00:06energy facilities. Large steel and mesh structures are now appearing around fuel and oil storage
00:13tanks at strategic sites in the country. Satellite imagery and open source footage show the protective
00:19frameworks near Dubai International Airport and at locations in Abu Dhabi. Construction
00:25reportedly began around May and was largely completed by the middle to late part of August.
00:30The structures resemble giant cages covering tanks and in some cases entire sections of
00:36tank farms. The unusual defensive measure comes as the region faces continued threats from
00:42drones and missiles, and the UAE appears to be preparing its critical energy infrastructure
00:48for another wave of attacks. The structures are commonly described as cope cages. They
00:54consist of heavy steel frames covered with mesh and positioned above and around vulnerable
01:00fuel storage tanks. Their purpose is relatively simple. If an incoming drone reaches the facility,
01:06the cage can act as a physical barrier between the weapon and the tank. Instead of allowing
01:12the drone to hit the tank wall directly, the structure could force an impact or detonation
01:17before the warhead reaches the storage vessel. That extra distance could potentially reduce
01:23the destructive effect of an explosion. For energy facilities holding enormous quantities of
01:28flammable fuel, even a small reduction in damage could be critical. The protective structures are
01:35primarily aimed at one-way attack drones. These include systems similar to the Iranian-designed
01:41Shahhead-136, which had become a major threat across the Middle East and beyond. Such drones can be
01:48relatively inexpensive compared with the infrastructure they target. A single successful strike on a fuel
01:54tank can trigger fires, damage equipment, and disrupt operations. The cages offer a passive layer of
02:00protection without requiring an interceptor missile or sophisticated electronic system. They are relatively
02:06simple to build and can remain in place around the clock. But there is a major limitation. The structures are
02:13not intended to provide protection against powerful ballistic missiles or cruise missiles.
02:18The decision to reinforce the tank farms comes against the backdrop of repeated attacks and threats
02:24against UAE infrastructure. Earlier in the year, a drone strike reportedly hit a fuel tank at the Dubai
02:30Airport fuel farm. The incident caused a fire and temporary disruption, highlighting the vulnerability of
02:37energy storage facilities. Other strategically important locations, including infrastructure linked to the
02:43Porta Fugera and gas facilities, have also faced security concerns. For the UAE, protecting energy
02:50infrastructure is particularly important. The country is a major regional energy hub, with fuel storage and
02:57distribution facilities supporting both domestic and international operations. The concept behind the cages is not entirely new.
03:05Similar steel and mesh structures have appeared extensively across the Russia-Ukraine battlefield.
03:11They have been used to protect military vehicles, ammunition storage areas, and other sensitive
03:16infrastructure from drones. But the UAE appears to be adapting the concept on a much larger scale.
03:23Instead of protecting individual vehicles or isolated targets, some of the new structures appear to cover
03:29entire fuel storage areas. The objective is to create another defensive layer around infrastructure
03:35that cannot easily be moved or concealed. The UAE already operates sophisticated
03:41air defense systems capable of engaging incoming drones and missiles. But active air defense has its limits.
03:48Interceptors can be expensive, attacks can come in large numbers, and even advanced
03:53systems may not stop every incoming weapon. That is why physical protection can provide an additional
03:59line of defense. The new cages do not replace air defense systems. Instead, they add a passive
04:05barrier that could reduce the damage caused if a drone gets through. Their effectiveness will depend
04:11on several factors, including the size of the drone, the warheaded carries, and the direction and density
04:17of future attacks. The rapid appearance of these structures reveals how dramatically the threat environment
04:24around Gulf energy infrastructure has changed. Oil and fuel storage tanks are fixed, highly visible,
04:31and potentially devastating targets. Protecting them, therefore, requires multiple layers of defense.
04:37The UAE's new cages represent one of the simplest. They may not stop every attack, but they could make a
04:44direct hit more difficult and potentially limit the consequences of a successful strike. For a country at the center of
04:50the region's energy network, even that extra protection could prove crucial.
