more unfortunate near-misses in the series' history.
25:16We'll get you another score, Trevor.
